📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 17: Second Mate Law
Second Mate Law was not romantic.
It was old, brutal, and written for widows whose packs tried to cage them after bad bonds. Nora read the statute at Darius's desk while dawn bled gray through the Council windows.
A rejected or endangered mate may accept higher sanctuary through a willing second bond, provided consent is spoken before neutral witnesses and no custody claim may interrupt bodily liberty.
Bodily liberty.
The phrase hurt more than poetry would have.
Rowan had petitioned for the child as if Nora were a box containing an heir. The law Darius offered named her body first.
"There is a hearing at noon," Darius said. "Rowan will argue that I am using you to weaken Blackridge."
"Are you?"
He did not pretend not to understand. "Yes."
Nora closed the statute.
Darius crossed the room until he stood opposite her, the desk between them like a treaty line. "I will not lie to make myself look softer. Blackridge is corrupt. Your child threatens its claim. Protecting you weakens Rowan. I want that."
"And me?"
"I want you alive when you decide what you want."
Nora wished he had said something easier to distrust.
The noon hearing drew more spectators than the audit. News of the crown-moon response had traveled through every corridor. Some Alphas watched Nora with reverence. Others with calculation. A few with open hunger.
Darius stood beside her, not touching her.
Rowan stood across the chamber with his shoulder bound and his pride more wounded than his body.
"Second Mate Law cannot apply," his lawyer argued. "Nora Ashford remains bound to Alpha Vale through conception. The Lycan King seeks possession."
Nora stepped forward. "I object to being discussed as if I were land."
Councilor Venn's mouth twitched. "Sustained."
Rowan's lawyer flushed.
Venn turned to Nora. "Do you understand the protection Darius Frost offers?"
"Yes."
"Do you understand that accepting sanctuary under a second mate provision does not require intimacy, marriage, or surrender of property?"
Nora glanced at Rowan. "Please repeat that louder."
The chamber stirred.
Venn repeated it.
Rowan's eyes burned.
"Do you consent freely?"
Nora felt every gaze. Iris's hate. Rowan's fury. Callum's panic. Darius's stillness.
She had been claimed without being asked at sixteen by a moon bond everyone told her was fate. She had been renamed, moved, used, praised when useful, blamed when barren, and discarded when inconvenient.
Now the room waited for her word.
"I consent to Frost sanctuary," she said. "I do not consent to ownership by any man."
Darius bowed his head, not to Venn.
To her.
Venn lifted the silver statute rod. "The Council recognizes Nora Ashford under temporary Second Mate protection until custody and succession review conclude."
The chamber exploded.
Rowan slammed a fist on the table. "She is carrying my blood."
Darius finally turned to him. "And standing under my law."
Rowan's wolf surged so violently his eyes went gold. Guards stepped forward. For a second, Nora thought he would attack in open court.
Instead, he smiled.
"Then I challenge the Lycan King to blood arbitration."
The chamber fell silent.
Darius's expression did not change, but Nora felt the air around him sharpen.
Venn stood. "Alpha Vale, think carefully."
"I have." Rowan's gaze slid to Nora's stomach. "If he wants my heir behind his walls, let him bleed for it."
Nora turned to Darius. "What is blood arbitration?"
Darius did not look away from Rowan.
"A lawful duel," he said. "And if I lose, Rowan can petition to remove you from Frost protection by sunrise."
