📖 Kiss Me Before You Leave, Husband
Truth in the Dark
Ava’s breath caught as she pushed open the rusted door to the abandoned warehouse, the faint sound of struggle echoing from within. Her heart pounded in her chest as she hesitated, but curiosity, fear, and an instinct she couldn't ignore drove her forward. The dim light filtered through the cracks in the broken windows, casting long, jagged shadows across the floor.
She froze when she saw him.
Kai.
His back was pressed against the cold wall, blood soaking through his shirt, his face contorted in pain. His hand gripped the handle of a gun, though his grip wavered, and his breathing was shallow.
Ava’s heart stuttered. "Kai!" Her voice broke through the silence, desperate and trembling.
His eyes snapped to hers, wide with shock and something deeper, something darker. For a moment, the world held its breath.
“What are you doing here?” he rasped, his voice rough, strained. His gaze flickered with something unreadable. Fear. Regret. Something far worse than the physical pain he was in.
“I—I should be asking you that!” Ava’s voice trembled as she crossed the room, her hands reaching out to him. “What the hell happened to you? Why didn’t you tell me? Why—why did you leave me to think—” She couldn’t finish the sentence. Her throat closed in on itself.
He sank to his knees, as if gravity had suddenly taken its toll. His head fell back against the wall, the blood from his wound staining the floor. “Ava, I...” His voice cracked, the mask of indifference he had worn for so long crumbling under the weight of his pain.
Ava kneeled beside him, her hands hovering over him, unsure of how to touch him, how to stop the bleeding, how to stop the world from shattering.
“Why didn’t you just tell me the truth?” she whispered, her voice breaking. “Why didn’t you just tell me what was happening? I thought... I thought you didn’t care. I thought you didn’t love me anymore...”
A dark laugh escaped him, bitter and broken. “I never stopped loving you, Ava. But I couldn’t let you get caught in this. I couldn’t let you become a target. I pushed you away because I thought... I thought it would be safer for you.”
Ava’s eyes filled with tears. “Safer?” she whispered, her voice ragged. “You made me think you hated me. You made me think you were the one who didn’t care, when all along it was me you were trying to protect.”
Kai’s hand twitched, reaching for her weakly. “I’m sorry... I didn’t know how to tell you. I’m in deep, Ava. My family... they’re not what you think. I’m caught up in something—something I couldn’t pull myself out of without dragging you down with me. I thought if I pushed you away, you’d stay safe. I thought if I kept my distance, they wouldn’t target you.” His voice was barely a whisper, the words falling between them like the weight of the world.
Ava’s heart cracked open. All the anger, the betrayal, the hurt—it washed away in a flood of understanding. She reached for him, pulling his bloodied body into her arms despite the pain of it. She held him tightly, the tears falling freely now, mixing with the blood on his skin.
“I should have known,” she sobbed into his chest, her arms tight around him. “I should have known you were doing this for me.”
He shook his head weakly, his breath ragged. “I was trying to protect you from all of this. From my world. From... me.”
But the truth, finally spoken between them, was enough to break everything down. She leaned into him, her tears soaking his shirt, her hands trembling as they slid through his hair. “I hate that you kept this from me,” she whispered. “But I still love you. I... I always have.”
He pulled her closer, his arms tight around her, a desperate kind of force, as if holding her could stop the world from crashing down on them. “I’m sorry,” he muttered, his voice breaking. “I never wanted to hurt you. I never wanted to lose you.”
And for the first time, with blood and tears and desperation between them, they finally held each other, truly held each other, with nothing left to hide. In the brokenness of the moment, in the crumbling of everything they had been, they found each other again—raw, vulnerable, and painfully real.
But the danger was still there, lurking in the shadows. Kai’s enemies were closing in, and as much as their love had rekindled in the darkness, it was that same darkness that now threatened to consume them both.
Ava held him tighter, knowing this love, this reunion, might be their last.
