📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 117: The Counsel Name - Pressure
00:31.
Olivia's fingers stayed above the glass, not touching, not retreating. The sealed door held Martha's whisper on the other side like perfume over a knife.
"Some names are expensive to accuse."
Richard's face went gray at that sentence. Not because he knew the name. Because he knew the habit.
Isabella saw it in him and hated how ordinary it had been in this house: a famous lawyer's surname, a private office, a raised eyebrow at the club, and suddenly pain was asked to prove it had standing.
Olivia did not look back at Martha.
"Alvarez," she said, "I am not asking who the counsel is. I am asking what kind of counsel name is being used."
Alvarez's pen lifted. "State the protection."
Olivia read from the panel in a voice that shook once and then steadied. "Counsel identity remains sealed. Counsel notice body remains sealed. Legal advice remains sealed. Contact path remains sealed. Protected source identity remains sealed."
The live witness breathed through her mouth, silent and careful.
Martha laughed behind the door. "Listen to yourself. You are afraid to say the name, yet you think you can challenge it."
That was the trap. Isabella felt it close around the room: if Olivia asked for the identity, Martha would call it exposure. If Olivia refused to ask, the name would become authority by shadow.
Isabella stepped only close enough for Olivia to hear her. "A category is not an accusation. It is a question about power."
Olivia nodded, once.
She touched the safe prompt.
NAME CATEGORY QUESTION: OPEN.
REQUEST AVAILABLE: COUNSEL NAME CATEGORY ONLY.
ROUTE RELATION AVAILABLE: OBJECTING OFFICE DELAY RESPONSE TO FAMILY COUNSEL INTAKE.
COUNSEL IDENTITY: SEALED.
COUNSEL NOTICE BODY: SEALED.
00:25.
Ethan's gaze went to Alvarez, not the screen.
Alvarez gave him one sharp nod. "Visible route behavior only."
"Visible route only," Ethan said. "Objecting Office Delay Response moves into Family Counsel Intake. That is intake behavior, not proven delay authority."
Martha's hand struck the door once. "Mr. Hunt has always been gifted at making other people's counsel sound suspicious."
Ethan did not answer.
Olivia did.
"No," she said. "He said it is not proved."
The panel pulsed again, as if the house resented the distinction.
NAME CATEGORY RESPONSE READY.
DISPLAY WITHOUT IDENTITY: YES / NO.
00:19.
Richard made a small movement, then stopped himself. The old Richard Thorne would have filled the silence with a family correction, a name remembered from dinners, a warning dressed as experience.
This Richard kept his hands open.
"In this family," he said quietly, "we treated certain counsel names as if they were permission slips. I have no right to tell you who this is. I will not guess. But I can say the habit was real."
The witness looked at him then. Not forgiveness. Attention.
Martha's voice sharpened. "Richard, do not perform shame for strangers."
Olivia's jaw tightened.
"They are not strangers to what you did," she said.
She pressed YES.
The panel brightened, but no name appeared.
COUNSEL NAME CATEGORY: FAMILY COUNSEL INTAKE ASSERTION.
IDENTITY STATUS: SEALED.
NOTICE BODY STATUS: SEALED.
AUTHORITY SUPPORT: NOT ESTABLISHED BY NAME CATEGORY ALONE.
ROUTE RELATION: OBJECTING OFFICE DELAY RESPONSE TO FAMILY COUNSEL INTAKE.
For the first time since the word counsel appeared, Martha did not answer.
The witness stared at the line. "Then it is not authority."
Alvarez wrote that down before Martha could recover.
Olivia's shoulders dropped by less than an inch. Then she turned toward the sealed door.
"Then the name is not a throne," she said. "It is a category waiting to prove itself."
The witness let out a wet, startled breath. Martha had not produced an outside authority. She had produced the social shape of one, and Olivia had made the room see the costume.
"Plain meaning," Isabella said, because the room needed it before Martha could fog it. "They are trying to make a family-counsel intake label carry the weight of a real delay authority. The category alone does not prove the right to pause external source confirmation."
Alvarez wrote quickly.
Martha's voice lowered. "You are all very brave with a sealed name. Let it open, and see how brave you remain."
Olivia's hand hovered over the next prompt.
The panel gave one more tone.
IMMEDIATE AUTHORITY POST: BLOCKED.
DEFAULT RISK AT ZERO: SUBJECT INACTION.
FOLLOW-UP QUESTION AVAILABLE:
CAN FAMILY COUNSEL INTAKE ASSERTION SUPPORT DELAY AUTHORITY WITHOUT IDENTITY OR NOTICE BODY EXPOSURE?
OPTIONS:
PRESERVE COUNSEL NAME CATEGORY AS DISPUTED.
REQUEST AUTHORITY SUPPORT REVIEW WITHOUT IDENTITY EXPOSURE.
ALLOW COUNSEL NAME ASSERTION TO SUPPORT DELAY AUTHORITY.
00:12.
The room went still. Martha had lost the instant post. She still had the countdown.
Richard looked at Olivia. "Do not let my old world spend your twelve seconds."
The witness took one step closer to Alvarez's side of the table.
Olivia kept her eyes on the last option, the one Martha wanted her to leave untouched until silence chose it.
"No," Olivia said. "If the name wants authority, it can survive a question."
The panel counted down to 00:11, and the third option began to glow as if silence were already reaching for Olivia's hand.
