📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 131: The Terms at the Front Gate
The courier did not come inside.
Alvarez made sure of that before Martha could turn the front gate into another door Olivia had somehow opened.
"Hold him at the outer stone," he said into the speaker. "No packet crosses until the room records the terms of delivery."
Martha laughed softly. "You are all very brave with tape on the floor. The city is not taped for you."
Isabella felt Ethan look at her and refused to look back too soon. If she took fear from his face before she took facts from the gate, Martha would use it.
"Exterior facts only," Isabella said. "Delivery category. Addressee label. Requesting venue category. Signature condition. Access consequence. Timing after the blocked service attempts. Nothing in the packet. No advice. No office content."
Olivia's hand tightened on the edge of the table. "And Leah Mercer's signature does not become my review."
"It was not sent to you," Martha said.
"Then you do not get to spend my refusal with her name," Olivia answered.
Isabella's fingers loosened from the edge of her sleeve. She had not known she was holding on that hard.
The guard at the gate came through the speaker, wind cutting at the edges of his voice. "Courier has a slate tray. Sealed envelope. No handoff yet."
Isabella crossed to the console, took the silver letter opener from its stand, and laid it flat on Alvarez's evidence cloth without touching the blade.
Martha's eyes flashed. "That is antique silver."
"Good," Isabella said. "Then everyone will notice it is not being used."
She pointed toward the phone. "Tell the guard to place the tray on the outer stone and step back. If there is a pen, it goes on the stone separately. If there is a device, it stays in the courier's hand and does not enter the gate camera line."
Ethan's jaw worked once. Alvarez looked at him.
"That is consistent," Ethan said. His voice had lost its usual polish. "A signature request is not a signature. Access terms are not access. No one should hand her a pen before the exterior condition is recorded."
Martha turned the word her into a knife. "Her. Which her, Mr. Hunt?"
She stepped toward the phone stand as she said it, one hand already reaching for the receiver, trying to make the gate hear the question before Isabella could answer it.
The room stilled.
Isabella looked at him then.
Ethan did not reach for her. He did not say her name. "The person named on the delivery label gets to set the boundary for that label. I do not."
The speaker clicked.
FRONT GATE DELIVERY FACTS ONLY:
Delivery category: engagement terms packet.
Addressee label: Leah Mercer.
Requesting venue category: external office access desk.
Signature condition: requested before access hold can clear.
Timing: after blocked west service access attempts.
The words did not open the envelope. They still changed the room.
Miss Vale made a tiny sound. "So when the door failed, she sent a desk."
Martha's smile came back too quickly. "A desk is where adults make decisions."
Isabella stepped to the yellow tape Alvarez had left near the west service line. She did not cross it. Instead, she lifted the end that was not stuck down and carried it two steps toward the front hall, making a bright, crooked path from the failed keys toward the phone.
"Then attach the desk to the attempt," she said. "The packet arrived after the side door failed. It stays outside until we know whether the signature is an access condition or another substitute consent."
Alvarez looked at Olivia.
Olivia nodded once. "Record it that way."
Martha's face hardened. "You are making a public spectacle of a private offer."
"No," Isabella said. "You are trying to make a private offer do public harm."
Outside, the guard spoke again. "Courier reports five-minute hold before the access desk marks delivery refused."
Ethan's control cracked at the edge: the quick drop of his eyes to Isabella's hands, the guilt he swallowed before it could become an answer.
"Who set the five minutes?" Isabella asked.
He closed his eyes for half a second, then opened them on Martha, not on her.
"Do not ask me to guess," he said. "Ask for the requesting side."
Olivia did not wait for Martha's smile.
"Requesting side only," she said. "No body, no advice, no contact path."
The wind hissed over the speaker.
"Exterior response available," the guard said. "Requesting side category is not Hunt desk."
Ethan went very still.
Martha's hand found the empty bell place again.
At the front gate, someone knocked once on the stone, patient as a creditor.
"Four minutes," the guard said. "Then the access desk marks delivery refused."
