The ancient texts had spoken of a ritual—a purification that required the blood of a willing alpha, freely given. Elena stared at the words, her heart pounding against the cold corruption that still coiled in her veins. Damon stood beside her, his jaw tight, his eyes burning with a fierce determination she hadn't seen since the night he'd claimed her. "No," she said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "I won't let you do this." Damon stepped closer, his hand cupping her cheek with a gentleness that belied his strength. "It's the only way to save you." "And kill you in the process?" She pulled away, her fingers brushing the locket at her throat—the one he'd given her, the one that now held the key to moderating the transfusion. "The ritual requires a full exchange. Your life for mine. I won't accept that." "You don't have a choice." His voice was low, raw. "The corruption is spreading. You felt it last night—the way it twisted your thoughts, made you reach for that blade against your own wrist." She swallowed, the memory sharp. She had been standing over the sink, the silver glinting, when his hand had closed around hers. "I would never..." "You would. It's not you, Elena. It's the curse. And I will not lose you to it." Silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken fears. Then Kael's voice crackled through the pack link: "Alpha, we have movement. Alistair's forces are regrouping. You have maybe an hour before they reach the perimeter." Damon's eyes never left hers. "We do this now." "Not like this." She grabbed his wrist, feeling the steady pulse beneath his skin. "There has to be another way." "There isn't." He pulled her close, his forehead resting against hers. "But I found something in the texts—a modification. The locket you wear... it can regulate the flow. If we do it slowly, a controlled transfusion, it won't kill me." "You don't know that." "I know I'd rather die trying than watch you fade." Her chest ached. This was the alpha who had bought her, imprisoned her, demanded her trust. And now he was offering his life. "You're insane." "Maybe." A ghost of a smile touched his lips. "But you knew that when you agreed to be mine." She hadn't agreed. She had been sold. But somewhere along the way, the lines had blurred. She pressed her palm to his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart. "If you die, I'll find a way to bring you back just to kill you myself." "Noted." They moved to the center of the ritual chamber, a circular room carved into the mountain's heart. Ancient symbols lined the floor, pulsing with a faint silver light. Damon knelt, and she followed, their knees brushing. "Give me your hand," she said, her voice barely a whisper. He extended his arm, and she took the ceremonial blade—the same one she had almost used on herself. Her hand trembled as she pressed the edge to his skin. "This is going to hurt." "I've endured worse." She made a shallow cut, and blood welled up, dark and rich. She placed her own wrist against the wound, feeling the heat of his life force mingling with hers. The locket at her throat grew warm, and she focused on it, channeling the flow, drawing his blood into her veins while pushing the corruption out. Pain lanced through her, white-hot and blinding. She gasped, but Damon's fingers found hers, squeezing tight. "I'm here." The symbols on the floor flared, and the room seemed to tilt. Elena felt the corruption writhe, fighting against the purification. It clawed at her insides, trying to anchor itself, but Damon's blood burned through it like fire through frost. "Stay with me," she murmured, more to herself than to him. His breathing grew ragged, his face pale. "Keep going." "You're losing too much." "I can take it." But she could see the toll it was taking—the way his eyelids drooped, the slackening of his grip. She pulled back, breaking the contact. "Enough." "No." He grabbed her wrist, forcing it back. "Not until you're clean." "You'll die!" "Then at least I'll die knowing you're safe." Tears blurred her vision. She wanted to argue, to fight, but the corruption was already receding, the cold numbness in her veins replaced by a warmth that spread through her chest. She was almost there. Almost free. But at what cost? She looked at Damon—his face drawn, his lips pale. He was giving everything for her. And in that moment, she realized she couldn't let him. With a surge of will, she activated the locket's full power, reversing the flow. Instead of drawing his blood into her, she pushed her own—now purified—back into him. The symbols flared brighter, and Damon's eyes flew open. "What are you doing?" "Saving you." "Elena, stop—" But she didn't. She poured her strength into him, feeling the bond between them deepen, twist, and then lock into place. A mating bond—not forced by contract, but chosen in the heat of sacrifice. When it was done, she collapsed against him, exhausted but whole. Damon's arms wrapped around her, his breath warm against her hair. "You reckless, stubborn woman." "You started it." He laughed, a low, hoarse sound. "I suppose I did." They lay there, tangled together, until Kael's voice broke through again. "Alpha, they're at the gates." Damon helped her to her feet. "We're not done yet." Together, they faced the door, their hands intertwined. The corruption was gone, but the war was far from over. And as they stepped into the corridor, Alistair's voice echoed through the stone walls, chilling her to the bone: "You may have won this battle, but the war is far from over. Your child will be mine." Elena's fingers flew to her stomach. Child?
