"Do not let her open the bag," Martha said. The order hit the radio before Alvarez could answer, sharp enough that even the guard in the south vestibule went silent. Olivia kept her hand near the panel. She did not touch BACKUP LETTER. Not yet. "You threatened her protection," Olivia said. Martha's eyes stayed on the radio. "I warned an employee not to mishandle privileged family material." "She is not in this room," Olivia said. "And you still reached for her throat." Isabella felt the corridor shift around the words. Olivia was not defending herself now. She was defending the woman Martha had brought as a tool and then tried to discard. Alvarez raised the radio. "Vestibule, the witness does not open the envelope. She may describe exterior facts only. If she wants counsel, she gets counsel. If she wants to leave, she remains under preservation hold until I clear custody." Static answered. Then the guard said, "She is crying. She says Mrs. Thorne told her the second envelope was only insurance." Richard flinched. "Insurance against what?" Martha turned on him. "Against confusion." "Against Olivia staying calm," Isabella said. Martha's stare snapped to her. "You are very comfortable speaking for a family you entered under a false name." The old attack should have landed. It did not. Isabella had survived too many names to bleed for that one in front of Martha. Olivia touched the panel. "Exterior only," she said. "Envelope label. Sender category. Recipient category. Visible delivery condition. Custody mark. No letter contents. No body text. No legal argument. No medical statement. No filing attachment." Nora's voice came through Ethan's phone. "Clean. Keep it to exterior descriptors." Ethan gave one small nod, not to Olivia exactly, but to the boundary she had drawn. Martha stepped forward. "If she reads one word from that envelope, she violates my instruction." Olivia did not turn. "Then she can read the outside." The panel pulsed. BACKUP LETTER: SAFE EXTERIOR FACTS AVAILABLE. Alvarez spoke into the radio. "Read exterior facts. Do not break the seal." The guard's voice came back with another voice behind it, thin and terrified. "Envelope is sealed. White. No red proxy band. Front label says Backup Letter. Recipient category says Family Counsel Intake. Sender category says Household Proxy Office." Richard pressed his fingers against his eyes. "Family counsel. Not county." "It was not a filing," Martha said quickly. "It was privileged preparation." Olivia's mouth tightened. "Keep reading." The witness's voice reached the corridor directly this time. "There is a custody mark. It says hold if window succeeds. Deliver if window fails." For a breath, even the machines seemed quiet. Isabella understood it with a cold clarity that made her skin prickle. If the county path worked, the letter stayed hidden. If Olivia blocked it, the backup went to counsel to explain why the trap had failed. Olivia's voice was low. "Plain meaning." Isabella answered because Olivia had asked for meaning, not permission. "They prepared a second story for your refusal." Martha's laugh was almost silent. "A family lawyer receiving a letter is not a crime." "A hidden backup after a failed capacity filing is not care," Richard said. Martha looked at him then, really looked, and the contempt in her face was older than the house. "You do not know what care costs." "I know what my ignorance cost," Richard said. His voice broke on ignorance, but he did not take it back. The panel chimed. DELIVERY CONDITION MATCHES FAILED WINDOW EVENT. SAFE PRESERVATION OPTION: EXTERIOR CHAIN ONLY. Martha's hand closed around the edge of her sleeve. "No." Olivia touched the option. PRESERVATION PENDING WITNESS CONSENT. Alvarez lifted the radio again. "Vestibule, ask the witness whether she consents to preserve the exterior chain of the backup letter." The answer did not come. Instead, the guard said, "Detective, Mrs. Thorne's driver just entered the vestibule. He says he is here to take the witness home." Martha did not smile. She did not have to. Alvarez's voice hardened. "Vestibule, that driver does not cross your line. The witness and the sealed envelope are under preservation hold until I clear custody." The guard answered faster this time. "Copy." Another crackle, then the witness spoke, small but audible. "If he stays away from me, I consent to preserve the outside of the letter." For the first time, Martha looked afraid of someone who had once obeyed her. The panel added one more line. WITNESS CONSENT RECEIVED. CUSTODY INTERRUPT DETECTED: DRIVER CLAIMS HOUSEHOLD PROXY AUTHORIZATION TO REMOVE THE WITNESS.
