Chloe didn’t mean to hear it. She only came back to the office because she’d left her notes on the imaging revisions—notes she needed if she and David were going to keep unraveling Benjamin’s financial lies. Her heels clicked softly down the empty hallway, the hospital long past visiting hours, lights dimmed to a soft, sterile blue. Benjamin’s office door was cracked open. She froze. He never left it open. A faint blinking light pulsed on the desk—his phone, screen lit with a single notification. 1 New Voicemail — Victoria Victoria. Chloe didn’t recognize the name. She recognized the tone. Her stomach tightened, a dark instinct whispering don’t do it even as her hand reached for the phone. Her fingers trembled as she pressed play. A soft exhale, then a woman’s voice, low and warm, poured into the silence like honey laced with poison. “Hey, Ben… I miss you.” Chloe’s pulse stopped. “It’s been two days and I’m still thinking about the way you kissed me in the elevator. You said you’d call after the conference, but you didn’t.” A small laugh. “I know you’re busy. I just… I can’t stop replaying last night. You always know exactly what to do to me.” Chloe’s throat closed. “I’m wearing the dress you like. If you get a break tonight… come over. I’ll wait up.” The voicemail ended with a soft, intimate sigh. Chloe’s fingers slipped, the phone nearly crashing to the floor. For a moment the world went impossibly, brutally quiet. Like her body couldn’t keep up with the reality of what it’d just heard. Then everything rushed back at once. Blood roaring in her ears. Breath shaking. Her pulse an earthquake. Benjamin wasn’t just a liar. Or a manipulator. Or a man who smiled for cameras while destroying her life behind closed doors. He was a cheater. He was touching someone else while calling Chloe “unstable.” Kissing someone in an elevator while telling her she was imagining things. Promising another woman time he never gave his own wife. The betrayal hit her like a blade to the ribs, sharp and intimate. Chloe staggered back, bracing a hand on the desk to stay upright. The room felt too small, too tight, suffocating with Benjamin’s scent and his lies and the ghost of every night she’d cried alone while he claimed he was “working late.” Her vision blurred around the edges. When the door opened behind her, she didn’t need to turn to know who it was. Benjamin’s voice sliced through the air. “What are you doing in here?” Chloe straightened slowly, wiping her face before any weakness could show. She turned to face him with terrifying calm. “I needed my files,” she said. “And your phone was blinking.” His expression barely shifted—but the flicker of panic in his eyes was unmistakable. “Did you listen to something?” he asked, voice tightening. Chloe held his gaze. “It wasn’t exactly hard to hear.” A beat of silence. Benjamin’s jaw clenched. “It’s not what you think—” “No,” she cut in, her voice quiet but lethal. “It’s exactly what I think.” For the first time, she saw him clearly. Not the man she married. Not the man she once loved. The man who broke her. And she felt something new settle beneath her ribs. Not heartbreak. Not grief. Resolve. Benjamin opened his mouth again, but Chloe walked past him, brushing his shoulder as she moved toward the hallway. She didn’t look back. If she had, she might’ve seen the first cracks of fear forming on his face. Because Chloe wasn’t broken anymore. She was done. And soon— Benjamin would be, too.
