The driver said Household Proxy Office like it was a badge, a prayer, and a threat. His voice came through Alvarez's radio with the smooth confidence of a man who had opened side doors for years and never been asked who gave him the key. "Mrs. Thorne authorized transport. The witness is distressed. I am removing her from the property." "No one removes her," Olivia said. The words left her before Alvarez could answer. Isabella saw the shock of it move through the corridor: Richard's head lifting, Ethan's attention sharpening, Martha's eyes cutting toward her daughter as if Olivia had touched a wire inside the wall. Martha's voice softened into something almost maternal. "Darling, you do not understand the liability. That woman is frightened because strangers are pressuring her." "She is frightened because your driver came for her the moment she consented." On the evidence panel, the pending line blinked. CUSTODY INTERRUPT ACTIVE. EXTERIOR CHAIN PRESERVATION WAITING. Olivia stared at the words until her breathing steadied. "Can the outside of the letter be preserved while the witness stays where she is?" Ethan did not move toward the panel. He kept both hands visible. "Visible fact only: the system is waiting on custody stability, not the letter body." "Plain English," Olivia said. Isabella answered softly. "If the witness can be taken away before her consent attaches, Martha can argue the preservation was forced, confused, or never completed. Keeping her in place protects the envelope chain and the witness." The radio crackled. The guard in the vestibule sounded younger than before. "Detective, driver is presenting a household transport slip." Martha seized the opening. "Exactly. Transportation. Not intimidation. My staff are trained to remove vulnerable people from hostile scenes." Richard gave a short, ugly laugh. "You trained them to remove people at the useful second." Martha turned on him. "You had no objection when those systems protected your name." Richard flinched, but he did not step back. "Then put that on the record too." Olivia reached for the edge of the evidence cloth, not touching the bell, not touching the fob, only grounding herself beside all the objects Martha had used as extensions of her will. "Detective," she said, "tell the vestibule guard the witness remains under preservation hold if she chooses it. The driver can place his transport slip on the floor and step back." Alvarez repeated the instruction into the radio. There was a burst of overlapping sound: the driver's polished protest, the guard's command, the witness's breath turning into a broken sob. Then the guard came back. "Transport slip is down. Driver stepped back two feet. Witness is still inside the vestibule line." The panel changed. WITNESS POSITION STABLE. PRESERVATION HOLD CAN ATTACH TO EXTERIOR CHAIN. Martha's face lost color so quickly Isabella almost missed the small victory inside the terror. The system was not saying the letter was true. It was saying Martha could not make the person carrying it disappear quietly enough. Olivia lifted her chin. "Attach the preservation hold to the exterior chain only. No contents. No body text. No legal argument." Alvarez nodded once to the guard. The witness's voice came through, thin but clearer. "I consent to preserve the outside of the Backup Letter. I do not consent to ride with him." The panel accepted it with a clean chime. EXTERIOR CHAIN PRESERVED. CUSTODY INTERRUPT NOTICE GENERATED. SAFE FACT AVAILABLE: TRANSPORT AUTHORIZATION SOURCE. Martha stepped forward. "No." The word cracked across the corridor, stripped of silk. For one second she was not a grandmother, not a grieving matriarch, not the keeper of family privacy. She was a woman watching a servant's errand turn into evidence. Olivia looked at the safe prompt, then at Isabella. She did not ask permission. Isabella made herself stay still. "Source category only," Olivia said. "Not the slip contents." Ethan's gaze flicked to Alvarez. "That remains exterior custody metadata." Alvarez allowed it. "Source category only." The guard read from the vestibule. "Transport authorization source category: Household Proxy Office. Request tag says subject welfare pickup after failed acknowledgment." Olivia went very quiet. Richard whispered, "Subject. You mean Olivia." "They tried to move the witness under your welfare label," Isabella said. "So if the letter was challenged, the same system would say the witness left because you needed protection." Martha's hand rose, not to the bell this time, but to her throat. Olivia's mouth trembled once. Then it hardened. "Record that the subject is present, objects to the pickup, and does not authorize removal of the witness." The panel flashed as the words were entered. SUBJECT OBJECTION RECORDED. WITNESS REMOVAL BLOCKED. RELATED SAFE OBJECT DETECTED WITH TRANSPORT SLIP: CONSENT SUBSTITUTE PACKET. In the vestibule, the witness began to cry again, not from fear this time, but because she recognized the packet that was supposed to speak for Olivia after Olivia had just spoken for herself.
