"Do not bring that envelope upstairs," Martha said. She did not raise her voice. She did not need to. The order traveled through the radio with the old force of silver bells and closed doors. Alvarez lifted the radio before the guard could answer. "Hold position. The witness stays in the vestibule. The envelope does not enter the corridor until I authorize a chain-of-custody transfer." "There is no chain of custody," Martha said. "There is a frightened woman holding a training copy she should never have touched." Olivia stared at the panel, not at Martha. The signature-field label still glowed there, clean and awful. SUBJECT ACKNOWLEDGES TEMPORARY INABILITY TO ACT. Isabella watched Olivia breathe around it. Not away from it. Around it, as if the words were a hand at her throat and she had decided to learn its grip before breaking the fingers. "Exterior only," Olivia said. Martha turned. Olivia's eyes did not drop. "The envelope. I authorize exterior label and delivery instruction only. No page contents. No signature body. No medical statement. No packet opening." Nora answered before anyone else could. "That boundary is clean." Ethan said nothing. He only angled his phone so Nora's voice stayed in the room. Richard looked at Olivia, then at Martha. "Why would a training copy need a delivery instruction?" "Because staff misunderstand documents when people like her frighten them," Martha said, with a glance at Isabella. Isabella almost smiled. Martha was still choosing enemies by instinct. That meant she was rattled. Alvarez spoke into the radio. "Read only the exterior label and any visible delivery note. Do not open the envelope. Do not photograph contents. State whether the envelope is sealed." Static. Then the guard's voice returned. "Envelope is sealed. Cream stock. Red proxy-office band. Front label reads: Trustee Rehearsal Signature Page. Subject initials O.T. Witness intake required." Olivia's hand closed at her side. Martha said, "Initials prove nothing." "Keep reading," Olivia said. The guard hesitated. "There is a small note clipped to the back. It is visible without opening. It says, If subject refuses first readout, present rehearsal page for live acknowledgment." Richard stepped back as if the floor had shifted. "Live acknowledgment." Martha's face hardened. "That is standard contingency language." "Plain meaning," Olivia said. Everyone looked at her. Her voice had gone very quiet. "You wanted me upset enough to refuse the panel. Then your witness would bring a page for me to acknowledge I could not act." Martha's mouth opened. Olivia cut her off. "And if I would not sign, you would say the refusal proved I was unstable." For one clean second, Martha had no answer. That was the reward. Not a confession. Not yet. But silence, from a woman who had built a dynasty out of never being cornered. Alvarez marked something in her notebook. "Mrs. Thorne, do you deny giving that delivery instruction?" "I deny your authority to interrogate family trust preparation in my home." "That was not the question." The panel chimed. The sound made Martha flinch. EXTERIOR ENVELOPE LABEL MATCH DETECTED. RELATED SAFE PRESERVATION OBJECT AVAILABLE: FILING REHEARSAL QUEUE. Olivia read it once. Isabella saw the next shape of the trap before anyone explained it. A signature page was not the end. It was the rehearsal before a filing. A private practice run for a public document that could make Olivia's own hand appear to surrender her authority. "No," Richard said. The word came out broken. "No filing." Martha recovered her smile. "You are all making assumptions from labels." Nora's voice sharpened through the phone. "Labels are enough to preserve sequence." Alvarez nodded. "Guard, keep the envelope sealed and maintain custody. Do not let the witness leave." The radio crackled, then the guard said, "Detective, the witness says she will give a statement if Miss Thorne promises the filing queue won't make her the only named witness." Olivia looked at Isabella. Isabella did not answer for her. Olivia turned back to the panel. "Show me what can be preserved from the filing queue without opening any filing." The panel went white. SAFE OPTIONS AVAILABLE: QUEUE NAME. SUBMITTER ROLE. SCHEDULED FILING WINDOW. Martha took one step forward. Alvarez moved with her. Then the final line appeared. NEXT WINDOW OPENS IN FOUR MINUTES.
