📖 The Heiress Who Came Back from Death
The Dead Room
Chapter 368: The Dead Room
The cursor blinked after the word confirmation, and nobody in the room breathed as if breathing might become consent. Ethan kept both hands above the clean forensic keyboard, fingers spread, while Margaret's recorder caught the small tremor in his right thumb. On the Hong Kong feed, Pacific counsel was still in the lobby, smiling at the cameras as if Isabella had finally given him the defense headline he wanted.
"Mrs. Voss is authorizing Ethan Hunt to reactivate a Hunt emergency travel profile," he said loudly enough for the field lead's body camera to carry it. "No," Isabella said before Ethan touched a key. "Mrs. Voss is authorizing a supervised forensic response to a forged credential request. Say the difference on camera." The field lead repeated it. Pacific counsel's smile thinned, but did not leave.
Ethan did not look away from the green line. "If I answer wrong, it alerts the profile bridge. If I answer right, it may still ring him." "Who is him?" Okafor asked. "The person holding the other half of the token," Ethan said. "Zhang Wei, or whoever he trusted enough to carry it."
Margaret moved closer, not touching the keyboard, only angling her recorder toward Ethan's mouth. "State each action first." Ethan nodded once. "Action one: no password. No private Hunt channel. I am requesting the forensic mirror Richard's contractor opened, read-only, through Margaret's warrant terminal." "Approved," Okafor said.
Richard, pale at the end of the table, lifted his phone. "Independent contractor confirms mirror is live. Every packet copied outside Hunt systems."
Ethan pressed Enter.
The monitor changed from green to white. "Emergency profile dormant. Reactivation source: Ariston intermediary token. Secondary route: Pacific service subnet. Destination: Vienna hotel exchange, Room 806." Catherine made a sound she swallowed before it became a sob. "So they really did tie all three." "Ariston money, Pacific infrastructure, Hunt name," Isabella said. "That is not an accident." "It is a gift to every defense lawyer if we mishandle it," Okafor said.
On the Hong Kong feed, Pacific counsel seized the same sentence. "Exactly. If Mr. Hunt participates, Pacific reserves all objections to contaminated evidence."
Isabella turned toward the screen. "Counsel, you are watching a forged credential attempt from your client's service subnet. If you want to object, object while your client's building is ringing a dead room."
The field lead's mouth twitched, almost a smile. The lobby camera caught it. So did Pacific counsel.
Ethan's next line appeared before he typed again: "Room 806 awaits arrival credential." Vienna came in over the speaker. The hotel desk manager sounded young and frightened. "Courier is still at service entrance. He says the envelope must be handed to the registered guest only. He is asking whether Mr. Hunt has arrived through the staff lift."
"Can you see the courier's face?" Margaret asked. "Cap low. Scarf high. But he gave a phrase at the desk." Paper rustled. "He said, 'Blue lift before nineteen forty.'"
Hong Kong's field lead looked up sharply. "Our sealed lift just turned blue." The table went still again, this time for a worse reason. Two Room 806s, two blue lift signals, one forged Hunt profile holding them together. "He is testing both rooms at once," Ethan said. "Vienna asks for arrival. Hong Kong answers movement. If either side responds as Ethan Hunt, the credential becomes believable."
"Can the dead room answer without affirming you?" Isabella asked. Ethan's jaw worked. "Yes. We can return a challenge only the token-holder expects, not a personal confirmation. It makes the other end reveal what it thinks it owns." "Say it cleanly for the record," Okafor said.
"Action two," Ethan said. "I will send a non-authenticating challenge from the mirror. It does not reactivate the profile. It asks for route verification. If Zhang Wei's device or courier answers, we get path data. If a Pacific system answers, counsel can explain why his client's service subnet knows a Hunt emergency travel phrase."
Pacific counsel said something sharp off camera. The field lead did not lower her body cam.
"Approved," Okafor said.
Ethan typed with two fingers, slow enough for Margaret's camera to see each letter. "Verify route before arrival."
For three seconds, nothing happened. Then Vienna's desk manager gasped. "Courier received a message," she said. "He just looked at his phone."
On the dead-room monitor, a reply appeared:
"BLUE LIFT CONFIRMED. HAND TO E.H. PROXY. SECOND FLOOR SERVICE. DO NOT USE DESK."
Hong Kong's field lead was already moving. "Pacific counsel just turned toward the service corridor." "Do not chase him out of frame," Isabella said. "He is inside the lobby," the field lead said. "If he goes into the service corridor, we lose camera." "Then give him a reason to stop."
The field lead lifted her voice. "Counsel, remain in the recorded area. The warrant seal applies to service corridors now that your building has returned a route phrase."
He stopped with one hand on the corridor door. For the first time since the feed opened, his face forgot the cameras.
There was the reward, small but real: the man who had been performing confidence now had to choose between public obedience and private panic.
Margaret leaned over Ethan's shoulder. "Packet trace?" "One hop," Ethan said. "Hong Kong service subnet answered faster than Vienna. That means the live controller is closer to Suite 806 than to the courier." "Zhang Wei?" Catherine asked. "Maybe his device," Ethan said. "Maybe Chen Wei's line. Zhang prefers cutouts. Chen Wei is still mobile, and Pacific's lawyers have not accounted for her."
Okafor looked at Isabella. "If we name Chen Wei without source support, we hand them a suppression argument." "We do not name her," Isabella said. "We preserve the line and force the building to hold still."
Boston broke in. "Ariston pouch has a second exterior item. Not opening the suitcase. Photograph only." The agent held up a torn courier receipt under plastic. "Destination city printed as Vienna. Pickup code matches the first four characters of the Hong Kong subnet response." The dead room chimed again.
"Proxy delayed. Switch to C.W. mobile."
Catherine's hand flew to her mouth. Richard stood so fast his chair struck the wall. Isabella did not let herself move. Chen Wei's initials were not proof, not yet, but they were enough to keep the route alive without touching Olivia, without exposing the protected family flags, without letting Pacific argue that Isabella had invented a suspect out of grief.
"Margaret," Isabella said. "Freeze that line. Okafor, warrant addendum: forged Hunt credential, Pacific service response, Ariston courier receipt, C.W. mobile switch. No names beyond what the screen gave us." "And Ethan?" Okafor asked. Ethan's face had gone bloodless. "If I do not answer, they may burn the mobile." "If you answer as yourself, they own you," Isabella said.
He looked at her then, and the room fell away for half a second: not Hunt, not Voss, only two people standing where old families had left traps in their names.
"Then answer as the dead room," he said. Isabella nodded.
Ethan typed the challenge. The screen accepted it. In Hong Kong, the blue lift dropped from sealed floor to service two. In Vienna, the courier stepped away from the desk and turned toward the loading bay.
The next reply came from a new number, no country code attached.
"Zhang is moving. Tell 806 to clear the child ledger before Voss sees it."
