I woke to the unfamiliar sensation of absolute, unyielding warmth. For the first few seconds, my mind, still wired for survival in the freezing dungeons of Silvermane, panicked. I expected the harsh bite of cold stone against my cheek, the metallic scent of old blood, and the sharp kick of a guard’s boot. Instead, my cheek was pillowed against a chest of solid, blazing muscle. A heavy, possessive arm was slung securely over my waist, pulling my back flush against an impossibly broad torso. I was buried beneath a mountain of thick, fur-lined velvet blankets, but the true heat radiated from the Mad King himself. Kaelen was awake. He hadn't slept at all. His face was buried in the crook of my neck, his rhythmic breathing sending warm shivers across my collarbone. Slowly, reverently, his large, calloused hand stroked the length of my arm, his claws carefully retracted so only the soft pads of his fingers grazed my skin. It was a rhythmic, soothing motion, completely at odds with the violent, blood-soaked monster I had awakened the night before. "You are thinking too loudly, little wolf," Kaelen rumbled, his morning voice a dark, gravelly vibration that sent a jolt of electricity straight to my core. I swallowed hard, slowly turning over within the circle of his arms. The sheer size of him in the morning light was staggering. The dark, unruly waves of his obsidian hair fell across his forehead, and his eyes—a striking, mesmerizing gold in the calm of the dawn—locked onto mine. "I'm not used to... this," I whispered, gesturing vaguely to the massive, silk-draped bed and the opulent marble walls of his master suite. "I'm not used to waking up without pain." Kaelen’s jaw tightened, a dangerous flicker of crimson sparking in his irises. "Get used to it," he commanded softly, brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. "Because you will never know the cold again. Today, we find out exactly what your brother did to you. And then, we figure out how to completely obliterate him." Within the hour, the massive oak doors to the suite opened. Lyra entered first, balancing a heavy silver tray laden with roasted meats, fresh fruits, thick slices of warm bread, and steaming spiced tea. My stomach violently rumbled at the scent. For years, I had subsisted on moldy scraps and whatever I could steal from the packhouse garbage. Kaelen noticed my hesitation. He didn't order me to eat; instead, he took a piece of roasted venison, brought it to his own lips, and then offered it to me directly from his hand, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifyingly attentive devotion. He fed me himself, piece by piece, as if I were a sacred idol requiring an offering. The extreme contrast—from a starved slave to a Queen hand-fed by the continent's most lethal Alpha—made my head spin. Once the tray was cleared, Elder Orion, the blind Witch Doctor, stepped into the room. His milky eyes seemed to see straight through the physical world and into the ethereal. "My King," the elder rasped, bowing low. "Luna. I have brought the necessary reagents. We must examine the tether binding her soul." Kaelen’s demeanor instantly shifted from tender mate to a terrifying, authoritative warlord. He sat behind me on the edge of the bed, pulling me back so I rested safely between his powerful thighs, his arms wrapping around my waist to anchor me. "Do it, Orion. But if you cause her even a fraction of pain, I will snap your staff and your neck." "I understand, Alpha," Orion said with a solemn nod. The old man hobbled closer. He pulled a bundle of dried, silver-tipped sage from his robes and set it alight with a flick of his thumb. The smoke that billowed from the herbs wasn't grey; it was a shimmering, unnatural violet. Orion began to chant in an ancient, forgotten tongue, waving the smoke over my head and down my spine. Suddenly, the air in the room grew ice-cold. The violet smoke didn't dissipate; instead, it clung to my back, swirling around the base of my neck before congealing into a horrifying, visible shape. I gasped, my hands flying to my mouth as I looked in the vanity mirror across the room. There, rooted deep into the back of my neck, was a thick, spectral chain made of pulsing black sludge. It looked like a demonic umbilical cord, sinking its jagged, ethereal teeth directly into my spinal cord and extending outward, vanishing into the thin air toward the south—toward Silvermane territory. Kaelen let out a visceral, blood-curdling snarl, his arms tightening