📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 77: The Typist Field - Pressure
The amber border made the Blue Room colder.
Olivia did not reach for the screen. She had learned what the house wanted from a frightened hand. Every easy button was a trap with polished edges.
"Safe facts only," she said. "Field label, creation time, source terminal, requester category, and route relationship. No typed answer. No crop. No image. No body content."
Martha recovered first because Martha always treated shock as something servants were supposed to have. "A typed answer field is not a crime. Staff prepare forms. Witnesses get nervous. Someone made the process legible."
The vestibule witness gave a small, involuntary sound over the feed.
Isabella heard it and kept her eyes on Olivia. Not leading. Not rescuing. Just standing near enough to translate if the room tried to swallow the meaning.
The panel accepted Olivia's boundary.
TYPED ORIGIN ANSWER FIELD: CONTENT CLOSED.
FIELD CREATION TIME: BEFORE LIVE WITNESS-ORIGIN ANSWER.
SOURCE TERMINAL: SOUTH SERVICE VESTIBULE.
REQUESTER CATEGORY: HOUSEHOLD PROXY OFFICE PREPARATION ROUTE.
Richard's face changed with each line. Not fast enough to be noble, but finally fast enough to be useful.
"Before," he said.
Martha turned on him. "Do not perform outrage for people who have spent the night humiliating this family."
"Preparing a form is not the same as preparing a witness's answer."
The words landed harder because he had never liked saying anything Martha had not approved.
Olivia inhaled once through her nose. "Does the field creation time match her live answer time?"
The panel paused.
FIELD CREATED PRIOR TO LIVE ANSWER WINDOW.
LIVE ANSWER WINDOW: LATER.
ROUTE ATTEMPT: FIELD AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT ORIGIN CONFIRMATION.
The witness began to cry again, but this time the sound carried anger under the fear. "I did not type it."
Martha moved closer to the table. Alvarez's deputy in the doorway shifted his weight.
"Careful," Martha said, sweet enough to poison sugar. "You were helped because you were scared. Do not let them make kindness look like forgery."
"I did not see the terminal." The witness's voice shook. "I was told not to worry. They said the answer would already be ready if I froze."
Isabella felt the reward move through the room like a lock giving way. Not the whole door. Not yet. But one clean bolt.
She spoke only when Olivia glanced back.
"If the answer was ready before she answered, Martha can turn her fear into paperwork," Isabella said. "The record would look like confirmation, but the house would have written the confirmation first."
Olivia nodded. Her mouth trembled once and hardened. "Then the field does not become her origin answer."
Martha laughed. "You cannot exclude a field you refuse to read."
"I can exclude its timing."
That stopped Martha's smile.
Olivia lifted her hand, palm down, not touching the screen. "Preserve the field creation time as exterior fact. Preserve source terminal. Preserve requester category. Mark the typed field content closed and disputed. Do not attach it to the witness-origin confirmation."
The panel processed. Blue light slid across the first three lines, then broke into amber at the fourth.
EXTERIOR FACTS PRESERVED.
CONTENT CLOSED.
FIELD ATTACHMENT TO ORIGIN CONFIRMATION: HELD.
EXCLUSION REQUIRES SOURCE-SIDE TYPOGRAPHER ROUTE.
Richard looked up sharply. "Typographer?"
Ethan's jaw tightened, but he waited until Alvarez nodded.
"Visible behavior only," Ethan said. "The system is saying it can preserve that a field was typed early, but it cannot fully exclude the field until it knows whether the typist was a vestibule user, a Household Proxy preparer, or a delegated route."
"No," Martha said.
It was too quick. Too naked.
Olivia heard it too.
"Safe yes-or-no," she said. "Was the typist credential local to the South Service Vestibule?"
The panel flickered.
SAFE ROUTE-SOURCE QUESTION AVAILABLE.
ANSWERING WILL GENERATE SOURCE-TERMINAL RECEIPT.
HOUSEHOLD PROXY OFFICE MAY CONTEST RECEIPT WITH TYPOGRAPHER IDENTITY CONFIRMATION.
Martha's hand closed around the back of a chair hard enough to whiten her knuckles.
On the vestibule feed, paper rustled again. The witness whispered, "She told me it would not have my name on it."
Alvarez's voice sharpened through the speaker. "Who told you?"
The panel answered before the witness could.
TYPOGRAPHER IDENTITY CONFIRMATION REQUESTED.
SOURCE-TERMINAL RECEIPT LOCKED PENDING RESPONSE.
Olivia's eyes stayed on Martha, and for the first time that night Martha looked less like a matriarch than a woman standing too close to a machine that remembered her.
