Parcel Ledger at Newsroom 029

The Marshport Ledger annex had already moved the East Parcel Van box before Mira reached the public shelf. A gray cart stood where the orange intake crate had been during Parcel Thirteen, and a new tag hung from the empty slot: PRESS PROPERTY REVIEW. DO NOT RELEASE WITHOUT MANAGEMENT COUNTERSIGN. Noah stopped so hard that Tessa nearly walked into him. "That is not an archive status," he said. "That is Daria putting my old floor between us and the box." Sienna kept the red keycard, Blue Receipt, tenant-copy strip, and Room 417 seal folded against her chest under one hand. The damp Route Authorization Record Twenty-Nine lay inside Mira's clear sleeve, its bottom line dark enough for the annex camera to read. Jalen stood half a step behind Tessa, palms visible, jaw tight. "Pike's men are across the street," he said. "White van. No tools out yet." Noah lifted his phone waist high. "Local recording. No Ledger system. My login is still dead." Daria Vale came through the interior glass door before the desk clerk could speak. She had a folder tucked under one arm and Rusk beside her, his coat dry despite the rain. "Noah, you are not staff, and you are not using this annex as a personal evidence room." Her eyes moved to Mira. "Ms. Arden, anything in that box touched newsroom reporting channels. Press work product is not your tribunal drawer." Mira slid Vale's production command, the route-board card, and the Blue Receipt copy onto the counter without releasing the originals from Sienna's hand. "I am not asking for notes. I am asking for the parcel route authorization copied into a live hotel property hold." The clerk looked down at the card, then at Daria. The counter terminal woke by itself, blue cursor blinking in a field labeled EAST PARCEL VAN. Daria's mouth tightened. Rusk said, "Do not touch that field." Sienna stepped close enough that the camera over the desk could see the Room 417 seal. "My room is frozen pending this field." Her phone buzzed as if the building had heard her. HOLD REVIEW TIMER RESUMED: 09:00. 08:59. Holt's name sat under the countdown like a signature. Sienna did not flinch. "If you call it press property, you are saying a newspaper can move my belongings." Noah tried the public terminal anyway. His old badge number failed before he finished typing; the screen printed ACCESS DISABLED / MANAGEMENT REVIEW. Daria did not hide her relief. "There. The system will not process a terminated user's request." Noah's face went flat, but he backed away from the keyboard and turned his phone toward the failed screen. "Then process the paper chain," he said. "You cannot make my disabled login the reason a live Room 417 timer moves." Rusk set a hand on the gray cart. "The East Parcel Van materials include donor communications and confidential source routing." Jalen moved with him, not touching the cart, only placing himself where Rusk would have to shoulder past him. "I watched Pike cover the route board," Jalen said. "I watched the strip print this annex field. If the box leaves now, it leaves after you heard that." Tessa raised her own phone, screen dark, mirror-bright. "And after you saw Sienna's hold timer." Daria turned on Tessa. "Ms. Noll, you were warned about contamination exposure." Tessa's hand shook once, then steadied. "I was warned because I saw the East Parcel Van." She looked at the clerk, not Daria. "White side panel, blue orchard stencil behind the mud, rear latch tied with red thread. I gave that statement before Noah lost access. Put my statement beside the route card." The clerk swallowed. "Management has to countersign." Mira pointed to the blue cursor. "The annex terminal already recognized the field. Countersign refusal, if that is your answer." The word refusal changed the clerk's posture. He pulled a paper log from under the counter, the old kind with carbon sheets and numbered stubs. Daria said his name sharply. He did not look up. "If the field is live-property related, we cannot use internal review only." Holt's countdown on Sienna's phone dropped to 07:12. Then a second notice overlaid it: ROOM 417 HOLD CONVERSION MAY PROCEED UPON NEWSROOM ROUTE NONPRODUCTION. Sienna set the phone flat on the counter beside the Blue Receipt, still keeping her fingers on the card and seal. "Nonproduction means you help them move me." The clerk's pen hovered above the log. "I need the route authorization number." Mira read it from the damp card. "RA-29. Copied from Route Board Twenty-Eight. Field: East Parcel Van / D. Voss relay / Room 417 hold conversion." The counter terminal made a small grinding sound. Under the blue cursor, a receipt printer embedded in the desk started moving though nobody had touched the keyboard. Daria reached for the paper. Sienna was faster. She pinned the strip to the counter with the red keycard, exactly as she had pinned the cover strip at the shelter. "Do not use my room to teach your desk what it can erase," Sienna said. The printer kept feeding under her hand. Rusk leaned close enough for Noah's phone to catch his sleeve. "That paper belongs to the Ledger." Mira put her badge case between his hand and Sienna's knuckles. "Then object to the route authorization in front of the timer." The first line emerged: PARCEL LEDGER TWENTY-NINE / ROUTE AUTHORIZATION MATCH. The clerk read because Daria would not. "East Parcel Van accepted under newsroom annex intake, post-disaster route family BO-TR-117-C." The second line printed slower. "Relay entry: D. Voss. Local handler: M. Holt desk conversion request. Counsel listener: Rusk station." Daria whispered, "No." The strip gave another jerk. "Live property affected: Room 417. Conversion source copied from annex parcel route nonproduction rule." Noah's jaw worked. "You built a room hold out of a newspaper parcel rule." Daria looked at him then, and for the first time anger did not cover fear. "It was supposed to hold cargo until verification." Mira heard the admission under the correction. "Cargo does not have a hotel room." Sienna's voice was quiet enough that the clerk leaned toward her. "Cargo does not have a brother." Pike entered through the rain door with two men in Calder jackets. "Management requested removal of donor property." Jalen widened his stance, hands still open. "The cart is on camera." Pike smiled at him. "So is obstruction." Tessa stepped beside Jalen before he could answer. "Then film both of us saying we are not touching it." She turned to the clerk. "Open the box here." Daria said, "Absolutely not." The terminal answered with a hard beep. The gray cart's side latch clicked, and a red light above the handle turned blue. The clerk stared at it. "Annex route lock released by live-property conflict." Pike lunged for the latch. Sienna lifted the printed strip and pressed the red keycard over the latch plate. "My property conflict," she said. "My hand first." Mira helped her lift the lid only far enough for the camera to see inside. The box held an old van route envelope, two carbon sheets, and a city archive pull slip clipped with a faded hospital band. Noah did not reach in. He read from where he stood. "Medical effects routing. C-7B companion tag." Mira saw the next line and felt the chapter turn colder. The pull slip was not under Theo's name. It was under the same object field that had kept him alive in the records. The printer coughed once more and released a final narrow strip. Sienna took it before anyone else moved. "Read it," she said, handing it to Mira only after the camera caught her handoff. Mira read the bottom line into the annex silence: CITY HALL ARCHIVE THIRTY. MEDICAL TAG FIELD C-7B-ROOM417. PRODUCE COMPANION TAG AND HOLD-CONVERSION SOURCE BEFORE NEXT PROPERTY TIMER CAN RUN.
