Tyler’s office was too bright for the kind of news he was about to drop. Morning sunlight slashed across the glass desk, catching the silver rims of his glasses as he typed—fast, focused, and with a tension Renee had learned to read like a second language. Something was wrong. Very wrong. “Sit,” he said without looking up. Renee did, her pulse still unsettled from her parents’ call the night before. Tyler finally turned the monitor toward her. A folder blinked on the screen, labeled: “B-Series Prospects — V.W.” Her stomach knotted. “What is this?” Tyler leaned back, crossing his arms—classic this is going to ruin your morning posture. “It’s Victor,” he said. “He’s been reaching out to investors. Quietly.” Renee blinked. “Investors? For what?” “B-round funding,” Tyler said. “A big one.” Her breath caught. “That’s impossible. He told me he wasn’t raising anytime soon. That the company needed stability first.” Tyler gave her a look so sharp she felt personally attacked by it. “You really believe Victor would delay anything that benefits him?” She opened her mouth—then shut it again. No. She didn’t. And that realization burned. Tyler clicked the folder open. Emails. Pitch decks. Draft NDAs. Investor call notes. All dated over the past three months. Three months in which Victor had sworn he was “under too much pressure to think about expansion.” Three months in which he’d told her she wouldn’t understand “the business side.” Three months in which she’d given him the benefit of the doubt. “This… doesn’t make sense,” Renee whispered, scrolling through the documents with increasing dread. “Why hide this? Investors aren’t a crime.” Tyler’s jaw clenched. “Look at the potential dilution percentages.” She clicked another file. Her breath stopped. “Tyler…” she whispered, voice cracking. “I know.” “He’s… selling more than equity. He’s selling control.” “Yep.” “He’s planning to cut me out.” Tyler didn’t sugarcoat it. “He’s planning to cut everyone out.” Renee felt the world tilt, her fingers trembling as she gripped the edge of the desk. Victor wasn’t just hiding investments. He was preparing an escape route. A takeover. A betrayal wrapped in legal paperwork and false promises. And he’d been doing it while sleeping in her bed, kissing her forehead, telling her, “You worry too much, babe.” Renee squeezed her eyes shut. “This is the line, isn’t it?” she whispered. “The one he’s been crossing slowly for months… and I refused to see it.” Tyler didn’t say yes. He didn’t have to. He simply slid a USB drive across the desk. “This is everything,” he said quietly. “Every file, every email, every trace he left behind. If you’re going to confront him… you’ll need it.” Renee stared at the drive, her heartbeat echoing like a countdown. Her relationship wasn’t just cracking. It was collapsing. And Victor had already started planning a future— one she was never meant to be part of.
