📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 18: The Kiss Before Trial
Nora found Darius in the old chapel.
The Council kept it locked most of the year--a relic from before packs built courts to replace altars. Moonlight bled through broken blue glass and pooled across the stone floor like cold water. The air smelled of dust and old incense.
Darius stood beneath the window, shirt open at the shoulder while a healer worked a curved needle through the wound the moonbane bolt had torn. The black edges of the burn still glistened. He did not flinch.
The healer did when Nora entered.
"Leave us," Darius said.
The woman set down the kit and fled, her footsteps echoing off the stone.
Nora pushed the heavy door shut. It groaned on iron hinges. "You accepted the duel."
"Blood arbitration cannot be refused without weakening sanctuary."
"That sounds like a yes dressed for court."
His mouth tightened. "Yes."
Nora crossed the chapel. Her boots scraped grit across the floor. "If Rowan wins, he can take me."
"He can petition."
"Darius."
He looked at her then. The control she had come to rely on had cracks in it, thin as spider silk. "I will not lose."
She wanted to believe him because believing was easier than fear. But she had lived too long inside promises men made when their pride was listening. Her hand drifted to her stomach without thinking.
"Rowan fights dirty."
"So do kings who survive."
"This isn't funny."
"I know."
Silence filled the chapel. The half-stitched wound on his shoulder wept a thin line of blood. Darius made no move to finish the work himself.
Nora stopped in front of him. Close enough to smell the copper of his blood and the pine of his soap. He had taken a poisoned bolt meant for Maeve. He had carried her through a riot. He had stood beside her in court and offered law without demanding love.
That was the dangerous part.
Not his power.
His restraint.
"Why are you doing this?" she asked.
"I told you."
"Tell me without law."
Darius's eyes dropped to her mouth. He held there for two full breaths, then forced them back to her eyes. The effort showed in the set of his jaw. "Because when the relic answered your child, every hungry Alpha in that chamber saw a crown. I saw you put one hand over your stomach and refuse to run. Because you looked at the men who tried to erase you and made them read their own crimes aloud. Because I have ruled winter for eleven years, and I have never wanted to kneel until you told a room full of wolves that consent mattered."
Nora forgot the answer she had prepared. Her throat closed.
Darius turned away first. He stared at the glass above them. "That is why."
Her heart beat too hard. "If you say things like that, I can't tell whether I'm safe because of your law or unsafe because of you."
"You're safe from me."
"I didn't ask to be safe from everything."
His breath changed. Sharp. Shallow.
Nora stepped closer. Her chest nearly touched the open stitches. "I'm not choosing you because Rowan forced a duel."
"Good."
"I'm not choosing anyone tonight."
"Better."
"But if you walk into that ring tomorrow thinking no one waits for you, you're wrong."
The last word had barely left her before he moved.
Slow. Deliberate. Close enough that she could have stepped back.
She didn't.
Nora met him halfway.
The kiss was not soft. It was controlled at first--his hand finding her waist with a grip that could bruise, his mouth cool from the chapel air. Then the control broke. His fingers curled into her shirt, and he made a low sound against her lips that he swallowed before it became a claim. She tasted old blood and new hunger.
Nora should have been afraid.
Instead she felt present in her own skin for the first time in years. Her hands found the back of his neck, the short hair at his nape, and she held on.
When she drew back, Darius did not chase. He lowered his forehead to hers and let her breathe.
"No bond," she whispered.
"No bond."
"No promise."
"No promise."
"Win anyway."
The edge of his mouth lifted. Dangerous. Brief. "That I can do."
The chapel bell rang once overhead.
A Council guard burst through the door, pale and breathless. His coat was crooked. His hand shook on the handle.
"My king," he said. "Alpha Vale changed the arbitration terms. He invoked old law."
Darius went still. The heat in his eyes cooled to something sharp and cold.
Nora's stomach turned.
The guard swallowed hard enough that his throat clicked.
"He named the unborn child as the prize of blood."
