📖 The Sovereign’s Ledger
Chapter 10: Night of the Wraiths
Two nights remained until the full moon.
The air in the Bloodmoon fortress was thick with a vibrating, electric anticipation. Ever since Elder Orion had exposed the parasitic tether leeching my soul, Kaelen had not left my side for more than a few seconds. He was a constant, towering presence of absolute protection, his aura wrapping around me like a physical shield, ensuring that Silas could not draw a single drop of my suppressed pureblood energy.
I lay in the center of the colossal, silk-draped bed, entirely swallowed by Kaelen’s heavy, pine-scented blankets. The soft crackle of the fireplace cast long, dancing shadows against the marble walls. Kaelen stood on the balcony, his broad, bare back to me as he spoke in low, hushed tones with his Beta, Marcus, finalizing the perimeter security.
I closed my eyes, letting the exhaustion of the past nineteen years pull me toward sleep. For the first time, the darkness behind my eyelids didn't contain the freezing dungeon or the sharp crack of Silas’s silver whip.
But my newfound peace was a fragile, dangerous thing.
A subtle, unnatural shift in the air pressure made my eyes snap open. The ambient temperature in the suite suddenly plummeted, carrying with it a scent I knew intimately, a scent that made my blood run instantly cold.
Concentrated wolfsbane. And stale, metallic Silvermane steel.
They didn't come through the heavy oak doors. They descended like spiders from the vaulted ceiling. Four figures cloaked in pitch-black tactical gear dropped silently onto the plush rug. Their faces were obscured by dark masks, but the crest etched into their leather armor—a howling silver wolf—told me everything I needed to know.
These were the Wraiths. Silas’s elite, hand-picked assassination and retrieval squad. The ghosts he sent when he wanted someone to disappear without a trace.
Panic, cold and sharp as a blade, seized my throat. I tried to scream for Kaelen, but one of the assassins moved with terrifying, preternatural speed. He crossed the room in a blur, his gloved hand clamping brutally over my mouth while his other hand raised a thick, heavy syringe filled with a glowing, neon-green liquid. A lethal dose of paralytic wolfsbane.
"The Alpha Heir wants his property back, you little bitch," the lead assassin hissed, his eyes crinkling in a cruel smile behind his mask. "He's practically losing his mind without his battery. We're going to drag you back by your hair, and you're never seeing the light of day again."
He raised the syringe, aiming it directly at my neck.
I thrashed wildly, my nails digging into his armored arm, the horrifying specter of the dungeon rushing back to swallow me whole. My map was gone. My escape was dead. Silas had found me.
But Silas’s elite assassins had made one catastrophic, fatal miscalculation.
They thought they were infiltrating a normal pack. They had forgotten they were standing in the den of the Mad King.
*CRASH.*
The reinforced glass doors of the balcony didn't just break; they exploded inward, the thick glass shattering into a million glittering fragments.
The lead assassin didn't even have time to turn his head. A massive, clawed hand, entirely engulfed in an aura of pure, pitch-black killing intent, materialized from the shadows and clamped down on his face.
Kaelen didn't yell. He didn't utter a single war cry. The sound that ripped from his chest was a demonic, dual-toned vibration of absolute, world-ending violence.
With a sickening *CRUNCH*, Kaelen crushed the assassin’s skull like an overripe piece of fruit, tossing his lifeless body across the room as if it weighed nothing.
The remaining three Wraiths froze, their arrogant confidence instantly vaporizing into sheer, unadulterated terror. They were considered the deadliest men in the Silvermane pack, but standing before them was not a man.
Kaelen had entered his half-beast form.
His already massive frame had expanded, his muscles bulging and tearing the fabric of his dark trousers. Obsidian fur bristled along his forearms and the thick cords of his neck. His hands ended in elongated, razor-sharp talons that dripped with the first assassin's blood. His jaw was distended, fully revealing a terrifying array of lethal, bone-crushing fangs. But it was his eyes that stole the breath from the room—they were a solid, glowing, apocalyptic crimson, completely devoid of anything resembling human mercy.
"Kill him!" one of the Wraiths shrieked, his voice breaking in panic. "Use the silver nets!"
Two of the assassins unclipped heavy, silver-weighted mesh nets from their belts, hurling them through the air to entrap the towering beast.
It was a pathetic, almost comical attempt.
