Clinic Oxygen Strike
Chapter 062: Clinic Oxygen Strike
Every spare oxygen cylinder tag on the Cedar clinic cart turned gray at once. Aven Pell had already reached for the nearest green tag when the color bled out under his thumb, and the cart lock clicked shut around six valves. Elise's mask answered with one dry click, then another, and Keth's hand slid under the tube before the sound finished. "No one moves the cart off camera," Mira said. Mara dropped to one knee while Oren braced the camera against the wet baseboard, catching the gray tags, the white public plug in the hall outlet, Elise's pale ceiling crescent, and the two-inch service gap in one frame. The officer leaned in. "Clinic oxygen tags gray. Cart lock engaged. Public plug remains white. Patient mask clicked twice. Fourth lower light is white and dim."
Aven's tablet woke in his other hand: CEDAR CLINIC OXYGEN STRIKE INITIATED. Release available under clinic continuity conditions. Vale stepped toward the cart. "Doctor, unlock what she needs." Aven showed the brass keys and white Cedar fob at his belt. When he pressed the fob to the cart, the lock stayed red, and the tablet added: patient identity confirmation required for oxygen continuity. Elise's crescent widened above the bed. Under the service frame, the fourth hidden support light flickered toward blue. "No names," Nima said from the lower grate. Ari pressed her hand flat against the upper frame. "No hidden place." Liora's knuckles knocked twice below them, then stopped.
Aven looked at Mira with anger under the fear. "If I cannot attach the cylinder to a patient file, the clinic system will not release it." Mira angled the microphone toward him. "Then say that." He swallowed. "Oxygen release is tied to the patient file." The officer repeated it. Clay shifted without touching the donor guardian, making his shoulder a wall between the man's sleeve and Aven's tablet. "Body boundary only."
The donor guardian smiled as if Clay had opened a polite door. "My foundation can buy the cylinders outright. No burden on the city. No delay for the child." The gray tags pulsed once, almost silver. Northstar's phone, still evidence-bagged on the tile, answered: donor-funded oxygen continuity may bypass strike hold if recipient signal accepted. Elise's mask clicked again. Keth folded the tube through his fingers and made a loop of slack. "Elise, listen to me. The tube is yours. The price is not." Aven said, "I am not debating ownership while her flow drops."
"Then test behavior." Mira pointed to the first cylinder. "Public care. No file, no donor, no rank, no mark attachment. Beside the bed but outside the threshold." Aven's fob touched the lock. Red. He entered a code. Red. He held the key to the manual slot and stopped when the tablet flashed: emergency manual release requires recipient continuity agreement. The donor guardian leaned an inch around Clay. "Agreement can be made by a guardian." Clay did not look back. "You are still behind my shoulder." Mira crouched so the camera could see her hand stay off the cart. "Officer, record that he moved closer when the tablet asked for agreement." The officer said, "Donor hand visible behind Clay's right shoulder. Cart lock still red. Cylinder tags gray."
Vale's voice hardened. "Emergency medical necessity is not custody. I can certify release." The tablet turned amber before his sentence ended: Court-certified clinic continuity available. Attach temporary medical authority? The fourth light thinned. Ari's fingers curled until Nima caught her wrist before the palm left the frame. "Marker stays visible," Nima whispered. Mira looked at Vale. "Your certification changed the light." "It offered oxygen." "It offered authority."
Aven swore under his breath and used the brass key. The lock cracked open one finger width. Elise took a shallow breath, and for one heartbeat the hall thought mercy had finally behaved like mercy. Then the gray tag on the front cylinder printed a black stripe through its middle: released under temporary clinic authority. The public plug ring in the hall went from white to a bruised yellow. Keth's tube loop tightened in his palm. The officer repeated, slower now, "Manual release opened one finger. Tag printed temporary clinic authority. Public plug changed from white to yellow. Patient tube tightened. Fourth lower light is blue."
