📖 Sold to the Alpha
Chapter 67: The Corruption Spreads
The ancient texts blurred before Elena's eyes, the words swimming like dark fish in murky water. She had been in Alistair's hidden library for hours, the air thick with dust and the metallic tang of old magic. The heart—that cursed thing she'd touched in the vault—still pulsed beneath her skin, a cold rhythm that made her bones ache.
She turned another page, her fingers trembling. The book spoke of a ritual, a purification that required the blood of a true alpha. Not just any alpha—one of pure lineage, one whose power had never been tainted by dark magic. Damon's blood. The words hit her like a physical blow.
"No," she whispered, her voice cracking. "There has to be another way."
But the texts were relentless. Every solution she found came back to sacrifice. A life for a life. The corruption in her veins was ancient, born from the heart of a sorcerer who had fed on pain for centuries. It couldn't be cleansed without a price.
A knock on the library door made her jump. She slammed the book shut, her heart racing.
"Elena?" Kael's voice came through the wood, cautious. "Damon wants to see you. Something's happened."
She stood, her legs unsteady. The corruption whispered in her ear, a seductive voice that promised power if she let it consume her. She shook her head, forcing the thought away.
The pack house was in chaos when she reached the main hall. A young wolf—Elena remembered his name as Thomas—lay on the floor, his arm bent at an unnatural angle. His face was pale, sweat beading on his forehead. Around him, pack members whispered, their eyes darting to Elena with a mix of fear and accusation.
"What happened?" she asked, kneeling beside him.
"He was on patrol," Kael said, his voice tight. "He said he saw something—a shadow moving in the woods. When he went to investigate, something attacked him. He barely made it back."
Elena reached out to touch Thomas's forehead, but as her fingers brushed his skin, a surge of black energy shot from her palm. Thomas screamed, his body convulsing. Elena jerked back, horror flooding through her. The corruption had lashed out without her consent.
"Get away from him!" someone shouted.
"She's cursed!" another voice cried.
Elena stumbled backward, her hands shaking. She looked at her palms, where faint black veins pulsed beneath the skin. The corruption was spreading, and she couldn't control it.
"Everyone out!" Damon's voice cut through the panic like a blade. He strode into the hall, his presence commanding silence. His eyes swept over the scene—Thomas writhing on the floor, the pack drawing away from Elena. Then his gaze landed on her, and something in his expression softened.
"She's not cursed," he said, his voice low but firm. "She's fighting something inside her. And she's not doing it alone."
He crossed to her, ignoring the whispers and the fear. He took her hands in his, his warmth a stark contrast to the cold corruption within her. "Look at me," he said. "You didn't do this. You're not a threat."
"But I am," she whispered, tears burning her eyes. "I hurt him. I couldn't stop it."
"You're learning," he said. "And you won't face this alone."
He turned to the pack, his voice rising with alpha authority. "Listen to me. Elena is under my protection. The corruption inside her is not her fault. If anyone here doubts her, they answer to me."
A murmur ran through the crowd, but no one dared challenge him. Kael stepped forward, his expression conflicted but his stance steady. "Alpha, we need to know what she is dealing with. If it's a threat to the pack..."
"It's my fight," Damon said. "And I'll see it through."
Elena's heart clenched. He was risking everything for her—his pack's trust, his authority, maybe even his life. She pulled her hands away, stepping back. "You shouldn't protect me. Not when I could hurt you."
"Too late," he said, a ghost of a smile on his lips. "I already made that choice."
She wanted to argue, but the corruption stirred again, a cold wave that made her knees buckle. She grabbed the edge of a table, breathing hard. The voice in her head grew louder: *Take it. Take the power. It's the only way to survive.*
"No," she muttered, fighting it.
Damon was at her side in an instant, his hand on her back. "Elena, stay with me."
"I can't do this," she gasped. "The corruption—it's getting worse. I need to find a cure before I lose control completely."
"What kind of cure?" he asked, his eyes searching hers.
She hesitated. She couldn't tell him the truth—that the only cure was his blood. That saving her might kill him.
"I don't know yet," she lied. "But I'll find it."
He studied her for a long moment, and she knew he didn't believe her. But he didn't push. "We'll find it together," he said. "But first, you need to rest. You're burning up."
She let him lead her away from the hall, away from the whispers and the fear. But as they walked, the corruption whispered in her ear, a dark promise that tightened around her heart like a vise.
The answer was in the books. The blood of a true alpha. Damon's blood. And if she took it, she might save herself—but she would lose him forever.
