Chapter 063: Aunt Liora Opens Her Cabinet Liora's old key rose through the two-inch service gap teeth-first, dull with age and dark at the ring. The tag tied to it was cracked brass, one punched corner, no clinic logo. Northstar's evidence phone printed the same cold line again: lower reserve cabinet source disputed. Aven Pell stared as if someone had passed him a bone from a room he had signed clean. Elise's white cylinder breathed softly beside the bed, but her mask clicked when Vale bent toward the grate. Keth caught the tube slack. "No one leans below the frame," Mira said. "Officer, record the key above the grate only." The officer lowered the microphone until it caught Liora's breath without showing below. Mara shifted her camera; Oren braced her elbow so the lens held the old key, public plug, white cylinder tag, Elise's mask, and the service gap. Beneath it, three protected palms appeared: Ari's White Frame, Nima's Side Step, and a smaller hand with every finger spread. Whole Hand. No faces, no lower wall, no route. The fourth hidden support light stayed white, thin as a match flame. "Visible hands only," Mira said. "No names from below." "A cabinet is a location," Vale said. "If this source predates the clinic system, I need safety access." The old key twitched. The white cylinder tag flashed amber at access, and Elise's mask answered with two dry clicks. Keth lifted the shortened tube loop. "Access changed the line." Mira did not look away from Vale. "Ask for behavior, not entry." Aven's tablet woke: reserve source verification requires cabinet chain of custody. He looked at Mira, then at the officer holding his clinic keys. "If I do not verify chain, the system will keep disputing the cylinder." "Then verify what can be seen from public care," Mira said. "No location. No inventory. No recipient group." She turned toward the grate. "Aunt Liora, only the old key and latch sound. Nothing else." Liora scraped the key once along metal. A rough cabinet latch barked below, and dust sifted upward through the gap. The fourth light did not turn blue. The public plug stayed white. Aven's tablet changed before he touched it: non-clinic latch detected. Legacy cabinet response possible. The donor guardian stepped around Clay's shoulder, palms up, gentle as a sermon. "If there is an old reserve supply, my foundation can secure it so no child suffers from poor storage." Clay moved only his feet, body between sleeve and tablet. "You can stand where your money cannot reach." The donor stopped. The old key rang below; a muted clank followed, metal against cylinder. Elise's mask softened for one breath, then clicked when the donor whispered, "secure." The white tag showed a hairline gray rim. "Donation language changed the tag," the officer said, voice like a man counting a pulse. Mira pointed to the gray rim. "Old cabinet is not a funding request." Aven swallowed. "Northstar is asking for source." "Northstar is asking for a map." Mira crouched outside the service line. "Aunt Liora, if there is an old tag, show only its face. No shelf, no count, no room." For three seconds nothing moved. Then a second tag appeared under Liora's thumb: a faded white disk with a hand-stamped crescent and the number rubbed almost away. Aven made a sound he could not hide. "That mark is older than the Cedar clinic tags." His tablet printed: legacy reserve candidate. Attach patient continuity? The fourth light thinned. Whole Hand's fingers curled, then spread under Nima's touch. Mira snapped her fingers once. "No patient continuity. Say what you can see." Aven forced his eyes off the prompt. "Old white disk. No clinic logo. No printed patient name. Hand-stamped crescent. Oxidized rim. It predates the cart system." The tablet hesitated. Elise's mask stopped clicking. The gray rim faded halfway back to white. Vale's jaw tightened. "If it predates the clinic, it may be evidence of an unauthorized ward below this ward." At below, all three palms stilled. The fourth light shivered blue. Liora's key vanished. Elise's tube pulled against Keth's finger. Mira stood fast enough to clip Mara's camera frame. "Strike 'ward below' from the question." "Counselor." "You named a place the system could seize." She turned to the officer. "Location phrase spoken, lower hands froze, fourth light blue, patient tube tightened, key withdrawn." The officer repeated it. Vale looked at the gap and corrected himself. "Bounded lower-side care layer. No location requested." The key came back. So did Liora's hand, shaking harder now. Aven held his tablet flat where the camera could see it and spoke carefully. "Bounded lower-side care layer, visible evidence only. Legacy reserve source. No route, no shelf count, no recipient list." The tablet stripped out patient continuity and printed a smaller field: public witness chain. Mira looked at the officer, then at Mara's camera, then at Keth's hand on the tube. "We have officer microphone, family camera, visible tag face, old key, public plug, patient mask, lower protected hands, and no location." Nima whispered from below, "And no door." "And no door," Mira said. Liora turned the key in the unseen lock. The latch did not open fully. It gave one inch, then stopped with a child-height catch. A small strip of paper slid through the gap instead of a cabinet door. It was brittle, water-spotted, and marked with four candle dots along the edge. Mara caught it on camera before anyone touched it. Aven read without reaching. "Candle roll." His face changed. "This is not inventory. It is a rotation note." Northstar's phone replied at once: candle roll may identify protected recipients. The fourth light darkened. Mira held up one hand. "No reading names. Only behavior marks." She pointed to the four dots. "White Frame?" Ari tapped once. The first dot warmed. "Side Step?" Nima tapped twice. The second dot warmed. "Whole Hand?" The small palm pressed flat, and the third dot warmed without a voice. The fourth dot stayed cold. Elise's mask clicked once, confused by the missing answer. Liora's key scraped below, frantic. Keth bent over Elise. "Easy. We do not buy the fourth dot with a name." The mayor's aide, pale now, said, "Public emergency support for visible care behavior only. No recipient list. No hidden location. No donor funding. No court seizure. No cabinet inventory." The cold fourth dot warmed by one shade, not enough to light. Aven looked at the old disk tag in Liora's hand. "The cabinet wants the same public conditions as the cylinder." Mira nodded. "Then keep them." He set his tablet on the bed rail, screen up, and moved both hands away. "Legacy reserve verified by visible behavior, age mismatch, no-logo key, non-clinic latch, candle-roll response, public witness chain, and patient-mask effect. No continuity attachment." For a breath nothing happened. Then the old disk tag below the gap turned plain white. The front cylinder beside Elise answered with a clean valve tick, deeper than before, and Keth's loop of tubing slackened until it lay across his wrist instead of cutting his fingers. The fourth hidden support light came back white. Whole Hand's small fingers spread wider, not in surrender, but in proof. The officer spoke over the sound of the mask easing. "Legacy reserve verified without source map, patient list, donor funding, court seizure, group, or hidden endpoint. Public plug white. Patient tube slackened. Fourth lower light white." Northstar's phone did not accept losing. The screen wiped itself and printed a new prompt: lower care layer requires ward classification. Vale saw it before Mira covered the bag with her palm. A second sound rose from below, not a key and not a latch. It was wheels, very small, rolling behind the unseen cabinet. Aven's tablet recognized the sound and went still. "That is not a cabinet shelf," he said. Mira kept her palm over the phone and her eyes on the narrow gap. "No one names it yet." Below them, Liora knocked once for White Frame, twice for Side Step, three times for Whole Hand, and then four slow knocks from somewhere deeper answered her.
