Chapter 369: The Child Ledger The words child ledger made Catherine sit down as if somebody had cut the bones from her knees. Richard reached for her chair and missed the first time. On the dead-room screen, the new number waited without a country code, patient and ugly, while Hong Kong's blue lift kept descending through the service shaft toward a floor the warrant team had not yet opened. Vienna's courier had turned away from the hotel desk. Boston's Ariston pouch still lay under plastic. Three cities were moving, and the message had named Isabella before any one of them could decide which door to break. "Nobody answers that line as me," Isabella said. Ethan's hands were still above the keyboard. "If we do nothing, they clear it." "If we chase the word child without a route, Pacific calls it protected-source contamination," Okafor said. "Counsel is already waiting for that." On the Hong Kong feed, Pacific counsel had recovered enough color to point at the body camera. "This is exactly the prejudice we warned about. Your alleged line is unverified, anonymous, and tied to Mr. Hunt's participation." Isabella stepped toward the monitor until her reflection divided his face. "Counsel, your client's service corridor answered a forged Hunt credential faster than Vienna. If you want to preserve your objection, stop talking and preserve the corridor." The field lead repeated the order in Cantonese to the building manager. A second security guard appeared behind Pacific counsel with a ring of keys and a face that said he had just learned his building was evidence. Margaret did not look up from her warrant terminal. "We need a narrow ask. Not names. Not children. Route and preservation only." "Action three," Ethan said, voice scraped thin but steady. "Dead-room mirror requests ledger preservation proof. No identity confirmation. No Hunt profile. Challenge phrase only." Okafor glanced at Isabella. "If the reply mentions a location, I can attach it to the addendum." "Then make it ask for something a guilty operator would know," Isabella said. Ethan typed: "Confirm ledger shelf before clear." For four seconds the room was all machines. Then Hong Kong's field lead said, "Service two is open." The body camera showed a corridor painted a hospital green that had aged into gray. A rolling laundry cart sat against a fire door with one wheel chocked by a folded envelope. Pacific counsel saw the envelope at the same time the camera did. His hand twitched toward his phone. "Counsel," the field lead said, "hands visible." The reward was not dramatic. It was better than dramatic. Pacific counsel put both palms on the wall in front of his own cameras. The dead-room monitor replied from the number without a country code. "Not shelf. Locker C. Blue card only. Burn parent index first." Catherine made a wounded sound. Richard put a hand on her shoulder, but Isabella had already taken the words apart. "Parent index," she said. "Not the children first. The families." Margaret's fingers moved. "Warrant addendum: preservation of ledger, parent-index material, service-floor Locker C, blue card access. No source attribution beyond screen response and service-corridor item." "The envelope," Okafor said. Hong Kong's field lead crouched without touching it. "Clear plastic window. Blue access card inside. No printed name. One handwritten mark: eight-zero-six slash C." "Photograph, do not lift," Isabella said. "Ask the manager what Locker C is." The manager shook his head too quickly. "No tenant locker on service two. Only contractor cages. Cleaning, telecom, medical waste, records destruction." "Records destruction," Catherine whispered. Vienna cut in before anyone could answer. The hotel desk manager was breathing hard enough to distort the speaker. "Courier is at loading bay. He has not left. He is arguing with a man in a brown coat. Brown coat says Room 806 was changed to private registry, no front-desk trace." "Can you hear the name?" Margaret asked. "No name. He said, 'Zhang said Voss saw the wrong room.'" Ethan closed his eyes for one beat. "The true occupant is not the room. It is the registry behind it." Pacific counsel laughed once, sharp and false. "Now we are prosecuting metaphors?" Isabella turned back to the Hong Kong screen. "No. We are watching your building hide a records-destruction cage behind a suite number while Vienna's courier is told the hotel room was a decoy. That is not a metaphor. That is a route." Boston's agent lifted a second photograph under plastic. "Ariston receipt has microprint on the torn edge. Lab magnification just came in. Pickup code four characters matched Hong Kong. The back has a handwritten note: C ledger, family side first." Okafor's pen stopped. "That ties Ariston to the same ledger destruction instruction." "And it gives us the legal bridge without naming Olivia," Isabella said. "Pacific service card, Ariston receipt, anonymous live line. Three open sources." The dead-room number pulsed again. "C.W. delayed. Zhang taking south van. If blue card fails, send child page to Macau." Hong Kong's field lead stood. "There is a south loading exit. Two vans. One white, one gray. Both engines running." "Do not let either leave," Okafor said. The field lead's jaw tightened. "Local police are still arguing scope. They will hold people. They are not sure they can hold vehicles." Isabella heard the old trap in that sentence: a legal pause large enough for a criminal to drive through. "Then hold the building manager at the gate and ask him on camera whether he authorizes removal of possible child-identity records after notice of an ICC preservation order." The manager stared at the body camera. Sweat appeared along his hairline. "No," he said. "No removal authorized." "Say the vans cannot leave." "The vans cannot leave." The white van's brake lights went dark. The gray van lurched. "Gray van moving," the field lead said, already running. Her camera broke into jagged walls, concrete pillars, the sweep of a loading bay. Someone shouted in Cantonese. Tires squealed. A uniformed local officer stepped into frame, hesitated, then slammed both palms onto the van's hood as if his body could become the missing order. The van stopped six inches from him. For a moment the whole room exhaled at once, and then the rear door opened from inside. A woman in a Pacific maintenance jacket dropped a blue card onto the concrete and lifted both hands. She was not Zhang Wei. She was not Chen Wei. She was younger than Isabella expected, maybe twenty-five, with a disposable phone taped to the inside of her wrist. "Name," the field lead ordered. The woman looked past the camera toward the corridor, terrified of someone not yet visible. "I only carry cards." "Who sent you?" The disposable phone lit against her skin before she could answer. The field lead angled the camera close enough for Margaret's recorder to catch the message. "Tell Voss Zhang has the parent index. Children are already copied." Catherine covered her mouth with both hands. Richard said Isabella's name, but Isabella was watching the south exit. The van had stopped. The blue card was on the floor. The ledger had not been erased, not all of it, and that was the only mercy the hour had allowed. "Secure her phone," Isabella said. "Preserve the card. Open Locker C on camera with the manager and local police. Vienna keeps the courier alive and visible. Boston seals the Ariston note." Okafor was already dictating. "Emergency addendum for cross-border preservation and vehicle hold. Probable cause: service-card drop, records-destruction cage, Ariston ledger note, live Zhang message." Ethan looked at the dead-room screen. "He still has the parent index." "Then he still needs a buyer, a courier, or a place to trade it," Isabella said. Vienna's desk manager came back in, voice shaking. "Brown coat is leaving through loading. Courier says Zhang told him the Macau page opens at nineteen fifty." Margaret checked the clock. "Seven minutes." The blue card lay bright on Hong Kong concrete. The dead room waited for an answer it was not going to get. Isabella touched Elena's locket once, not for comfort, for command. "Find me every route from that south bay to a Macau ferry in seven minutes," she said. "And nobody lets Zhang decide which family disappears twice."
