📖 Kiss Me Before You Leave, Husband
Burn the Papers
The sound of boots pounding on the floor echoed through the narrow hallway, and the air was thick with the smell of smoke and blood. Ava and Kai had no choice but to run, the weight of the world crashing down around them. The door to their hideout splintered, and the sharp clatter of metal on concrete filled the air.
“They’re here,” Kai muttered, his voice low, dangerous. “We don’t have much time.”
Ava’s heart raced, adrenaline flooding her veins. Every step they took was a step closer to death, but every breath she took was a reminder of the love that had somehow, impossibly, survived it all.
They raced down the alley, weaving through the chaos. Gunshots rang out, ricocheting off the walls like a warning. Kai pushed her forward, a protective hand on her back, but his own body was a shield, taking the brunt of the bullets aimed at them.
“Get down!” Ava screamed as she shoved him into the alleyway’s cover, her hand clutching his, the world blurring around her.
Kai gritted his teeth, blood dripping from the wound in his side, but he didn’t let go of her. His voice was raw, urgent. “Ava, stay with me. Don’t—”
She didn’t hear the rest of his words. She couldn’t. All she could think about was the man beside her—the man who had once pushed her away to protect her, the man who had loved her fiercely, even in silence.
When he stumbled, falling to one knee, Ava exploded into action. She didn’t think, didn’t care about the danger. She wrapped her arms around him, pulling him up, forcing him to his feet. “We’re getting out of here. I’m not losing you, not now.”
His gaze, fevered and filled with something raw, met hers. “Ava, don’t. I can’t let you—”
But she didn’t let him finish. She pressed her lips to his, urgent, demanding, as if the kiss could erase the fear, the pain, the helplessness that had held them both captive for so long. And for the first time in what felt like forever, she kissed him back—not with hesitation, but with everything she had.
They fought their way through the streets, a whirlwind of desperate movement, until they finally reached the safety of a hidden, abandoned house on the city’s outskirts. The door slammed shut behind them, the silence almost deafening as they collapsed inside.
Kai sank to the floor, clutching his side, blood staining the floor beneath him. Ava rushed to his side, her hands shaking as she tried to stem the bleeding. Her own heart felt like it was breaking with every passing second.
But then, he reached for something from his bag—something that had haunted her thoughts for weeks. The divorce papers.
Ava’s eyes locked on them, the weight of everything they had been through pressing on her chest. Kai held them out, his hands trembling. “I thought this was the end for us,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “But I never wanted it to be like this.”
Ava didn’t hesitate. She grabbed the papers from his hands, and in one swift motion, she stood, a fire igniting within her.
“You’re wrong, Kai,” she said, her voice steady, firm. “This was never the end.”
She walked to the fireplace, her heart pounding in her ears. With one last, defiant glance at the man she had almost lost, she set the papers ablaze.
The flames consumed them quickly, curling and flickering like the passion between them. The scent of burning paper filled the room, and for a moment, all that existed was the heat and the promise in their eyes.
“I choose you, Kai,” Ava whispered, her voice raw, her eyes locked on his. “I choose you, no matter what.”
Kai’s chest tightened, his heart racing as he watched her, seeing her for the first time in a way he never had before. She had chosen him. And now, no one and nothing could tear them apart.
He rose to his feet, unsteady, but with a fire in his eyes. “And I will choose you for the rest of my life, Ava. No matter what happens, I’ll keep you safe. I swear it.”
The sound of distant sirens reached their ears, but they didn’t care. The danger was still there, lurking, but it no longer mattered. They had survived the worst. They had fought, loved, and bled together. And now, nothing would keep them apart.
As the flames flickered out in the hearth, the ashes of their past scattered into the dark, leaving only the truth: their love, forged in the darkest of times, had burned brighter than anything that could come against them.
