The hospital auditorium smelled like bright lights, cheap coffee, and lies. Chloe stood behind the podium, her blazer hiding the IV bruises on her arm, the cameras flashing like tiny electric shocks against her skin. A sea of reporters stared up at her, their expressions hungry—waiting for a headline, a scandal, a downfall. Benjamin stood three feet to her right. Close enough that she could feel the cold radiating off him. Close enough that the press could frame them in the same shot and pretend they were still a united front. “Dr. Harper,” a reporter called out, “can you comment on the recent rumors about your absence from the O’Riley case?” Chloe inhaled slowly. Benjamin had coached her on the drive here, voice low and firm, like she was the problem he needed to contain. Say only what I agreed to. Don’t improvise. Don’t embarrass the hospital. Her hands tightened on the podium. “My absence,” she began, voice steady despite the pulse hammering at her throat, “was due to health complications.” Benjamin nodded approvingly beside her, but Chloe kept talking. “And ongoing internal review.” His head snapped toward her. The cameras erupted. She didn’t look at him. Not once. When the conference ended, his fingers wrapped around her arm, a smile frozen on his face for onlookers. “What the hell was that?” he hissed under his breath. Chloe calmly peeled his hand off. “The truth.” His jaw tightened, but before he could spit out whatever threat he was brewing, David stepped between them. “Dr. Harper,” David said, professional, neutral—but Chloe caught the warning flash in his eyes. “We’re expected at the hotel.” Benjamin’s gaze darted between them, calculating. He hadn’t yet realized he was being hunted. Good. The hotel bar glowed in amber light, jazz humming low under the clink of glasses. Chloe and David sat in a secluded booth, a bottle of untouched whiskey between them. “You handled that well,” David murmured, leaning back. Chloe scoffed. “Benjamin thinks I’m still fragile. It buys us time.” “Use it,” David replied. “Because once he realizes you’re not breaking the way he expected? He’ll come harder.” Chloe didn’t argue. She knew. Minutes later, a man in a pressed navy suit approached their table—the banker David had arranged to meet. “Dr. Harper,” he greeted quietly. “Mr. Park.” David nodded. “We appreciate you coming.” The banker slid into the booth, glancing around warily. “I only have a few minutes. If my involvement is discovered—” “It won’t be,” Chloe said. Her voice held a steadiness she hadn’t felt in weeks. “We’re careful.” He studied her for a moment, perhaps surprised. “Your husband’s transactions weren’t just suspicious,” he said finally. “They were deliberate. Someone funneled money through hospital accounts under your authorization.” Chloe froze. “I never signed—” “I know,” the banker said. “That’s why I agreed to this meeting.” Anger coiled slowly, dark and razor-edged, beneath her ribs. Benjamin hadn’t just used her. He’d built the perfect trap around her name. David reached for his glass, expression flat. “Can you get us documentation?” The banker hesitated… then nodded. “I’ll send what I can tonight.” He stood, adjusted his tie, and left as quickly as he’d come. Chloe blew out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. David watched her, his gaze softer now. “You okay?” “No,” she answered honestly. “But I will be.” Upstairs, the conference room they’d rented smelled faintly of dust and expensive carpet. Chloe shut the door, then strode to the small security panel, overriding the system the way David had taught her. “Audio blockers on,” she said. David arched a brow. “Look at you.” “Trauma comes with skills,” she deadpanned. Together, they pushed the table aside, rolled out blueprints, printouts, USBs, credit statements, camera logs—every piece of Benjamin’s life they could get their hands on. It looked like war. It was war. Chloe stood there, hands braced on the table, feeling something she hadn’t felt in months. Not numbness. Not fear. Determination. “He wanted to use my silence as his shield,” she said quietly. David stepped beside her. “Then let’s make your voice his undoing.” Chloe lifted her gaze. For the first time, she didn’t feel like the woman who tried to disappear in a hospital bathroom. She felt like someone rising from the wreckage with sharpened teeth. Benjamin had no idea what was coming. But he would. Soon.
