The opulent master suite was silent once more, though the heavy metallic scent of blood and shattered silver still hung thick in the air. Marcus and a silent, efficient team of Bloodmoon warriors had already cleared away the broken bodies of Silas’s elite Wraiths. They had worked quickly, their eyes strictly averted from where I sat on the edge of the massive bed, honoring their King’s absolute command to never let their gaze linger on his Queen. The shattered balcony doors let in a biting, freezing wind from the mountains, but I hardly felt the chill. My eyes were locked entirely on Kaelen. The Mad King stood near the hearth, his broad back to me. The feral, half-beast shift had receded entirely, leaving him in his devastatingly human form. Yet, the raw tension rolling off his massive frame was suffocating. His hands gripped the stone mantelpiece so tightly that the ancient rock was beginning to crack and crumble under his fingertips. He was taking deep, ragged breaths, clearly fighting a grueling internal battle to suppress the apocalyptic violence that had just possessed him. "Kaelen?" I whispered, my voice incredibly small in the cavernous room. He flinched. The absolute apex predator of the continent flinched at the sound of my voice. "I am fine, little wolf," he rumbled, though he did not turn around. His voice was strained, thick with a dark, heavy exhaustion. "I just need a moment to lock the beast away. I do not want to frighten you again." "You didn't frighten me," I said, and to my own shock, it was the absolute truth. I pushed the heavy velvet blankets aside and stood up. My bare feet padded softly against the marble floor as I crossed the room toward him. As I drew closer, the flickering light of the fireplace illuminated the side of his torso, and my breath caught sharply in my throat. Just beneath his ribs, a deep, jagged laceration marred his perfect, muscular flesh. It wasn't healing. In fact, it was actively festering, oozing a sluggish, pitch-black blood that smelled acutely of acidic silver and concentrated wolfsbane. During the chaotic, blindingly fast massacre, one of the Wraiths must have managed to graze him with a poisoned blade before Kaelen had crushed the life out of him. "You're bleeding," I gasped, my heart stuttering as I closed the final distance between us. Kaelen immediately tried to turn away, hiding the wound from my line of sight. "It is nothing, Elara. A scratch from a dead man's blade. The wolfsbane is potent, but my Alpha blood will burn it out by morning. Stay back. The poison on my skin will burn you." "No," I said, the single word carrying a sudden, foreign weight of authority. I didn't cower. I didn't retreat. The girl who had spent nineteen years shrinking into the shadows of the Silvermane dungeon was gone, burned away by the protective inferno of the Mad King's devotion. I stepped directly into his personal space. I reached out, my small, pale hands pressing flat against the hard, burning plains of his stomach. Kaelen froze instantly, his breath hitching audibly in his chest. His golden-crimson eyes darted down to me, wide with shock at my sudden boldness. "Elara, please," he groaned, a sound of pure, restrained agony. "I am toxic right now. Do not touch it." I ignored his warning. I looked down at the vicious, blackened wound. For my entire life, Silas had forcibly ripped my healing energy from my soul, stealing my vitality to fuel his own hollow vanity. It had always been a violation—a painful, terrifying theft. But this... this was a choice. Kaelen had shielded me with his own body. He had taken silver bolts into his back and poisonous blades to his ribs solely to ensure that Silas’s monsters could not lay a single finger on me. He bled because he was my fortress. A deep, primal instinct flared to life within my chest. It wasn't a conscious thought; it was the ancient, suppressed pureblood wolf stirring within the darkest depths of my soul, answering the desperate call of her mate. Slowly, I leaned in. "Elara—what are you—" Kaelen started, his voice a frantic, breathless rasp. I didn't give him a chance to pull away. I parted my lips and pressed my tongue directly against the center of the poisoned, festering wound. The reaction was catastrophic and beautiful. The moment my saliva—laced with the latent, miraculous essence of the First Dawn bloodline—made contact with his torn flesh, the world seemed to hold its breath. There was no pain, no acidic burn from the silver. Instead, a blinding, golden-white mist erupted from the point of contact. The room was instantly flooded with the overwhelming scent of rain-washed jasmine and cracking ozone. Beneath my lips, the black, necrotic blood instantly turned a vibrant crimson. The silver poisoning hissed and evaporated into nothingness. The jagged, gaping edges of his flesh aggressively knitted together, weaving new muscle and skin at a speed that defied reality. Within three seconds, the lethal wound was completely gone, leaving behind nothing but smooth, unblemished, burning-hot skin. I slowly pulled back, my lips slightly parted, my chest heaving as the golden mist dissipated into the air. Kaelen was as still as a statue carved from granite. He was staring down at me, his jaw slack, his chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow bursts. The golden rings in his eyes had completely consumed the crimson, glowing with a reverent, absolute awe that made my knees feel dangerously weak. "You healed me," he breathed, the words barely a whisper. "You did that... willingly." "You bled for me," I replied softly, my gaze locked with his. "I will never let you bleed alone. Not ever again." A violent shudder ripped through Kaelen’s massive frame. The last thread of his iron-clad restraint finally snapped. With a low, desperate growl, his hands flew to my face, his large palms cradling my cheeks with an intoxicating mix of absolute possession and profound worship. He didn't hesitate for another second. He crashed his lips down onto mine. The kiss was an explosion of sensory overload. It wasn't tentative or gentle; it was a consuming, desperate claiming that wiped my mind entirely blank. His mouth was scorching hot, demanding and yielding all at once. He tasted of dark power, fierce loyalty, and the intoxicating sweetness of a mate bond finally snapping perfectly into place. My hands automatically slid up his chest, tangling into the thick, dark hair at the nape of his neck as I kissed him back with everything I had. The tension, the horror of the assassins, the looming shadow of my brother—it all melted away, replaced by an overwhelming, dizzying rush of pure, unadulterated euphoria. Kaelen groaned into my mouth, the sound vibrating straight down my spine. He wrapped his massive arms around my waist, lifting me completely off the marble floor without breaking the kiss. I wrapped my legs instinctively around his hips, anchoring myself to him as he walked us backward, pressing my spine gently against the cool stone of the fireplace mantle. When he finally pulled back to breathe, we were both panting, our foreheads resting against each other. His golden eyes were dark, dilated, and blazing with an emotion so powerful it felt like a physical weight against my soul. He brushed his thumb across my swollen lower lip, his chest heaving against mine. "Do you have any idea what you do to me, little wolf?" Kaelen murmured, his voice a raw, jagged caress that sent a fresh wave of heat pooling in my stomach. "You own me. Every drop of blood in my veins, every breath in my lungs... it belongs entirely to you." For the first time in my life, I didn't feel small. Wrapped in the arms of the Mad King, fueled by the terrifying, beautiful power I had just discovered within myself, I felt invincible. "Then keep me," I whispered fiercely, pressing my lips to the pulse point on his throat. "Keep me safe, Kaelen. Because when my wolf wakes... I'm going to need you to stand beside me when we burn Silvermane to the ground."
