The knock on the front-gate stone came again, patient and insulting. "Four minutes," the guard said over the speaker. "Courier says the access desk will mark delivery refused." Martha let the silence stretch until everyone heard Ethan not answering. "Not Hunt," she said. She turned toward Isabella with a sympathy that had teeth in it. "How awkward. The man who brought you here does not even know who is closing the door." Ethan's hand tightened at his side. He did not reach for the phone. Isabella moved first. She pressed the loose end of yellow tape to the marble, ending the crooked path beside the phone stand. Then she set the unused letter opener across it. "Alvarez," she said, "mark the front-gate packet as attached to the failed side-door chain. No signature before a refusal receipt. No pen inside. No device inside. No one answers for Leah Mercer by embarrassment." Martha's smile disappeared. Olivia stood so fast her chair struck the table leg. "And no one uses my prior refusal to make Leah look difficult. If the access desk wants a refusal, it gets a refusal of delivery conditions, not a refusal of review." At the gate, wind scraped the speaker. "Ask the courier to state only exterior access facts into the gate speaker," Isabella said. "Requesting-side category. Relation to the access desk. Refusal consequence. Timing after the blocked west service attempts. Whether that side can condition external office access without live review." Martha crossed to the phone stand before Alvarez could repeat the instruction. Her hem snapped against the yellow tape. She leaned close enough for the gate to hear command in her breath. "Tell the courier the household will not be humiliated by a girl playing lawyer," Martha said. Richard's head came up. Isabella looked at him once. He swallowed. "I will testify that Martha Thorne attempted to characterize the refusal before the courier facts were recorded." The words hurt him. That made them useful. Martha turned on him. "You would rather make a record against your mother than open a door for your family?" "Tonight," Richard said, voice rough, "the family keeps making doors out of other people's names." The courier spoke through the gate speaker, clipped and annoyed. EXTERIOR DELIVERY FACTS ONLY: Requesting-side category: venue-affiliated engagement intake. Access-desk relation: can request delivery acknowledgment before visitor access hold clears. Refusal consequence: delivery condition may be marked refused; access hold remains pending. Timing: after west service access attempts failed. Live review authority: not shown by delivery category alone. The room changed on the last line. Miss Vale pressed one hand to her mouth. The maid stopped crying and stared toward the invisible gate. Isabella let the fact block sit for one heartbeat, then killed its theater. "Plain meaning," she said. "A venue intake desk can say a packet was refused. It cannot make that packet my review. It cannot make Ethan's face my answer. It cannot make Olivia's refusal travel under Leah's name." Ethan looked at her then. The guilt in him had lost its place to hide. "I can't clear that hold by speaking," he said. "And I will not make you sign to protect me from looking uninformed." Martha laughed, short and sharp. "How noble. He abandons you and calls it restraint." She lifted her hand toward the maid without looking away from Isabella. "Bring the guest coat. If Miss Mercer wants outside consequences, let her stand outside when the refusal posts." The maid flinched toward the hall. Olivia moved into her path. "No," Olivia said. "No coat, no escort, no staged exit. She does not become difficult because you need witnesses." Alvarez crouched by the tape. He wrote on a white evidence card: FRONT GATE DELIVERY CONDITION - NO LIVE REVIEW AUTHORITY SHOWN. He placed it beside the silver letter opener. Isabella picked up the house phone receiver with two fingers and held it away from her ear, speaker open. "Gate," she said. "Record this before the countdown expires. The named addressee declines delivery acknowledgment under current conditions. She does not decline live review. She does not open the packet. She requests the intake mark the hold pending live review, not refused by silence." The courier swore softly, too far from the microphone to make the word official. Martha stepped onto the tape. The letter opener shifted under her shoe with a bright scrape. Every head in the room turned toward the sound. Isabella did not raise her voice. "Record Martha Thorne crossing the marked line and contacting the separated signing instrument." Martha froze with one foot on silver. For the first time, the front-gate pressure had a body in the room. The guard came back breathless. "Courier says intake can mark pending if the named addressee repeats it live before the final minute." Ethan looked at Isabella, then away before it could become a plea. The phone on the gate clicked. "Final minute," the guard said. "Courier is asking whether Leah Mercer will speak under that name."
