📖 The Mafia Heir He Never Knew
Chapter 18: The Nurse Who Lied
Noah's hand was still stretched toward Dante when the elevator chimed.
I had gotten him cool water. The heat in his forehead had eased enough that he was looking at me instead of through me. He was tired, not crashing. I kept his bedroom door open and the black floor card in my pocket.
Before anyone could reach the floor, I took a cream folder from the desk, filled it with blank pages, and wrote one line across the first sheet: NOAH VALE'S MOTHER SEES EVERYTHING. I left it on the entry table where the mirrored wall could show me anyone who touched it.
A woman in pale-blue scrubs stepped out of the elevator with a leather bag and a cream folder tucked under her arm.
"Ms. Vale? I'm Nurse Palmer. Dr. Hall sent me to update Noah's overnight instructions."
No nurse had been invited. Dr. Hall had sent Noah home with one sealed packet, and it was under the pillow beside my son—not in this stranger's hands.
The folder she carried was my decoy.
"You can wait there," I said.
Palmer's eyes went past me to Noah's bedroom. "The surgeon asked for the full recovery details. The custody complaint may require them."
There it was. Not concern. A threat dressed in scrubs.
I bent over Noah. "Do you want Daddy to bring you another cold cloth?"
He nodded, small and sleepy.
I looked at Dante. Once. That was all the signal he got.
He took the basin and walked into the bathroom. Not toward the nurse. Not until I asked.
"The packet stays with me," I said. "If Dr. Hall needs anything, she calls me."
Palmer smiled too carefully. "Of course. I only need to verify the discharge note."
"Then you won't mind if I make tea first."
I walked to the kitchen island, close enough to see her in the mirrored wall but far enough to make the folder seem abandoned. I did not take my eyes off my reflection.
Palmer waited three seconds.
Then she lifted the cream folder, slipped a phone from her pocket, and angled its camera over the page inside.
The page was blank except for one line I had written in black marker: NOAH VALE'S MOTHER SEES EVERYTHING.
"Now," I said.
Dante came out of the bathroom so fast the cold cloth hit the floor. He caught Palmer's wrist before she could lower the phone. He did not squeeze. He only held her still while I crossed the marble.
"Let go of me," she snapped. The pleasant nurse voice was gone.
"Who told you Noah's packet was here?" I asked.
"I work for Dr. Hall."
"Dr. Hall doesn't send people who call a recovery note evidence for a custody complaint."
Palmer jerked against Dante's grip. Her leather bag tipped open. A small silver access token skittered across the floor.
I stepped on it before it could slide beneath the console. The De Luca crest flashed on one side.
On the other was a printed line: PEDIATRIC OUTREACH. Along its edge, a crooked V had been scratched into the silver—the same hard angle as the tape behind Noah's lock.
"That is not a hospital badge," I said.
Her face emptied.
V for Vittoria, or V for something else. Either way, the lock and this nurse had touched the same hand.
Dante looked at me, waiting. Not deciding. Waiting.
"Take the phone," I said. "No one leaves until Rocco gets here."
He took it from her open hand. The screen woke before Palmer could stop it.
A new notification filled the glass between us.
DE LUCA FOUNDATION — PEDIATRIC OUTREACH: $50,000 TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Palmer shut her eyes.
"Fifty thousand dollars for a photograph?" I said.
Noah shifted in bed. "Mom?"
I put the token in my pocket beside the V-marked tape and went to him first.
Behind me, the De Luca payment glowed in Dante's hand.
