📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 130: The Second Key Turns
The lock turned once, then stopped with its tongue still caught somewhere inside the west service arch.
Alvarez had his hand up before the second click could come. "Hold the door."
No one in the hall answered.
Martha smiled as if silence were obedience. "You see? A house this old does not wait for one frightened girl to understand its doors."
Olivia did not look at the dropped key ring. If she looked too long, Martha would make it feel like a choice already made. She kept her eyes on the arch where the sound had come from.
"No key body," Olivia said. "No holder identity. No lock contents. Exterior facts only. Lock-side position. Access category. Timing. Relation to the blocked handoff. Whether it can bypass live subject review."
Richard made a small sound, not quite a breath. Beside him, Ethan stayed still until Alvarez gave one sharp nod.
"No one answers the door from this side," Ethan said. "If it opens, the event is coming from outside your line."
Martha snapped her fingers toward the maid. "Move the wrap. It is in everyone's way."
The maid took one frightened step.
Isabella moved faster.
She did not touch the wrap. She took the evidence tent she had placed beside it and slid the marble ashtray from the console table across the floor with the toe of her shoe, stopping it between the dropped wrap and the west arch. The ashtray was heavy enough to block a casual sweep, plain enough that everyone could see it had not been hidden.
"No," Isabella said. "The first key, the wrap, and that second sound stay separated. If anyone moves one object now, they are not cleaning. They are joining the two attempts."
The maid froze.
Miss Vale stepped away from the wall. "I saw the wrap fall before the key dropped. I heard the lock after the key dropped."
Martha turned on her. "You heard an old house settle."
"I heard a lock," Miss Vale said, voice shaking. "And I heard you tell him there was more than one key."
That cost her. Her mouth pinched white around the words, and the maid's hand flew to her own throat as if Miss Vale had cut a rope neither woman had known was there.
The black phone on the table lit without ringing.
SECOND ACCESS FACTS ONLY:
Lock-side position: far side of west service arch.
Second access category: service circulation access attempt.
Timing: after first handoff blocked.
Relation: parallel to Household Proxy client-route delegation.
Bypass effect: not established before live subject review.
Olivia read the last line once.
Martha tried to speak over her. "Service circulation is not a crime."
"No," Olivia said. "But using it after I blocked the first handoff is not circulation. It is pressure."
Alvarez crouched without crossing the tape and set a second strip of yellow marker along the marble, from the fallen key ring to the arch. "Attempt one outside threshold. Attempt two outside threshold. Same pressure chain."
Martha's smile thinned.
"You have no authority to chain my household together because a girl is upset."
Richard stepped to the strip but kept his shoes behind it. "I will testify that I heard the second lock after Olivia refused the first key. I will not testify that family property makes it harmless."
The words landed in the room like a glass set down very carefully.
Olivia felt the floor under her feet. Her body wanted to shake. She made it stand instead.
"Record this," she said to Alvarez. "The second access attempt does not open a door, does not move a person, does not cure the blocked handoff, and does not become my review."
From beyond the arch came a scrape, soft but deliberate. Someone on the far side had let go of the handle.
The maid began to cry without sound.
Martha reached for the console table, not for balance but for command. Her fingers closed around the empty place where the bell should have been. The crystal dome held it across the room, useless and visible.
For the first time all night, she had to raise her voice without a tool in her hand.
"Then she leaves through the front," Martha said. "If she refuses the household doors, let her meet the terms she thinks will save her."
The south phone rang once.
Alvarez answered on speaker.
A woman's voice, formal and outside the house, said, "Front gate has a courier packet for Leah Mercer. Delivery category: engagement terms. Signature requested before external office access."
Ethan's face changed before he could stop it.
Isabella looked at him, then at Olivia.
Martha had lost the side door. She had found the front gate.
