📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 119: The Assigning Client - Pressure
00:36.
Assigning client.
The words sat on the glass like a person who had been in the room all along and had only now decided to breathe.
Olivia did not touch the prompt.
Martha's bracelet clicked once more against the other side of the sealed door. "There are reasons people hire counsel through proper channels."
"Proper," Isabella said softly, "is doing too much work in that sentence."
Olivia's mouth tightened, but her eyes stayed on the panel.
ASSIGNING CLIENT IDENTITY: SEALED.
CLIENT NOTICE BODY: SEALED.
AVAILABLE EXTERIOR FACTS: ASSIGNMENT SOURCE CATEGORY, ROUTE RELATION, AUTHORITY SUPPORT CATEGORY.
00:31.
The live witness had gone very still beside Alvarez. A hidden client was worse than a hidden name. A lawyer's name could intimidate. A client could point back into the family, into an office, into the machine that had prepared every other trap and called it care.
"If I ask wrong," Olivia said, "she will call it exposure."
"If you do not ask," Isabella said, "she will let the word client do what the word counsel failed to do."
Richard made a sound like he had been struck, but he did not step forward.
Olivia turned her head just enough to see him. "Do you know who it is?"
The old room seemed to wait with Martha.
Richard looked at the sealed door, then at the glass. "I know who this family taught me to assume it would be," he said. "That is not evidence. I will not give Martha a guess she can turn into authority."
Martha's voice sharpened. "How noble, Richard. Refusing memory after spending a lifetime living on it."
He flinched. He did not answer.
Olivia touched the safe-facts menu.
"Alvarez, I request assignment source category only," she said. "No identity. No client notice body. No counsel identity. No legal advice. No contact path."
Alvarez's pen hovered. "Stated and limited."
Ethan's gaze moved to the route line but he stayed silent until Alvarez looked at him.
"Visible route behavior, if it posts," Alvarez said.
The panel pulsed.
ASSIGNMENT SOURCE CATEGORY REQUEST: RECEIVED.
IDENTITY ACCESS: NOT OPENED.
CLIENT NOTICE BODY: NOT OPENED.
00:24.
Martha exhaled behind the door, almost amused. "A category will not comfort you."
"It is not supposed to," Olivia said. "It is supposed to stop you from hiding behind a shape."
The readout appeared.
ASSIGNMENT SOURCE CATEGORY: HOUSEHOLD PROXY CLIENT ROUTE.
ROUTE RELATION: FAMILY COUNSEL INTAKE ASSERTION TO OBJECTING OFFICE DELAY RESPONSE.
AUTHORITY SUPPORT CATEGORY: REQUESTED, NOT POSTED.
For half a second no one moved.
Then the live witness whispered, "Household Proxy."
Alvarez wrote it down.
Isabella felt the payoff hit the room, hard and clean. Not a name. Not a body. Not a privileged conversation. Just the exterior truth Martha had tried to dress in money: the client route wore the same household machinery that had printed badges, prepared witnesses, and tried to turn Olivia's silence into consent.
"Plain meaning," Isabella said. "The client behind the counsel intake is not showing as independent authority. It is showing as a Household Proxy client route, and its authority support has not posted."
Martha's hand struck the door so hard the silver bell on the evidence cloth shivered.
"You will not reduce a family client to a service label."
Olivia looked at the bell until it stopped moving.
"You reduced me to one," she said.
00:15.
The panel changed again.
FOLLOW-UP AVAILABLE:
CAN HOUSEHOLD PROXY CLIENT ROUTE SUPPORT DELAY AUTHORITY BEFORE AUTHORITY SUPPORT CATEGORY POSTS?
OPTIONS:
PRESERVE ASSIGNING CLIENT CATEGORY AS DISPUTED.
REQUEST AUTHORITY SUPPORT CATEGORY REVIEW.
ALLOW ASSIGNING CLIENT SOURCE CATEGORY TO SUPPORT DELAY AUTHORITY.
The third option glowed faintly, not as bright as before, but familiar enough to make the witness step back.
Richard saw it too. "It is the same habit," he said. "Different costume."
Martha laughed. "Careful. Some costumes are inheritance."
Olivia kept her hand above the glass.
The timer dropped to 00:10.
Isabella could see the choice building in Olivia's face. Not panic. Not obedience. A thin, furious precision.
Olivia said, "Then the inheritance can wait its turn in review."
The panel waited for her finger, and the Household Proxy client route began to glow as if it expected the house to answer before she could.
