The hotel room was too quiet. Too clean. Too still. Like the air itself was waiting to snap. Renee sat on the edge of the bed, fingers twisted together so tightly her knuckles were white. Tyler stood beside the small round table where his laptop was open, four surveillance feeds glowing in cold, sterile blue. Living room. Kitchen. Hallway. Bedroom. All of them empty—until they weren’t. Tyler’s voice was low. Controlled. “Renee… look.” She didn’t want to. But she did. On the bedroom camera, the door creaked open. A silhouette slipped inside. Tall. Confident. Familiar enough to make her stomach crash to the floor. Her breath hitched. “No. No, no, no—what is he doing there?” Tyler reached out without looking away from the screen, steadying her wrist with a warm, grounding grip. “Stay with me. Don’t panic.” But she was panicking. Because the man moved through her bedroom like he owned it—hands in his pockets, head tilted, scanning every corner. He paused by her dresser. Her jewelry box. The photo frame she never let anyone touch. Renee’s pulse hammered so violently she thought she might black out. “Why is he in my room?” she whispered. “Tyler—why my room?” Tyler didn’t answer right away. His jaw tightened, eyes narrowing as he zoomed the camera in. “He’s searching for something.” “Searching for what?” “I don’t know,” he said. “But he knows exactly where to look.” As if on cue, the man knelt beside the bed. Lifted the edge of the frame. Reached underneath. Renee’s heart plummeted. Because that was where she hid things—little things, important things, things no one else should ever know existed. Her breath came out shaky. “He—he can’t find it. Tyler, he can’t—” “Renee.” Tyler stepped in front of her, blocking her view of the screen. His hands cupped her shoulders, grounding her. Forcing her to breathe. “Look at me.” But she couldn’t. Her vision blurred. “Look at me,” he said again, softer this time. She lifted her eyes. Tyler’s voice dropped to a low, dangerous calm. “You’re not alone in this. Whatever he finds—or doesn’t find—I’m right here. We handle it together.” The words shouldn’t have meant so much. But they did. God, they did. A sudden beep from the laptop sliced through the moment. They both whipped around. On the bedroom feed, the man straightened—holding something small between his fingers. Tyler froze. Renee’s blood turned to ice. Because even from the grainy footage, she knew exactly what it was. And if he had it… Everything she’d kept buried was about to detonate.
