Olivia stared at the wall panel as if it had spoken in Martha's voice. Use family member consent to proceed. The sentence looked clean enough to belong in a hospital form or a trust office signature packet. It did not show the drawer's hum, Alvarez's still hand, or the way Martha had moved her body so Olivia had to look past her mother before she could look at the screen. "You can end this," Martha said softly. "Tell them you consent. Open the drawer yourself. Then no one can say Detective Alvarez forced a private family search." Nora's voice cut through the speaker. "Olivia, do not answer while she is framing the options." Martha gave the phone a wounded glance. "There. A lawyer in another room is instructing my daughter not to protect her own home." Olivia's fingers tightened around the edge of Richard's tablet. Richard did not take it from her. He only shifted closer, enough that she could feel him there without making the choice for her. "If I say no," Olivia said, "everyone will think I know there is something in there." "No," Isabella said before Martha could answer. She kept both hands visible at her sides. "They will know you refused to be used as the search warrant." Martha's eyes snapped to her. "You do not speak for my daughter." "I am speaking for the drawer," Isabella said. "It is already trying to make her signature do more than she understands." Alvarez glanced at the panel. "Mr. Hunt. Visible fact only. Does that family override cancel preservation or open the drawer?" Ethan did not move toward the tablet. He leaned just enough for the camera to catch his empty palms and the screen in the same frame. "Visible language says: household privacy override transfers consent authority to Olivia Thorne for private-family container access." His jaw tightened. "Under that, smaller line: opening event satisfies donor-media cache disposal condition." Olivia's breath left her. Nora said, "So if she consents, the drawer opens and the wipe condition completes." "Visible language supports that," Ethan said. "I am not touching it." Martha turned to Olivia with the kind of gentleness that had once made entire rooms obey her. "Darling, listen to what he just said. If you open it, you control it. You prove no detective, no Voss claimant, no angry lawyer put their hands inside our private things." "And the donor-media cache disappears," Olivia said. Martha's face softened further. "Do you want your private donor humiliation preserved for strangers? Do you want court clerks reading what they made you say? What they made you wear? What they made you promise?" The old Olivia almost answered. Isabella saw it in the way her shoulders curled inward, the way shame made her smaller before anger could find her. Then the drawer buzzed again, louder this time. The panel changed from blue to a thin amber pulse. Remote wipe pending. Awaiting manual pull or household privacy override. Alvarez's hand flattened harder over the drawer seam. "No one opens it." Martha's voice sharpened. "You are physically preventing my daughter from exercising her own household privacy rights." "I am preventing evidence destruction," Alvarez said. "Evidence of what?" Martha demanded. "Of a mother arranging care for a daughter who was spiraling in public?" Olivia flinched at the word spiraling. Martha saw it and pressed, merciless now that softness had failed. "They will publish that, too. Your panic. Your engagement. Your donor video. Your father will stand there and let them say you were too broken to know who loved you." Richard closed his eyes, opened them, and said, "Olivia, I did let people say that. I am not letting her make your consent the eraser." For the first time, Martha looked afraid. Olivia looked from Richard to Isabella, then to Ethan's raised hands, then finally to the drawer. Her voice came out unsteady, but the words landed clean. "I do not consent to open that drawer. I do not consent to a family override. I want it preserved by court authority, not my humiliation." The amber pulse stopped. For one second, no one breathed. Then the panel made a low sound that did not belong to a household device. It was an emergency tone, blunt and official, and the words on the wall rewrote themselves without waiting for a pull. Override refused. Remote wipe attempt escalated. Private aide location sharing activated. A small map bloomed beneath the text, centered not on the east sitting room but on the lower service spine of Thorne House. One moving point blinked in red beside a label that made Martha's mouth go bloodless. M. T. Household Care: live device currently outside Vault Corridor B. Alvarez lifted her eyes from the screen to Martha. "Who is in your vault corridor?" The drawer buzzed once more, and from somewhere below the floor came the faint, unmistakable sound of a service elevator arriving.
