The backstage of the auditorium was dim, cluttered with props and half-broken stage equipment. Students hurried around preparing for the fall performance, voices echoing off the metal scaffolding. Emma tried to stay invisible in the chaos—head down, hands tight around the clipboard a teacher had forced on her. But darkness never stopped predators. “There you are,” Brianna’s voice sliced through the noise. “Our little ghost girl.” Emma froze. She didn’t need to turn to know Brianna was behind her—she could feel the familiar cold prickle along her spine, the one that warned her the storm inside her chest was already waking. Slow footsteps approached. Brianna made sure everyone saw. “You thought you’d get away with embarrassing me in front of Liam?” Brianna’s smile was sweet poison. “Cute.” Several students slowed their tasks to watch. Great. An audience. The perfect stage for humiliation. Emma kept her voice small. “I don’t want trouble.” “Oh, but trouble wants you.” Brianna shoved a stack of costume boxes toward her. The top one toppled, crashing into Emma’s shoulder. Laughter rippled through the backstage crowd. Heat ignited under Emma’s skin. Not magic—anger. Shame. Fear. No, not here. Not now. But Brianna stepped closer, close enough that Emma could see her reflection in the glossy lip gloss smeared on the girl’s smirk. “You know,” Brianna whispered, “everyone thinks you’re weird lately. Jumpy. Like you’re about to explode.” Emma’s breath caught. The air around her tightened. The lights above flickered once—twice— Brianna leaned in, voice a venomous purr. “What are you hiding, freak?” The word hit something raw. Something already cracked. Something that split open. The temperature dropped so sharply that several students shivered. Emma’s vision blurred at the edges as a pulse of magic surged, wild and electric. The metal scaffolding hummed. The light fixtures trembled overhead. No—no, she couldn’t— But the storm was already breaking loose. The bulb directly above Brianna gave a sharp, violent POP. Glass burst outward in a rain of glittering shards— shards that exploded against the stage floor inches from Brianna’s face. She screamed, stumbling back, hands flying to her cheeks. “What the hell?!” Students shrieked. Someone yelled to get a teacher. Someone else swore they saw the light shake before it blew. Emma staggered back, her own heart a frantic snare drum. She hadn’t touched it. Hadn’t even looked at it. And yet— The shattered glass reflected her wide, horrified eyes from a dozen angles. “Emma,” someone whispered, “what did you do?” She didn’t stay to answer. She dropped the clipboard, its clatter drowned by the rising panic in the room, and ran. Pushing past the curtains, past the hallway, past the confused shouts behind her. Air burned her lungs as she sprinted down the empty corridor. Her hands were still trembling. Her veins still humming with leftover power. She was terrified— because she had lost control. But beneath the terror, buried deep and dangerous, was something hotter— a spark of exhilaration. She had frightened Brianna. For once, Brianna had looked at her with something other than cruelty. Emma hated herself for the thrill that twisted inside her. She slammed through the exit door and into the cold afternoon air, gasping as if she could outrun the truth: Her power wasn’t just rising. It was starting to choose moments for her. And the next time it broke loose— someone might not be as lucky as Brianna.
