📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 78: The Typist Field - Consequence
Martha's fear lasted less than a breath, but Olivia saw it.
That was new. All her life, Martha had made fear something other people carried for her. Now it had crossed her face in the thin amber light, and Olivia held still long enough to let the room notice.
"Safe facts," Olivia said. "Typographer credential category. Route source. Source-terminal receipt. No answer content."
The vestibule feed crackled. The witness sounded as if she had pressed a hand over her mouth.
Martha stepped toward the screen. "You are manufacturing drama out of secretarial support. Someone typed for a nervous woman. That is not sinister."
"Then the receipt should help you," Richard said.
Martha looked at him as if he had spoken in a language beneath the family.
The panel processed Olivia's command.
TYPED FIELD CONTENT: CLOSED.
TYPOGRAPHER CREDENTIAL CATEGORY: DELEGATED HOUSEHOLD PROXY PREPARATION.
ROUTE SOURCE: SOUTH SERVICE VESTIBULE TERMINAL VIA HOUSEHOLD PROXY OFFICE.
SOURCE-TERMINAL RECEIPT: AVAILABLE.
The witness made a broken little laugh that became a sob. "I never touched that terminal."
"No one said you did," Martha snapped.
Isabella heard the trap in the correction. Martha was not denying the typing. She was trying to own the definition of help before anyone could call it scripting.
Olivia heard it too.
"Did anyone tell you the typed answer would not carry your name?" Olivia asked.
The witness hesitated. Paper rustled again, then something thudded softly, as if she had dropped the envelope against her knees. "Yes."
Martha's hand struck the chair back. "Stop coaching her."
Alvarez's voice cut in. "The question was asked from the subject side. The witness answered voluntarily."
Ethan looked at the screen, then at Alvarez. He waited.
"Visible behavior only," Alvarez said.
"The receipt is separating who typed from who answered," Ethan said. "If Olivia preserves it, the typed field cannot silently become the witness's origin confirmation."
Martha turned to Olivia. "You are teaching staff that kindness will be punished. Every elderly woman in this house has had someone prepare a statement for her."
Olivia did not flinch at the word elderly. Martha had been using softness as armor for years.
"A statement is prepared after someone makes it," Olivia said. "This was prepared before."
Richard looked down, then back up. "And by the same office that brought the witness here."
The room went quiet around that simple sentence.
Isabella stepped in only as far as the meaning required. "A pre-written answer can make her sound independent after Martha has already scripted her. That is why the house wanted her clock and her words."
The witness whispered, "She said I would not be blamed if I followed the prepared route."
Martha's voice sharpened. "I said you would be protected."
"From what?" Olivia asked.
No one answered.
That silence was the answer the panel did not need permission to preserve.
Olivia lowered her hand over the evidence cloth. "Preserve the source-terminal receipt. Preserve typographer credential category and route source. Separate the typographer route from the witness-origin confirmation. Exclude the typed field from serving as her official origin answer unless a court orders content review."
The panel accepted the first three commands in blue.
SOURCE-TERMINAL RECEIPT PRESERVED.
TYPOGRAPHER ROUTE SEPARATED.
WITNESS-ORIGIN CONFIRMATION: LIVE ANSWER ONLY.
Then amber returned.
TYPED FIELD EXCLUSION: PARTIAL.
HOUSEHOLD PROXY OFFICE CONTEST FLAG DETECTED.
Martha's mouth curved. "There. Even your machine knows this is contested."
"Contested is not erased," Olivia said.
The panel flashed again.
PROXY SEAL REQUIRED TO ASSIGN DELEGATED TYPOGRAPHER ROUTE.
SAFE FACT AVAILABLE: SEAL SOURCE, SEAL TIME, AND AUTHORITY CATEGORY.
The phrase changed the air in the room.
Richard stared at Martha. "There was a seal."
Martha did not answer him. She looked instead at the silver bell on the evidence cloth, at the master fob beside it, and finally at Olivia.
Olivia felt Isabella beside her, steady and silent.
"Do not open the answer," Olivia said. "Show me the seal that tried to make it official."
