📖 Dark Magic, Hidden Hearts
Midnight Confession
The river lapped quietly beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, silvered by the sliver of moonlight. Emma sat on the cold concrete, knees drawn to her chest, hoodie soaked from the earlier drizzle. The city hummed faintly in the distance, indifferent and vast, but here, in this quiet corner, it felt almost intimate.
Footsteps approached, careful and deliberate.
“Emma?”
She stiffened, breath catching. Liam appeared from the shadows, hands in his pockets, eyes scanning her face like he could see past the walls she’d built.
“I was worried,” he said softly, taking a step closer. “After today… after everything.”
Her pulse thundered. The memory of the auditorium—the shattering light, the shards—still burned in her chest. She wanted to tell him. Needed to tell him. Needed to let someone see all of her, messy and dangerous.
But the thought of hurting him…
“I—Liam, you shouldn’t be here,” she whispered, voice trembling.
He shook his head, a faint smile brushing his lips. “I’m not going anywhere. You don’t have to face it alone.”
Emma’s eyes brimmed with tears she didn’t have time to shed. She wanted to believe him, wanted to lean into the warmth radiating from his presence, wanted to let herself feel something normal, human, for a moment.
“I can’t,” she choked. “You don’t understand… I… I could—”
“You won’t,” Liam interrupted, voice firm but gentle. “Not to me. I don’t care what you’re capable of.”
Her chest heaved. The anger, the fear, the raw, chaotic power inside her—it all pressed against her control, hungry, impatient. Her fingers twitched involuntarily, brushing against his arm, sending an almost imperceptible ripple through the air.
Their eyes locked.
Time slowed.
The ache in her chest grew, a longing she hadn’t dared to name. Liam’s gaze softened, and she felt the pull of something dangerous and irresistible. She leaned toward him, almost—almost letting herself be seen, almost letting herself fall.
His lips hovered near hers. She felt the warmth, the closeness, the unspoken confession in his eyes.
And then fear struck like lightning.
Emma pulled back sharply, staggering away. “No! I—I can’t—”
Liam reached for her hand, but she recoiled, tears spilling freely now. “I… I don’t want to hurt you. I don’t deserve…”
“You do,” he said quietly, stepping closer but not forcing her. “You deserve everything you’re afraid to take.”
She shook her head, unable to meet his eyes. The city whispered around them, the river murmuring secrets she wasn’t ready to hear.
“I’m… I’m not like you think I am,” she whispered, voice breaking. “If you knew… if anyone knew…”
“You’re not alone,” Liam repeated, softer this time, almost a plea. “I’ll stay. I’ll wait. But I won’t let you push me away.”
Emma swallowed hard, heart pounding like a drum. She wanted to believe him, wanted to surrender to the warmth of connection—but the storm inside her, the magic she couldn’t yet control, the fear of what she might do…
She turned abruptly, retreating into the shadows beneath the bridge.
Liam’s hand hovered where hers had been, lingering in the empty space between them.
And Emma ran, heart aching with both longing and guilt, knowing she had just touched the edge of something she might never be able to have—and fearing that giving in could destroy everything she cared about.
