By the next evening, Viktor had turned his demand into theater. He arrived at the penthouse under a truce flag, wearing a dark coat, a family ring, and the calm smile of a man who believed every room became his property once he entered it. Two of his wolves waited by the elevator. Mara kept three Blackwood enforcers behind them with silver loaded and safeties off. Elena stood beside Damon, not behind him. The difference mattered. Viktor noticed and smiled wider. "Elena Vance," he said. "You look better than a woman carrying a dead god's seed should." Damon's growl moved through the floor. Elena lifted a hand before he could step forward. "You asked for a negotiation. Speak." Viktor glanced at Damon. "In front of him?" "Especially in front of him." Viktor removed the ring from his finger and placed it on the glass table. The black stone inside it burned with a dim ember glow. "My bloodline was bred to cleanse oath-spirits. Your healer knows the rite. My blood can draw the taint out of the unborn child and into a prepared vessel." "And the prepared vessel is you?" Elena asked. "For the first stage. After that, the Heartstone finishes the work." Morwen, seated in the corner with the old book open on her lap, leaned forward. "The Heartstone was lost." "Hidden," Viktor corrected. "By my family. I know where." "Then give it to us," Damon said. Viktor's eyes gleamed. "No." Elena had expected that. "Your price is marriage." "Old-law marriage," Viktor said. "Public. Witnessed. Binding enough that no council, pack, or jealous alpha can claim the child without going through me." "The child is not a border treaty," Elena said. "No. The child is power. Everyone in this city knows it except you, apparently." Her phone buzzed in Mara's hand. Mara checked it, and her expression turned lethal. She passed the screen to Elena. Settlement hit at dusk. Three dead. Viktor's wolves identified. Elena looked up. "You attacked a border settlement while asking to save my child?" Viktor did not bother to deny it. "A settlement hiding Crimson Fang deserters." "One of the dead was fifteen." "Then he was old enough to choose better shelter." Damon moved. He did not lunge. He simply took one step, and every wolf in the room remembered why he was alpha. "You are standing in my home because she allowed it. Do not mistake that for safety." Viktor's smile thinned. "I am standing here because you need me." Elena picked up the ring with a folded cloth. "Morwen." The healer pricked Elena's finger with a silver needle, then caught one drop of blood and touched it to the ring. The stone flared white, then blue. Morwen's brows drew together. "The cleansing mark is genuine," Morwen said. "So is the danger." Viktor inclined his head. "I told you." "You told us half," Elena said. She placed the ring back on the table. "The rite does not require marriage. It requires willing blood and a controlled tether. You added the marriage because you want ownership." "I want security." "You want leverage." "Call it what you like." Viktor turned to Damon. "If your alpha wants to prove his claim, let him prove it under old law. A duel at dawn. If he wins, I give blood, Heartstone, and guidance without marriage. If I win, Elena comes under my protection until the birth." Damon's voice was cold. "She is not a prize." "Then let her refuse and watch the seed bloom." Every eye turned to Elena. The old fear tried to rise - the fear of rooms where men discussed her body like property, where contracts were written before she was asked to breathe. She let it come. Then she let it burn. "I set the terms," she said. Viktor's amusement faltered. "No marriage. No hand. No claim. If Damon wins, you give blood and lead us to the Heartstone. If you win, you still do not own me. You get a seat at the ritual table under guard, and you get safe passage after the seed is destroyed." Viktor laughed. "That is not a bargain." "It is the only one you get." "And if I refuse?" Elena opened the locket. The cracked silver warmed in her palm. "Then I use your ring to track your bloodline through every ward you hide behind, and I take what I need while you are chained to Morwen's floor." For the first time, Viktor looked at her without smiling. Damon did smile then, but there was nothing soft in it. "Dawn," he said. "Old arena beneath the city. Bring witnesses." Viktor put the ring back on his finger. "If I beat you, Blackwood, she will still come to me willingly. Desperation makes honest people practical." Elena stepped close enough to smell smoke and cold iron on him. "If you beat Damon, you should run before I decide practicality includes cutting your throat." Viktor's gaze flicked to her mouth, then to the locket, calculating and greedy. "There she is." Damon's palm settled at the small of Elena's back, steady, warm, unmistakably chosen. "Leave." Viktor left. Only after the elevator doors closed did Elena let her shoulders drop. Damon turned her toward him. "You should not have to do this." "I know." "I will win." She looked at the man who had once bought her contract and now stood ready to bleed rather than let anyone else write one around her. "I know that too." His forehead touched hers. Briefly, the war, the seed, and Viktor's poison all fell away. There was only his breath, her pulse, and the dangerous tenderness between them. Then the child fluttered, cold and sharp. Dawn was coming too slowly.
