📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 118: The Counsel Name - Consequence
00:11.
The third option glowed brighter, patient and obscene.
ALLOW COUNSEL NAME ASSERTION TO SUPPORT DELAY AUTHORITY.
It did not look like a threat. That was what made it one. The house had learned how to make surrender resemble procedure.
Martha's voice came through the sealed door, low enough to sound almost kind. "Olivia, darling, expensive counsel exists so families do not have to bleed in public."
Olivia's hand trembled once above the glass.
Isabella did not touch her. She wanted to. She wanted to close her fingers around Olivia's wrist and drag her away from every machine Martha had taught to ask for consent with a knife under the table.
Instead, Isabella said, "If silence chooses it, the room will treat fear as permission."
Olivia inhaled.
00:09.
"Alvarez," she said, "state the choices I can make without opening the sealed name."
Alvarez moved closer to the table, pen ready. "You may preserve the counsel name category as disputed. You may request authority support review without identity exposure. You may decline to let the assertion support delay authority by subject inaction. You may not request the counsel identity, notice body, legal advice, contact path, protected source identity, or office body content in this window."
Martha laughed once. "Listen to the officer teach my granddaughter how to fear a lawyer."
The live witness flinched at granddaughter.
Olivia did not.
"No," Olivia said. "She is teaching me where the wall is."
Richard's throat worked. He looked as if every old dinner table in the house had risen behind his eyes. "Olivia."
She glanced at him, guarded.
He kept his hands at his sides. "When I heard names like that, I stopped asking questions. That was my failure. Do not inherit it from me."
The room changed at the sentence. Not softened. Sharpened. Martha's silence behind the door became a thing with edges.
00:06.
Olivia touched the first option.
PRESERVE COUNSEL NAME CATEGORY AS DISPUTED.
The panel flashed amber.
DISPUTED PRESERVATION REQUEST: RECEIVED.
FAMILY COUNSEL INTAKE ASSERTION: NOT ACCEPTED AS DELAY AUTHORITY BY CATEGORY ALONE.
The live witness covered her mouth with the back of her hand. The sound she made was small, almost swallowed, but it was not fear.
Martha struck the door. "You think amber saves you?"
Olivia touched the second option before the echo died.
REQUEST AUTHORITY SUPPORT REVIEW WITHOUT IDENTITY EXPOSURE.
00:04.
The glass went white.
AUTHORITY SUPPORT REVIEW: OPENED.
REVIEW SCOPE: CATEGORY AND ROUTE RELATION ONLY.
COUNSEL IDENTITY: SEALED.
NOTICE BODY: SEALED.
LEGAL ADVICE: SEALED.
CONTACT PATH: SEALED.
OFFICE BODY CONTENT: SEALED.
Ethan's eyes flicked once to Alvarez.
"Visible consequence only," Alvarez said.
Ethan nodded. "The delay route can be tested without naming the lawyer. The house cannot use the shadow of counsel to stop external source confirmation unless the authority support survives review."
"Plain meaning," Isabella said, because Martha had already begun breathing like she was preparing another fog. "A rich counsel label does not get to pause the truth just because everyone in the family was trained to bow to it."
Richard closed his eyes.
Martha's voice turned cold. "You are all mistaking manners for law."
Olivia finally looked toward the sealed door.
"No," she said. "You mistook manners for law, and you made us pay for it."
The panel gave a sharp tone.
00:01.
ALLOW COUNSEL NAME ASSERTION TO SUPPORT DELAY AUTHORITY: BLOCKED BY SUBJECT DISPUTE.
DEFAULT RISK: ZERO.
IMMEDIATE DELAY AUTHORITY: NOT POSTED.
For one bright second, the room belonged to Olivia.
Not to Martha's door. Not to Richard's regret. Not to Ethan's knowledge. Not even to Isabella's fury. Olivia had chosen the line, and the system had been forced to mark it.
Alvarez wrote the result slowly, each word landing like a nail.
The live witness stepped fully to Alvarez's side of the table.
"She did not let the name become a hand over my mouth," the witness whispered.
Olivia's face broke at that. Only a little. Enough for Isabella to see the cost.
Martha did too.
"Careful," Martha said. "Once you ask who assigned counsel, you may dislike the client more than the name."
The panel answered before anyone could respond.
NEXT SAFE OBJECT AVAILABLE: ASSIGNING CLIENT.
AVAILABLE EXTERIOR FACTS: ASSIGNMENT SOURCE CATEGORY, ROUTE RELATION, AUTHORITY SUPPORT CATEGORY.
ASSIGNING CLIENT IDENTITY: SEALED.
CLIENT NOTICE BODY: SEALED.
PROTECTED CONTENT BODIES: SEALED.
NEW PRESSURE WINDOW: 00:36.
Olivia stared at the words. "Assigning client," she said.
Isabella felt the trap shift under the floor. The name had failed to rule the room. Now Martha wanted the client behind it to do what the counsel name could not.
Behind the sealed door, Martha's bracelet clicked once against the wood.
"Ask carefully," she said. "Some clients are family only until the record names them otherwise."
