📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 50: The Vault Corridor
The service elevator chimed below them like a polite lie.
No one in the east sitting room moved. Alvarez kept one palm sealed over the drawer seam, her other hand raised toward the wall panel as if the screen itself might lunge. Olivia stood rigid beside Richard, her refusal still hanging in the air, fragile and terrifying because it had worked. Martha watched the red point blink outside Vault Corridor B and recovered her face one inch at a time.
"Routine household-care movement," she said. "This house has medical staff, archivists, security vendors, restoration people. You are turning a private home into a crime scene because a blinking dot frightened my daughter."
"Your daughter asked for court preservation," Nora said through Alvarez's phone. "That request is on record."
Martha turned on Olivia with wounded precision. "You asked strangers to raid your grandmother's corridor because this woman taught you to be ashamed of being cared for."
Olivia's mouth tightened. The old shame came for her again, but it did not get all the way in. "I did not ask them to raid anything. I asked them not to use my consent as a shredder."
Richard looked at her then, really looked, and the hurt in his face was quieter than apology. "That was a clean sentence," he said.
The red point moved.
It slid one narrow inch deeper on the map, from the service-elevator vestibule to the threshold line marked B-VAULT INTERIOR ACCESS. The drawer under Alvarez's hand buzzed in answer, not loudly this time, but with the intimate sound of a device recognizing its pair.
Alvarez did not lift her palm. "Mr. Hunt. One visible fact. Are the drawer and corridor devices paired?"
Ethan stepped only far enough for the wall camera to catch him beside the screen. Both hands stayed open. "Visible label says: paired event dependency. Drawer disposal condition can be completed by manual pull or by secured corridor entry." His eyes flicked once to Isabella, then back to Alvarez. "If someone opens that corridor from the inside, the drawer may treat it as authorization."
Martha gave a thin laugh. "May. Visible label says may, Detective. Are you now seizing my vault because a tech executive read a household appliance?"
"No," Isabella said.
The room turned toward her. She hated that instinct, the way every accusation tried to make her the center so the evidence could be called her ambition. She kept her hands loose, away from the drawer, away from the panel, away from Ethan.
"Do not seize the vault because of me," she said to Alvarez. "Preserve the corridor because the system just admitted the drawer can be wiped from somewhere else."
Nora's voice sharpened. "That is the narrow action. External preservation, no entry unless there is immediate destruction risk. Camera stills, door state, elevator position, identity of any person in the vestibule. Detective, get a second officer to the lower service spine. Do not abandon the drawer."
Alvarez spoke into her radio without taking her hand off the seam. "Unit three, lower service spine. Preserve Vault Corridor B exterior. Body camera on. Do not enter unless you see active evidence destruction or a person in danger."
Static answered. Then a man's voice, breathless from stairs: "Copy. Moving."
Martha's calm cracked. "You cannot send officers into my private lower level without house counsel."
"Then call house counsel," Alvarez said. "With your hands where I can see them."
For the first time that night, Martha looked at her own hands as if they had betrayed her. One rested near the carved edge of a side table. A silver bell sat there, old-fashioned, decorative, useless unless someone in the house had been trained to answer it.
Olivia saw the look. So did Isabella.
"Don't touch the bell," Olivia said.
Martha's smile returned too quickly. "Darling, it is a bell."
"So was the drawer," Olivia said.
The radio crackled again. "Detective, I am at the lower hall. Service elevator is open. No visible passenger. Vault Corridor B exterior camera is live. Door indicator is green."
"Green means?" Alvarez asked.
Ethan answered before he could stop himself, then held still for the consequence. "Unlocked or recently opened."
Nora said, "Visible interpretation only."
"Visible interpretation," Ethan corrected, jaw tight.
The officer downstairs spoke again, lower now. "There is a tablet mounted beside the vault door. Screen reads: inside-open event accepted. Drawer cache disposal waiting for requester redaction terms."
Martha inhaled.
It was small. Almost elegant. But Isabella heard it over the radio static, over Olivia's shaken breathing, over the drawer's faint electrical pulse.
Alvarez's eyes fixed on Martha. "Requester?"
Before Martha could answer, the wall panel in the sitting room refreshed. The red point outside Vault Corridor B split into two labels. One remained `M. T. Household Care`. The second appeared inside the corridor in a colder shade of blue.
Requester present: Martha Thorne master biometric.
Olivia stepped back as if the floor had opened.
And beneath that, a final line began counting down from sixty seconds.
Confirm redaction terms to complete donor-media disposal.
