📖 The Heiress Who Came Back from Death
The ETH Drive
Chapter 367: The ETH Drive
Ethan did not touch the black drive. It lay on the Vienna stairwell feed inside a numbered evidence tent, white tape turned toward the camera, three letters making everyone in the Hague operations room look at him before they remembered not to. ETH. Not Hunt. Not Ariston. Not Pacific. His own name cut down to a field label, the way Fourth Generation used to mark people before they moved them.
"Do not plug it into anything," he said.
The Vienna officer froze with one hand already near the sealed sleeve. "We have not."
Hong Kong counsel was still shouting at the Suite 806 lift bank. Boston's Ariston lawyer was demanding that the suitcase pouch be resealed. On three screens, three legal fights tried to pull Isabella in different directions, but Ethan's face had gone the color of old paper.
Isabella stepped between him and the main table. "Margaret, isolate the Vienna drive physically. No network. No local preview."
"Already bagging it," Margaret said. "But Vienna wants to know whether Mr. Hunt is a conflict witness now."
Ethan gave a short laugh that had no humor in it. "I became one when he wrote my initials on evidence."
"No," Isabella said. "You became one when Zhang Wei decided your old access could move faster than his body."
That landed. Ethan looked at her then, not at the screen. The shame in his eyes was too quick for anyone else to name, but Isabella knew it. Hunt Capital had owned doors in half the networks they were now trying to seal. Ethan had spent years telling himself that watching the door was not the same as opening it.
Okafor broke the silence. "Vienna relay logs are preserved. First read says the scrubber tried to delete two outbound handoff pings before the blue lead was cut."
"Destinations?" Isabella asked.
"One to a hotel exchange across the Ringstrasse," Okafor said. "Room registry pending. One to Hong Kong, not Suite 806 itself. Service subnet under Pacific tenancy."
Hong Kong's field lead heard that through her earpiece. Her jaw tightened. "Pacific counsel just heard the word subnet. He is claiming we are expanding the seal beyond the warrant."
"We are not searching blind," Isabella said. "We are preserving a live route. Tell him the lift bank remains sealed because a Vienna relay ping touched Pacific-controlled infrastructure after Li Wei reacted to a contractor credential tied to Ariston evidence."
The field lead repeated it, clean and loud. Pacific counsel stopped shouting for half a second. Cameras caught the hesitation. That was the small win Isabella needed. Visible conduct again. Public enough to hold without burning Olivia, the family inquiry flags, or the source routes that had brought them here.
Catherine leaned over her own laptop. "Families tagged to Ariston and Pacific inquiries are spiking again. If Suite 806 leaks before we understand it, every parent with a Pacific adoption receipt is going to think we found their child in that room."
"Then we do not leak," Isabella said.
Boston's body camera lifted. The navy-coated agent had turned the Ariston suitcase without opening it, photographing only the exterior pouch. "We found one more item in the same pouch. Not the suitcase interior. Exterior only."
"Show us," Margaret said.
The agent held up a folded printout inside a clear sleeve. A hotel invoice, Vienna address, tomorrow's date, and the same room number: 806. Under guest name, the booking did not say Leonhard Weiss. It said E. Hunt, and the room went colder than the cameras.
Ethan's hand closed around the back of a chair. "That is not mine."
"We know," Isabella said.
"You do not know that," he snapped, and the force of it turned every face toward him. He swallowed, then lowered his voice. "I mean you know I did not book it. You do not know what credential he used. Hunt Capital kept dormant travel profiles for board emergency movement. My father used them. Sebastian used them. I had audit access."
"Could Zhang Wei use one now?" Okafor asked.
Ethan stared at the invoice. "If the profile was never killed, yes. If he has a token bridge from Ariston's trustee pouch and Pacific's subnet, he could make a hotel, airline, or telecom system believe I am the moving party."
Margaret's fingers were already moving. "That gives us warrant logic. Impersonation, evidence tampering, live flight facilitation."
"It gives him a hostage," Ethan said. "Not a legal one. A narrative one. He walks through my old name, and every secondary target lawyer says the Hunt son is still moving Fourth Generation assets."
Isabella turned to the Hong Kong screen. "Can Pacific see the lift camera?"
"Lobby camera, yes," the field lead said. "Suite hallway, no. Still sealed."
"Good. Keep counsel on the lobby camera. Make him watch us not violate the room."
Pacific counsel heard enough to sneer. "Mrs. Voss, if you intend to use Mr. Hunt as bait, I suggest you say that on record." Ethan went still, but Isabella looked straight into the Hong Kong feed. "On record: we will not use a person as bait. We will use a forged credential trail as evidence." It was a line, but it was also a choice. Ethan heard the difference. His shoulders dropped by a fraction.
Okafor pushed the relay-log printout toward her. "Vienna hotel exchange just answered. Room 806 is prepaid through an Ariston corporate travel intermediary. Check-in method: remote credential. Listed arrival: tonight, 19:40 local."
"That is in forty-three minutes," Margaret said.
"Zhang Wei wants the room opened by an Ethan credential," Ethan said. His voice had steadied, which frightened Isabella more than the snap had. "Not necessarily by me. By anything that says me."
Richard spoke from the far end of the table. "Can we kill the profile?"
"If we kill it too early, he knows we saw the route," Ethan said. "If we leave it alive, he may use it."
"Then narrow it," Isabella said. "Ethan, can you create a corridor where the profile appears alive but can only call home to us?"
Margaret's head lifted. "Controlled authentication sink?"
"A dead room with a bell on the door," Ethan said. He looked at Isabella, and this time the old shame had hardened into work. "Yes. But I have to touch Hunt infrastructure to do it."
Every legal risk in the room rose at once. Okafor's pen stopped. Catherine's hand went to her mouth. Hong Kong counsel, still listening from the lobby, smiled as if he had been handed a gift.
Isabella did not move. "No private access. No old passwords. No unsupervised Hunt channel. Margaret records. Okafor witnesses. Richard funds the independent forensic mirror. You tell us each step before you make it."
Ethan nodded once. "And if the system asks for my personal key?"
"You stop," Isabella said.
Vienna cut in before he could answer. "Hotel desk confirms a courier just approached the service entrance with an envelope for Room 806. No guest present." On the Hong Kong feed, the lift indicator above Suite 806 changed from dark to pale blue.
The field lead's voice sharpened. "Someone just called the sealed floor from inside Pacific's service subnet."
Ethan looked at Isabella. She looked back and made the only decision left. "Build the dead room."
His fingers hovered above the clean forensic keyboard. The first request hit the monitor before he typed: "Hunt emergency travel profile, Ethan Hunt, reactivate?" Below it, a second line appeared in green: "Room 806 awaits confirmation."
