Fifty-nine seconds remained when Martha Thorne remembered how to smile. It was not the smile she gave donors. That one was warm, trained, photographed from the left. This smile was thinner, meant for rooms where servants lowered their eyes and family members learned to mistake obedience for protection. "That is an archival maintenance template," she said. "A master biometric can remain in household systems after proxy access is created. Anyone who has ever managed a controlled estate would know that." Alvarez did not lift her palm from the drawer seam. "Then you will not mind standing still while the terms are preserved." "I mind a detective using a private home interface to stage theater around family records." Olivia stared at the blue label on the wall panel as if it had reached through the screen and touched her throat. Isabella wanted to step toward her. She did not. If she moved first, Martha would make this about Leah's revenge before Olivia had a chance to make it about Olivia's consent. The countdown dropped to forty-six. Nora's voice came through Alvarez's phone. "Lower officer, read only the redaction category. Do not select anything. Do not open content." Static snapped once. The officer below sounded closer to the tablet now, breath controlled but not calm. "Screen says: requester redaction terms. Disposal will remove donor-media cache tied to Olivia Thorne authorization file, ERV-19 cross-reference preview, and Voss death-supporting attachments from household archive display." The room went still. Isabella felt the words try to turn into a blade inside her. Voss death-supporting attachments. Not proof of death. Supporting attachments, as if the house had been carrying pieces of a story Martha could arrange around any body she needed. Martha's eyes flicked toward the silver bell. "Do not," Olivia said. The command surprised even her. Richard's hand rose behind her shoulder, but he stopped before touching her. For once, he let her stand without translating her fear into weakness. Martha softened her face. "Darling, donor media can mean anything. Charity testimonial drafts. Foundation gala recordings. Old treatment material. You are exhausted, and they are making you read machine language like a confession." "It is using my authorization file," Olivia said. Her voice shook once and then steadied. "You told me that file only protected me from public embarrassment." "It did." "Then why does it support a Voss death?" The countdown dropped to twenty-nine. No one answered quickly enough. Alvarez spoke toward the radio. "Continue category readout. No content." "Section two," the officer said. "Requester confirms redaction protects living family member privacy and uncontested decedent identification. Confirmation completes disposal. Audit copy retained only if external preservation is initiated before countdown expiration." "There is the trap," Nora said. "If the timer reaches zero, Martha's biometric completes disposal under Olivia's privacy." "Objection to legal characterization," Martha snapped. "Noted by no one," Nora replied. Ethan shifted half a step, then stopped himself with both hands visible. "Detective. One visible fact?" Alvarez's eyes stayed on Martha. "One." "The screen separates disposal from audit copy," Ethan said. "It does not require opening the drawer. It requires a preservation request before the timer expires." "And who can request it?" Alvarez asked. Ethan swallowed. "Visible list is collapsed." Martha seized the gap. "Exactly. No one in this room has authority. The family should wait for counsel." Olivia moved before Isabella could breathe. She stepped closer to the wall camera, not touching the panel, close enough that the lens would capture her face and the timer together. "I am the living family member named in the privacy excuse," Olivia said. "I do not authorize disposal. I do not authorize my donor file to support any death record. I request external preservation." The panel pulsed. For one bright second, the countdown stopped at seventeen. Then the officer downstairs cursed under his breath. "Detective, corridor camera still just populated. Non-staff face in the vestibule. System label says requester witness." Martha said, "No." It came out too quickly. Too naked. Alvarez's phone lit with a grainy still: the open vault threshold, the empty service elevator, and a woman in a pale medical mask standing beside the mounted tablet. She was not staff. She was not Olivia. She was not Martha. Richard made a sound like the floor had vanished. Isabella saw why a moment later. The woman's left collarbone showed above the mask strap, bare and unmarked.
