Renee spread Tyler’s financial files across her dining table, the papers forming a chaotic mosaic of numbers, dates, and quiet red flags. The apartment was still—too still—after the hotel room and that terrifying glimpse of the man in her bedroom. She needed something normal to ground her. Analyzing spreadsheets was the closest she could get. She clicked through the PDFs Tyler had sent, each one more unsettling than the last. “How long has this been going on…” she murmured, highlighting another suspicious transfer. Her phone buzzed. She barely glanced at it—until she saw the caller ID. Mom & Dad. Renee froze. Her parents never called. Not in the morning. Not on a weekday. Not together. A pit opened in her stomach. She answered slowly. “Hello?” “Sweetheart?” her mother’s voice was too soft. Too shaky. “Are you somewhere you can talk?” Renee’s hand tightened on the phone. “Uh… yeah. I’m home. What’s wrong?” A stretch of silence followed—thin, trembling, unnatural. Then her father cleared his throat. “Renee, we didn’t want to worry you, but… something happened.” Her pulse jumped. “What do you mean ‘something happened’? Where are you? Are you both okay?” “We’re fine,” her mother insisted too quickly. “It’s just… someone came asking about you.” Renee’s blood went cold. “Asked about me?” she repeated, her voice barely a whisper. “Who?” “We don’t know,” her father said. “A man. Well-dressed. Polite, but… strange. He said he had business with you.” Her heart slammed against her ribs. “Did he say his name?” Renee breathed. “No,” her mother said. “But, sweetheart… he knew yours. And he knew where you lived.” A shiver tore down Renee’s spine so violently she had to grip the table to stay upright. Because she already knew who it was. Because he’d been in her bedroom last night. Because the thing he took—the thing Tyler didn’t even know existed—was something people would kill to get their hands on. Renee squeezed her eyes shut, pulse thrashing. “Mom,” she whispered, “lock the doors. Don’t open them for anyone. And please—please don’t tell anyone else where I am.” “Renee—” “Please.” Her father’s voice dropped, stern and protective. “You’re scaring us. Tell us what’s happening.” She swallowed hard. How did she explain something she barely understood herself? “I can’t yet,” she said, voice cracking. “But I swear I’ll call soon. I just… need to keep you safe.” Another silence. Heavy. Loaded. Then her mother exhaled shakily. “Okay. We trust you.” The call ended. Renee stood there, phone in hand, surrounded by Tyler’s files—corruption, missing money, lies—and realized with a cold, crushing certainty: Whatever she had gotten herself into… it had just reached her family. And she wasn’t sure she could protect them. Or herself.