around me like a vice. He reached out to grab the black chain, but his hand passed right through the spectral sludge. "What is that?" I choked out, a wave of nausea washing over me. "The Siphon of the Eclipse," Orion whispered, his sightless eyes wide with horror as he beheld the dark magic. "It is a forbidden, parasitic blood-curse. The darkest of the black arts. This is why you never awakened your wolf, my Luna. This curse was placed upon you before your first shift. It acts as a dam, entirely sealing away your First Dawn pureblood healing, and funneling your life force directly into the anchor." "Silas," Kaelen hissed, the name dripping with absolute, murderous venom. "He is the anchor. He is using her as a battery." "Yes," Orion confirmed grimly. "But, my King... a curse of this magnitude, placed upon a pureblood of her caliber, cannot be cast by a sibling alone. It requires the absolute, willing consent of the victim's bloodline creators." The room fell dead silent. Only the crackle of the fireplace could be heard. I stopped breathing. The words hung in the air, a heavy, suffocating guillotine. "What are you saying?" I whispered, my voice trembling so violently it cracked. "I am saying, child," Orion said with profound pity, "that your brother did not do this alone. Your mother and father—the Alpha and Luna of Silvermane—had to willingly sacrifice your soul. They agreed to bind you, to suppress your wolf, and to let your brother feed on your vitality to ensure he became an unnaturally powerful heir. They didn't just look the other way when you became a slave. They explicitly designed your suffering to forge his crown." The revelation was a physical blow, striking me with the force of a battering ram. My parents. The people who had looked at me with cold disgust, who had locked me in the attic and permitted Silas to use a silver whip on my back... they hadn't just hated me for being a 'spare.' They knew. They had known my true worth all along, and they had cannibalized me for their golden boy. For nineteen years, I had cried myself to sleep, wondering why I was so unlovable. Wondering why the Goddess had made me broken. But I wasn't broken. I was stolen. I expected the familiar, crushing weight of despair to take over. I expected to cry. But as I stared at that black, parasitic chain feeding off my spine, the tears never came. Instead, a tiny, buried spark deep within the abyssal darkness of my soul finally ignited. It wasn't sorrow. It was rage. A pure, blinding, white-hot fury that tasted like copper and ozone. A low, vibrating hum began to radiate through the room. The glass in the windows rattled. Kaelen felt it. He looked down at me, his eyes widening as he felt the sudden, catastrophic spike in my internal temperature. His golden eyes flared with absolute pride, his wolf purring a deep, resonant rumble of approval against my back. "There she is," Kaelen murmured darkly, pressing a fierce kiss to my temple. "There is my Queen." "Break it," I demanded, my voice no longer a trembling whisper, but a cold, hard command that surprised even me. I looked at Orion through the mirror. "Cut it off. Now." "I cannot simply cut it, Luna," Orion warned, taking a cautious step back from the raw power suddenly bleeding from my small frame. "The tether is rooted in your very life force. If I sever it abruptly, the backlash will stop your heart. It must be broken naturally, by forcing your suppressed wolf to violently overpower the dam." "How?" Kaelen demanded, his tone leaving no room for failure. "The full moon," Orion answered grimly. "In three days. When the lunar pull is at its absolute peak, her pureblood vitality will swell. If she can endure the agony of a forced, delayed awakening, her wolf will shatter the curse from the inside out. But I must warn you... three years of suppressed pureblood energy detonating at once will be a torment unlike any other. It could tear her mind apart." I looked at the black chain in the mirror. In three days, Silas would be relying on my stolen strength for the pack's monthly Alpha trials. In three days, he would reach for my power and find a violently severed cord. I leaned back against Kaelen’s massive, impenetrable chest, feeling the terrifying, god-like strength of the Mad King wrapping around me. For the first time in my life, I wasn't prey. "Let it hurt," I said, my eyes locking onto my own reflection, glowing with a faint, unnatural silver light. "I want to feel it break. And then... I want them to burn."
