Bianca's invitation arrived on black card stock, hand-delivered to Dante's penthouse less than an hour after the fake nurse's phone lit up with the De Luca Foundation payment. ENGAGEMENT DINNER. FAMILY ONLY. At the bottom, Bianca had written one extra line in silver ink. Come see where you belong. I wore black. Not mourning black. Not the soft black people chose when they wanted to disappear. This dress fit like a warning, bare at the shoulders and sharp at the waist. Noah was asleep upstairs with Rocco outside his door, his fever gone and his recovery packet locked beneath my hand. I had put the silver De Luca token in my clutch beside the V-marked tape. Dante watched me fasten one earring in the hall mirror. "You don't have to give her a room to hurt you." "She already booked the room." I met his eyes in the glass. "I'm just deciding where I stand in it." "Tell me what you need." "Do not save me unless I ask." His jaw tightened. Then he nodded. "All right." The De Luca private dining room glittered with candlelight and old money. Bianca had set the table for twenty, all gold-rimmed plates and white roses, her favorite kind of innocence. My place card waited at the far end beside a service door. GUEST. Rocco had offered to wait outside with two guards. I had left them downstairs. Walking into the De Luca room without Moretti men at my back was a gamble, but Bianca had invited witnesses because she thought I would fold in front of them. I intended to give them something else to remember. Bianca stood when I entered. Her white dress caught every light in the room. A diamond the size of a lie flashed on her left hand. "Elena." She smiled for the people watching. "How brave of you to come. I worried you might find tonight confusing." "I find people easier when they say what they mean." Her laugh invited the room to join it. A few did. Dante was at the head of the table, not touching the wine in front of him. He did not rise. He did not rush to my side. He kept the promise I had demanded. Bianca took my elbow as if we were friends and guided me toward the service-door chair. "Everyone, this is Elena Vale. She's been under a great deal of stress. Her son has been ill. Dante has been very generous." There it was: unwanted mother, charity case, inconvenience with a pulse. I looked at the gold card marked GUEST. Then I picked it up, walked past the chair Bianca had chosen, and laid it over the place setting directly across from her. "You're right about one thing," I said. "Your family has been generous." I set the silver token on top of the card. It clicked against the china. Small sound. Every person at the table heard it. The De Luca crest faced up. So did the words PEDIATRIC OUTREACH. Bianca's fingers went still around her champagne flute. An older woman beside her frowned. "That is our foundation program. It funds children's recovery rooms." "It also sent fifty thousand dollars to the personal phone account of a woman calling herself Nurse Palmer," I said. "She came into my son's home tonight in stolen scrubs and tried to photograph his medical instructions. She carried this." The room changed shape. At the far end, a man lowered his fork without taking a bite. His wife covered her mouth with both hands. Bianca recovered first. "She's upset. She's making a connection because she needs someone to blame." "Then tell them you don't know the woman." I held her gaze. "Tell them your foundation never sent money to her phone." Her mouth opened. Nothing came out. The older woman pushed back from the table. Her napkin slid to the floor. "Bianca, is this true?" "A transfer is not a crime," Bianca snapped, and the answer hit the room harder than any accusation could have. I did not smile. I did not have to. She had just admitted the money existed. "My child is not your alliance insurance," I said. "And I will not sit by a service door while you use a children's charity to get near him." Across the table, Dante stood. Not for me. Not yet. For the words Bianca had put in the air. Bianca caught his sleeve. "Dante, please. They don't understand. Tell them this is a misunderstanding. Tell them I'm your fiancée." I looked at him once. The choice was his. I would not make it clean for him. He looked at Bianca's hand, then at the token resting on her stolen seat. "Elena told you what happened to Noah," he said quietly. Bianca's face drained. "She has no proof." "She has enough for me." He took Bianca's left hand before she could pull it away. The diamond caught the candles one last time. Then Dante slid the engagement ring from her finger and placed it beside the De Luca token. "You are not my bride," he said.
