📖 Sold to the Alpha
Chapter 94: The Duel
The old arena beneath the city had been built before glass towers and electric lights, before packs learned to hide their wars behind shell companies and private security. Its stone seats rose in dark rings around a sand floor stained by generations of alpha blood.
At dawn, it filled again.
Blackwood wolves stood on one side. Viktor's rogues stood on the other. Mara held the written terms in both hands, every word witnessed, every loophole Elena had carved into it sealed with wax and blood.
No marriage. No claim. No transfer of Elena's person.
If Damon won, Viktor would surrender blood, Heartstone, and guidance.
If Viktor won, he would assist the ritual under guard and receive safe passage only after the seed was destroyed.
Viktor had signed because pride could be baited as cleanly as greed.
Elena stood at the edge of the sand with Morwen beside her. The locket lay warm beneath Elena's blouse, cracked but steady. Damon had told her not to interfere. She had told him not to get stabbed. Neither of them had promised well.
Viktor stepped into the arena bare-armed, old scars crossing his chest. Damon entered opposite him, calm in the way storms were calm before they tore roofs away.
The bell rang once.
Viktor attacked first.
He moved fast, faster than Elena expected, a blur of copper hair and brutal precision. Damon slipped the first strike, caught the second on his forearm, and drove his shoulder into Viktor's ribs. The impact cracked through the arena. Viktor skidded back, laughing.
"Good," he said. "I was afraid the rumors were kind."
Damon did not answer. He shifted halfway, claws sliding from his fingers, his eyes burning gold. The double wolf power he carried - his own and the echo Elena had sacrificed into him - rolled over the sand like heat.
Viktor felt it. His smile sharpened to cover the first flash of fear.
They collided again. Fist, claw, elbow, fang. Damon was cleaner, stronger, but Viktor fought like a man who had survived by making every rule bleed. He threw sand into Damon's eyes, hooked a claw beneath a rib, and whispered a word that made black smoke coil around Damon's ankle.
"Dark magic voids the terms," Mara shouted.
Viktor grinned through blood. "Only if it works."
Her hand closed over the locket. She felt the magic in the smoke, felt the way it tried to bind Damon's borrowed wolf power and drag it down. If she blasted it openly, Viktor would claim interference and turn the duel into chaos.
So she did something quieter.
She breathed Damon's name into the locket and fed him not strength, but clarity.
Across the arena, Damon blinked once. The smoke around his ankle loosened. He looked at Elena, just for a heartbeat, and understood.
Viktor lunged with a hidden blade.
Damon twisted, but not far enough. The blade punched into his side, small and black, gone almost as soon as it entered. Elena smelled the poison before she saw the wound.
The arena erupted.
Damon staggered. Viktor pressed hard, driving him toward the wall. "Yield," Viktor hissed. "Let her choose survival."
Damon caught Viktor's wrist.
"She already did."
He broke the wrist with a sound that silenced the arena.
Viktor snarled, shifting fully, but Damon moved inside the change. He slammed Viktor to the sand, knee across his chest, claws at his throat. The black poison crawled up Damon's side in thin veins. His hand shook, but his voice did not.
"Yield."
Viktor's eyes flicked to the watching wolves. Pride warred with survival. Survival won.
"Yield," he spat.
Mara stepped into the sand with silver chains. "By witnessed terms, Viktor of the cleansing line surrenders blood, Heartstone, and guidance."
For one second, Elena thought it was done.
Then Viktor smiled.
His body collapsed into smoke.
The chains hit empty sand. The arena torches guttered black. Viktor's voice rolled from every shadowed arch.
"You won the duel, Blackwood. Come collect your prize before the poison collects you."
The smoke vanished.
Damon swayed.
Elena was running before anyone moved. She reached him as his knees hit the sand, catching his face between her hands. His skin was already too cold.
"Damon."
"Still won," he said, as if that mattered.
"Idiot."
His mouth twitched. Then his eyes rolled back.
Morwen dropped beside them and tore open the wound. The black veins had spread past his ribs. Her face went grim in a way Elena hated.
"The antidote," Elena said.
"Viktor's blood," Morwen answered. "Fresh. The same blood that laid the poison."
Elena looked toward the empty arch where Viktor had vanished. The seed inside her pulsed once, cold and hungry. Damon lay dying under her hands.
Morwen pressed two fingers beneath Damon's jaw and cursed under her breath. "We have hours if he stays still. Less if the poison reaches the second heart."
"Second heart?" Elena asked.
"The wolf-heart. The part of him carrying your sacrificed wolf echo." Morwen's eyes cut to Elena. "If that fails, the antidote may save his body and still leave him hollow."
Elena's throat closed. Damon had carried her lost wolf like a promise. Viktor had not only poisoned him; he had aimed for the gift Elena could never take back.
She bent over Damon. His lashes moved, but he did not wake. "Hold on," she whispered against his temple. "I am not done arguing with you."
Then she stood.
For one breath, fear hollowed her out.
Then rage filled the space.
Mara knelt beside her, eyes bright. "Orders?"
Elena rose with Damon's blood on her palms and the locket burning like a star against her heart.
"Find Viktor," she said. "And bring me something sharp."