Kaelen didn't even bother to dodge. He simply reached out and caught the flying silver nets with his bare, clawed hands. The silver seared his flesh, hissing and smoking on contact, but the Mad King didn't even flinch. With a feral snarl, he ripped the magically reinforced steel netting completely in half, discarding it like cheap cobwebs.
The assassin who threw the net backed away, his eyes wide with horrified disbelief. "Impossible..."
In a blur of shadow and extreme violence, Kaelen was upon him. The Alpha’s hand shot out, his massive claws plunging directly through the thick, enchanted leather armor of the assassin’s chest. The man gasped, a spray of blood escaping his lips, as Kaelen physically tore his ribcage open, tossing the broken corpse to the floor.
The third assassin drew a jagged, wolfsbane-laced broadsword, his hands shaking so violently the blade rattled. He lunged forward in a desperate, suicidal strike.
Kaelen swatted the heavy steel sword away with the back of his hand, shattering the blade into three pieces. Before the assassin could even register the loss of his weapon, Kaelen’s hand wrapped around his throat. He hoisted the Wraith three feet into the air, the man's legs kicking helplessly.
The Mad King slowly turned his head, his glowing crimson eyes locking onto the final, trembling survivor—the captain of the squad, who was currently backing toward the doorway, absolutely paralyzed by the overwhelming, dimensional gap in their power. Silas had sent them to retrieve a hostage; he had marched them straight into a meat grinder.
"Tell the parasite who calls himself your Alpha Heir," Kaelen rumbled, his demonic voice shaking the marble walls of the suite. He tightened his grip on the assassin suspended in his grasp, and with a horrifyingly casual twist of his wrist, snapped the man's neck. He dropped the body at his feet. **"That he does not have a sister anymore. He only has an executioner."**
The squad captain didn't say a word. He turned and fled, bursting through the suite doors in a desperate bid for survival.
Kaelen let out a low, predatory hum. He didn't chase him. Instead, he simply mind-linked his Beta.
*“Marcus. There is a rat running down the eastern corridor. Take his legs. Send the rest of him back to Silvermane in a box.”*
The brutal, utterly one-sided massacre was over in less than thirty seconds.
The opulent master suite was a war zone, painted in the blood of Silas's greatest weapons. Yet, as I sat in the center of the bed, clutching the blankets to my chest, I realized something miraculous. Not a single drop of blood, not a single shard of glass, had touched me. Kaelen had meticulously orchestrated the absolute carnage to ensure my perfect safety.
The suffocating terror that had defined my entire existence—the constant fear of Silas’s reach, the dread of the dungeon, the panic of being dragged back to my personal hell—evaporated.
Kaelen stood amidst the ruined bodies, his chest heaving as he slowly forced his half-beast shift to recede. His claws shrank back into his fingertips, and the dark fur faded into his skin. But when he finally turned to look at me, his crimson eyes were wide with a sudden, devastating vulnerability.
He looked at his blood-soaked hands, then at me, entirely expecting me to recoil from the monster he had just unleashed. He expected the fear.
"Elara..." he whispered, his voice cracking, thick with self-loathing. "I am sorry you had to see—"
I didn't let him finish.
I threw the heavy blankets aside and scrambled off the bed. I didn't care about the blood on the floor. I didn't care about the bodies of the men who had tormented me. I ran directly toward the most terrifying predator on the continent and threw my arms around his waist, burying my face against his solid, unyielding chest.
Kaelen froze, utterly paralyzed by my touch. He kept his bloody hands raised, desperately hovering in the air to avoid staining my clothes.
"You didn't scare me," I sobbed, the tears flowing freely now, but they were tears of an overwhelming, profound catharsis. "You didn't scare me, Kaelen. For the first time in my life... I'm not afraid."
A violent shudder ripped through his massive frame. With a low, desperate groan, Kaelen dropped to his knees right there on the blood-stained marble, wrapping his arms around my waist and pressing his forehead firmly against my stomach.
Silas’s elite shadow squad was dead. My brother’s reach was completely, physically severed. The terrifying bridge between my past and my present had been burned to ash by the Mad King’s wrath.
As Kaelen held me, pledging his absolute, unwavering devotion in the silence of the aftermath, I looked toward the shattered balcony doors. The full moon was just two days away. Silas was going to starve in the dark, and when my pureblood wolf finally shattered his parasitic curse, I was going to make sure my brother felt every ounce of the agony he had forced upon me.
