Storm Map at Ruined Shelter 028

The ruined shelter board had been covered before Mira reached it. A new white strip ran across the service-bay corner of the storm map, too clean for the smoke-black wall and too dry for the rain coming through the broken roof. Someone had pasted it over the blue route line between the old hotel loading door and Harbor North's west ambulance gate, and the strip still lifted at one corner where the glue had not set. Sienna stopped at the threshold with the red keycard under two fingers and the tenant-copy strip pinched beside the Blue Receipt. "They got here first." Her voice did not shake, but Mira saw the cost in how carefully she kept the Room 417 seal slip inside her sleeve. Tessa moved to the left where the cracked security mirror could catch her coat and Jalen's hands. Noah stayed outside the puddle line and raised his phone only waist high. "Local copy running. No Ledger login. Time stamp on wall clock and my watch." Pike came out from behind the fallen cubby shelves with a flat scraper in one hand. "This board is condemned debris." Behind him, a Calder maintenance man held a roll of replacement decals against his chest. The top decal showed a harmless fire-exit arrow, bright enough to look like a lie. Rusk's voice came from a speaker on Pike's phone. "Any route-board material predating tenant verification is not responsive to a hotel desk challenge." Mira opened Vale's production command and held it beside the tenant-copy strip. "The hotel reader required route-board enforcement comparison. You are standing in front of the comparison." Pike put the scraper against the fresh strip. Jalen stepped forward, then stopped himself with both palms open at shoulder height. "I am not touching it." Tessa matched him, shoulder to shoulder. "We are witnesses to removal." Pike smiled without looking at her. "You are both contamination risks." Sienna crossed the room before Mira could tell her to wait. She did not hand over the keycard. She pressed the tenant-copy strip against the glass over the board and kept her thumb on it. "Then remove it around me while the camera sees my room number." The maintenance man shifted. "Pike, that is her active property seal." Pike said, "It is a lodging issue." Mira pointed to the blue line disappearing under the strip. "No. It is BO-TR-117-C. Same rail hold. Same D. Voss relay. Same Room 417 release path." Rusk's speaker crackled. "Counsel objects to narrative stacking." Noah said, "Counsel is objecting through the same phone that watched the hotel reader print his listener field." For one breath, nobody moved except the rain dripping through the roof and tapping the decal roll. Holt's notice arrived on Sienna's phone with a hard buzz. The preview lit her screen: NONCOOPERATIVE-SEAL NOTICE. VOLUNTARY RELEASE FAILURE. PROPERTY TO MOVE AT 14:00. Sienna looked at it, then turned the phone outward so the cracked mirror could catch the text. "You sent the move notice while I was looking at the map." Mira felt the room change. The notice was pressure, but it was also timing. "Noah, get the phone screen with the board." "Local only," he said. "Got it." Pike dug the scraper under the new strip. Sienna caught the loose corner with the edge of the red keycard and pinned it to the glass. "Do not make my key the tool you use to erase my room." Pike's hand hovered close enough that his knuckle almost touched hers. Jalen's voice came low and rough. "Back up." Pike turned on him instantly. "There it is." Tessa lifted the blank face of her phone again, using it as a mirror instead of a recorder. "He said back up because your hand is over hers." The maintenance man's eyes went to the mirror, then to the old camera dome above the west door. Mira used that hesitation. She slid Vale's command into the board's rusted side clip, exactly where the old fire-warden cards had once sat. The clip resisted, then bit down. The glass gave a dull click. A narrow service panel below the map, hidden by soot, woke with a blue line so faint she almost missed it. The covered strip warmed and printed letters from behind, black rising through white paper like a bruise. "Do not read that as an admission," Rusk snapped from the phone. Mira read anyway. "Route Board Twenty-Eight. Service-bay release comparison. Room 417 property seal. Enforcement source: M. Holt desk authorization. Counsel listener: Rusk station. Relay family: D. Voss." The white strip continued darkening. Sienna did not breathe until the last field appeared. "Release path owner?" Mira said. The board answered with a second line, smaller and worse. RELEASE AUTHORIZATION COPIED FROM NEWSROOM PARCEL ROUTE LOG. MARSHPORT LEDGER ANNEX. FIELD: EAST PARCEL VAN / D. VOSS RELAY / ROOM 417 HOLD CONVERSION. Pike tore the scraper away as if the tool had burned him. "That is old ink bleeding through." The maintenance man whispered, "Fresh strip would not know the annex field." Rusk said, "Remove the phone from speaker." Sienna laughed once, not because it was funny. "You used a newsroom parcel route to move a living room." Holt's notice buzzed again, this time with a countdown banner. PROPERTY TRANSFER WINDOW CONFIRMED. 13:59. 13:58. Mira stepped between Sienna and Pike. "If that timer reaches move status while this board is active, it ties Holt's notice to the parcel route log." Pike grabbed for his phone. Noah shifted just enough to keep both the countdown and the board in frame. "Still local." Tessa looked at the maintenance man. "You can witness clean removal, or you can witness why it was covered." The man swallowed, then set the decal roll on the floor away from his shoes. "Board panel is active," he said, loud enough for the mirror and the phone. "No removal while active." Pike lunged toward him, and Jalen moved only one step, placing his body between Pike and the decal roll without raising his hands. "I am not touching evidence," Jalen said. "I am standing where he cannot pretend he was alone." The old board clicked again. A receipt slit opened under the service panel and coughed out a damp, narrow card. Sienna reached before Pike could. She trapped it under the red keycard, slid both back to her palm, and held them against her chest with the Blue Receipt and the seal slip still visible. Mira saw the printed header before Sienna folded it: ROUTE AUTHORIZATION RECORD TWENTY-NINE. Rusk's speaker went dead. Holt's countdown froze at 13:41, then changed to HOLD PENDING PARCEL ROUTE AUTHORIZATION. The ruined shelter seemed to inhale around them. Mira took the card only after Sienna nodded. The bottom line named the next door with no room for Calder to soften it into debris: MARSHPORT LEDGER NEWSROOM ANNEX. PARCEL LEDGER TWENTY-NINE MUST PRODUCE EAST PARCEL VAN ROUTE AUTHORIZATION BEFORE ROOM 417 CAN MOVE.
