The Ward Below the Ward
Chapter 064: The Ward Below the Ward
The fourth knock did not come from Liora's hand. It rolled through the lower dark with the soft rattle of a wheel crossing an uneven strip, then answered itself against metal: four slow taps, lower than the cabinet latch. Northstar's phone glowed under Mira's palm. lower care layer requires ward classification. Elise's mask clicked once. The old disk tag in Liora's fingers dulled toward gray, and the candle-roll strip trembled until the cold fourth dot went pale. Mira kept her palm over the screen. "No ward word in the record."
Vale's correction had not settled in his mouth. "If there is a care layer below this ward, the court must know what it is." The wheel sound stopped. Three visible hands flattened in the service gap: White Frame, Side Step, Whole Hand. From farther in, where the camera showed no wall and no route, four deeper knocks came again. Aven's tablet lit without being touched: mobile lower support unit detected. classify patient zone? Keth bent his shoulder between Elise's tube and the gap. "The mask tightens when the tablet asks that." The officer repeated it into the microphone, voice steady, lens kept high.
"Ask for behavior only," Mira said. "Aunt Liora, no room. No count. Only what moves." Liora's key scraped once, then turned until the unseen latch gave its one inch and hit the child-height catch. Behind it, the little wheels moved forward, one creak, one pause, one creak. The old disk tag warmed along the crescent, but the candle-roll strip stayed flat until Ari tapped once. White Frame. The wheel paused. Nima tapped twice. Side Step. The wheel shifted left, then stopped. Whole Hand pressed small fingers to the gap. The third dot warmed. The fourth dot stayed cold.
The donor guardian leaned past Clay with a face arranged for mercy. "A mobile support unit should be staffed. I can send nurses under public supervision." Clay moved his body, not his hands, blocking the sleeve from Aven's screen and the donor from the gap. "Your staff is not a public condition." The fourth light shivered blue. Elise's tube drew tight over Keth's wrist. Mira pointed without looking away from the gap. "Officer, note donor staffing language changed the lower light and patient tube." The donor withdrew one step. The fourth light returned to thin white, but the fourth dot did not warm.
Aven swallowed. "The tablet wants continuity." "It wants a roster," Mira said. "Read what can be seen." He angled the tablet into Mara's camera frame. Oren shifted behind her so the screen, old key, Liora's shaking hand, Elise's mask, and all three protected palms stayed together. Aven said, "Visible behavior: small wheels behind legacy cabinet, child-height catch preventing full opening, old disk tag responding to marker order, candle-roll dots responding to public marker taps, patient mask loosening when classification is withheld." The tablet erased patient zone and printed: support behavior may be witnessed.
Vale took one careful breath. "Bounded lower-side care layer," he said. The wheel moved again. "No location requested. No patient category. No ward inspection." The old catch clicked softer. Liora's voice came up as a thread, broken but fierce. "It moves when they breathe bad." Whole Hand's fingers curled. Nima's hand covered them before they disappeared. "No name," Nima whispered from below. Mira's throat tightened, but she held her voice even. "Aunt Liora, only the thing's behavior." Liora knocked once on the unseen latch. The wheel answered with one turn. Elise inhaled easier, and the fourth light brightened a shade.
Northstar's phone pulsed beneath Mira's palm. She lifted only the edge enough for the camera to see the words without letting the lower gap see the screen: classify lower recipients for emergency allocation. "Allocation is a buyer's word," she said. Aven flinched, because his tablet echoed it in clinic blue. Keth pressed two fingers to Elise's tubing and said, "Her slack goes away when allocation appears." The officer repeated it. The wheel sound retreated three inches. Dust lifted through the gap. Whole Hand's small palm started to shake.
"Bring it back with what does not buy it," Mira said. She turned to the mayor's aide. "Public language. Exact." The aide had lost every bit of ceremony. "Public emergency support for visible care behavior only. No recipient list, no inventory, no donor funding, no court seizure, no ward classification, no location." The wheel stopped retreating. Liora turned the old key again, and the catch held at one inch. The old disk tag flashed white. The candle-roll's fourth dot warmed to the color of weak tea, not enough for proof.
Vale looked at the dot. "What condition is missing?" Northstar's attorney answered too quickly. "A lower endpoint must be identified." The fourth dot went black. Elise's mask knocked against her cheek. Keth caught it with his own thumb before it bruised skin. Clay stepped between the attorney and the bed rail. "You just charged a child for not naming themselves." Mara's camera shook; Oren steadied her wrist with both hands. Mira did not let the anger move her feet. "Strike endpoint. Officer, record: identification demand extinguished fourth candle dot, tightened patient mask, and stopped the wheel."
The officer recorded it. Vale shut his eyes once. When he opened them, he pointed to his own microphone instead of the gap. "The court asks no name. The court asks whether public care can continue without classification." The wheel made a cautious half-turn. Aven read the tablet's next line and almost smiled, not from relief but from the shock of the machine losing ground. "Public care continuation possible by non-identifying support-response chain." He looked at Mira. "It still wants a chain." "Then give it a chain it cannot turn into children."
Mira touched each visible thing with her voice. "Officer microphone. Family camera. Public plug. Elise's mask. Keth's tube slack. Old no-logo key. One-inch catch. White disk tag. Candle-roll dots. Marker hands only. Wheel movement. Fourth support light. No lower faces. No room. No count. No route." As each phrase landed, Mara framed the object and Oren called "seen" under his breath. The tablet line shortened. The phone under Mira's palm cooled. Below, Ari tapped once, Nima twice, Whole Hand flat. Then the deeper fourth knocks answered: one, two, three, four. The fourth dot warmed white.
The little wheel rolled close enough for everyone above to hear cloth brush metal. Nothing came through the gap except air, warmer than the room and smelling faintly of candle wax and old soap. Elise's tube slackened across Keth's wrist. The fourth hidden support light held steady white. Liora made a sound that was not crying because she had no room for it. "It knows," she said. "It knows without names." Aven set both hands away from his tablet. "Bounded lower-side public-care layer verified by support behavior and public witness chain. No ward classification." His screen accepted the phrase.
For three seconds the court was only breath and the small wheel resting below them. Then every light in the rich private wing beyond Cedar Ward snapped on at once, gold and clean, bright enough to cut under the sealed door. Elise flinched from the glare though it did not touch her bed. The fourth support light dimmed by one thin shade. Northstar's phone printed a new line before Mira could cover it: paid wing power restored; lower support remains emergency-only. Vale turned toward the gold spill. Clay did not move from the gap. "They found another lever," he said. Mira looked at the white candle dot before it could fade. "Then we take the lever next."
