The Council refused Rowan's prize. For ten minutes, Nora thought law had won. Councilor Venn stood in the arbitration hall with the old law book open and declared that no unborn child could be named as property in a blood challenge. The words were clear. The witnesses heard them. Even Rowan's lawyer lowered his eyes. Then the southern creditor arrived. He wore no pack colors. His coat was black wool, his gloves black leather, his hair pale as bone. Behind him came six men with hunter scars and silver hooks at their belts. The chamber recognized him before Nora did. Darius did not move, but the guards around him shifted. "Cassian Vale," Venn said. Nora looked at Rowan. Rowan's face had gone rigid. The stranger smiled. "Not Vale anymore. House Thornveil adopted my contract." The name turned the room colder. House Thornveil. The buyer on the omega contracts. The mark on the moonbane vial. The people who tried to kill Darius's mother. Cassian placed a folded document on the Council table. "Blackridge owes a blood debt. Alpha Rowan pledged any crown-line heir produced under his rule as collateral." Nora heard a roaring in her ears. Rowan said, "That clause was never meant to activate." "Debts rarely are." Cassian's smile sharpened. "Then the relic lit up." Darius stepped forward. "You will not stand in this hall and discuss Nora's child as currency." Cassian bowed. "Your Majesty. Still pretending law protects what power wants?" The two men looked at each other with history between them. Nora forced herself to read the document from where she stood. Rowan's signature. Elder Callum's seal. A collateral clause in old legal script. "You sold a child you did not know existed," she said to Rowan. For once, Rowan had no answer. The humiliation of that silence was not enough. Nora wanted the room to open and swallow him. She wanted every person who had clapped when he called Iris Luna to see the price tag he had placed on a baby. Cassian looked at her with interest. "The mother speaks well. Thornveil appreciates strong vessels." Darius's wolf hit the room. Not a shift. Not fully. But every lamp flickered and every wolf present lowered their head by instinct. Cassian did not. "Careful," he said. "Kill me and the debt transfers to the hunters outside your gates." A messenger burst through the doors before anyone could answer. "Frosthold's outer road is blocked," he said. "Rogue hunters at the snow gate." Venn rose. "How many?" "Thirty. Maybe more." Nora thought of Maeve in the infirmary. Of the servants in the west wing. Of every omega whose name glowed in the rescued contracts. Cassian closed his gloves around his cane. "We came to collect." Darius looked at Nora. The question was not whether he would fight. It was whether she would be hidden. Nora placed both hands on the table and pushed herself to standing before any man could decide. "Then record this," she said to Venn. "Blackridge debt was built on stolen sanctuary funds, poisoned heats, forged Luna marks, and omega labor contracts. No lawful debt can be collected from an unlawful crime." Cassian smiled wider. "Tell that to the hunters." Outside, the first alarm bell rang. Darius drew his blade. Rowan reached for Nora's arm as panic broke the room. She slapped him so hard the crack silenced the nearest clerks. "Do not touch what you sold." The second bell rang. From the northern windows, smoke began to rise over the snow gate.
