Chapter 20: The Ring Clause
Bianca's ring lay beside the De Luca token, two bright little weapons on a white plate.
No one at the table touched either one.
Bianca stood across from me with one hand curled against her chest, staring at the pale mark the ring had left behind. I had expected fury. Instead, her eyes moved from the token to the older donor, measuring which relative she could still turn against Elena.
My phone vibrated in my pocket. Rocco's message was one line.
NOAH SLEEPING. DOOR SECURE.
The tightness under my ribs loosened by one degree. My son was safe. The room was not.
"You have embarrassed two families," Luca De Luca said.
He had been quiet at the far end of the table, which made his voice land harder now. His silver hair and surgeon's hands gave strangers the wrong impression. Luca had built the De Luca Foundation's smiling face while other men did the damage behind it.
"No," Elena said before I could answer. "Bianca did that when she bought access to my child."
Luca turned his eyes on her. "A woman under stress should be careful with accusations. Especially when a custody judge will read every word."
The threat did not make Elena step back. It put color in her face.
Outside the glass wall, flashes began to burst against the rain. Bianca had invited more than family. Reporters crowded the entrance, camera lenses trained on the dining room.
Luca smiled at them. "By morning, they will know my niece was discarded because a desperate woman found herself useful to a Moretti."
Elena moved to the window. The service-door chair, the white roses, Bianca's empty hand—she took them all in as if she were measuring a battlefield.
Then she looked at me.
"Do you have the band?"
For a second, I could not breathe.
The plain platinum ring had lived in my inside pocket since the night she signed the ninety-day agreement, a lawyer's necessary prop for public appearances. I had never put it on her; every time I touched the box, I remembered the wedding ring I had once left waiting while I believed lies about her.
I had no right to use it now.
"Yes," I said.
"Then listen carefully." She crossed the room, stopping close enough that only I could hear her over the cameras. "We walk out the front. You say I am your wife under the agreement, not your woman. You say Noah stays with his mother. You say no one touches his care or his name without my consent. And you do not touch me unless I tell you to."
Elena gave Luca no glance. "He will repeat my terms where you can hear them."
That was the price. Not a kiss. Not forgiveness. A sentence I should have said five years ago when it mattered most.
By midnight, De Luca would pull every favor they had placed between their family and ours. I knew the cost of making them an enemy. Elena's son had already paid too much for me to choose their comfort again.
I took the small black box from my jacket and opened it in my palm.
"May I?" I asked.
Her eyes flicked to the ring, then to my face. "You may put it on. That is all."
She held out her left hand.
The band slid over her finger without a promise attached. My thumb shook once against her knuckle. I made myself let go.
We reached the front doors together. The room behind us erupted—Bianca calling my name, Luca ordering someone to stop us. One of Luca's men put his arm across the brass handles.
Elena faced him. "Move."
He did not.
I took his wrist, lifted it off the door, and opened it for her. Elena walked through first. I followed at her shoulder, not in front of her.
The doors opened. Rain hissed on the pavement as reporters surged forward, wet hair plastered to their faces. A dozen microphones rose.
"Mr. Moretti, did you end the engagement for your mistress?" someone shouted.
Elena's fingers tightened around her clutch. She held the cameras' gaze and waited.
"Elena Vale is my wife under a ninety-day agreement," I said, each word chosen for her, not for me. "She is not my property, and neither is our son. Noah stays with his mother. His care, his name, and every decision about his life require Elena's consent."
The cameras exploded in light.
Luca appeared in the doorway behind us, his expression carved from ice. "That agreement will not survive De Luca scrutiny."
Elena turned just enough for every camera to see her face.
"Good," she said. "Neither will your foundation."
I opened the car door and waited. I did not take her hand. Elena got in first.
Before I followed, she looked down at the platinum band and then at me.
"This does not make you my husband."