"Close it," Mira said. Aven stared at her. "She needs oxygen." Mira kept her eyes on the tightening tube. "She needs air that does not buy a child." "That is not a medical sentence." Keth did not look away from Elise's mask. "It is when the line tightens." Aven shut the manual slot. The lock reclosed. Elise's next breath scratched. Keth bent lower, his shoulder almost covering her face from the hall. "I have slack. Stay with my count."
Mira turned to the lower frame. "White Frame, Side Step, Whole Hand. Only bounded signal. What changed when clinic authority opened?" Ari pressed her palm flat again. "White Frame went blue." Nima's lips moved against fear. "Side Step says the cart crossed without wheels." From below, Liora knocked once, twice, then brushed something metal against the grate. Nima listened. "Whole Hand says the clinic key has an older mate." Aven looked down. "What cabinet?" Mira did not answer the noun. "Not yet. First the oxygen."
The mayor's aide pushed forward with a damp certificate sleeve. "The city can requisition the cylinders into public emergency stock." The tablet brightened green, then split the line: public requisition accepted if clinic release inventory remains traceable to protected patient group. All three visible marker beads flickered. The fourth light shrank to a pin. "No group," Mira said. The aide's pen froze. "Then the city cannot track misuse." "Track the cylinder by behavior, not people." Mira picked up the evidence phone without letting the bag touch the cart. "Officer, public-care test. Cylinder outside threshold. No file, group, donor, court authority, Elise mark, or hidden endpoint. It stays with the white plug or it does not release."
Aven's face had gone gray as the tags. "If it stays locked?" "Then the lock is the evidence." For the first time, he did not fight her. He unhooked the fob from his belt and held it out toward the officer instead of the cart. "Witness the key away from my hand." The officer took the fob between two fingers. The cart lock stayed red. Aven backed two steps, palms up. The donor guardian started forward, and Clay stepped sideways, slow and exact, so the man had to either stop or touch him. The donor stopped.
Mira pointed to the mayor. "Say the city request without clinic continuity language." The mayor swallowed. "Public emergency oxygen support requested for visible patient-care load only. Outside threshold. No recipient file. No donor funding. No rank. No court temporary authority. No protected marker, hidden endpoint, or family signal attachment." Nothing happened. Elise's mask clicked once.
Then Liora's metal sound came again from the lower grate, three quick taps and a drag. The gray tags twitched. Aven looked at the cart like a man recognizing a wound he had dressed in the dark. "That is a reserve-cabinet code." "No location," Nima said immediately. "No location," Aven repeated, and the correction mattered. The tablet removed patient group and offered a new field: cabinet witness override. Mira's voice dropped. "No witness override. Public behavior only." Keth lifted Elise's tube loop for the camera. "The line is still tight."
Aven took a breath, then did the hardest useful thing: he handed the brass key ring to the officer too. "Clinic key away from clinic hand." The cart lock changed from red to amber. The public plug ring shuddered yellow, then white. One gray tag on the front cylinder did not turn green. It turned plain white, with no stripe and no patient name. The valve clicked open by itself, a small mechanical mercy stripped of ceremony.
Elise's mask softened. Keth's shoulders dropped half an inch. The tube slackened visibly between his fingers. Above the bed, the crescent narrowed to its pale cut. Beneath the service frame, the fourth hidden light returned white. The officer spoke quickly, afraid to miss it. "Clinic keys held by officer. Donor blocked. Court authority not attached. Public request repeated without patient file, group, donor, rank, or hidden endpoint. Front cylinder tag white. Valve open. Public plug white. Tube slackened. Fourth lower light white."
Mira looked at Aven. "Clinic oxygen strike is not triage. It releases when clinic hands, donor money, court authority, files, groups, marks, and hidden endpoints are out of the line." Aven looked past her to the lower grate, where Liora's hand had vanished except for the edge of a blood-dark sleeve. "The cabinet code came from below." Northstar's phone printed the next prompt in cold black text: lower reserve cabinet source disputed. From the grate, Liora's battered hand came back holding a key so old its tag had no clinic logo at all.
