Olivia read the words twice and still did not touch the panel. REHEARSAL SUBJECT: OLIVIA THORNE CAPACITY TRANSFER. The corridor seemed to narrow around her name. The bell, the badge, the phone, and Martha's failed fob waited on the evidence cloth at Isabella's feet, each object suddenly less like a clue than a step in a staircase Olivia had been pushed down in the dark. Martha recovered first. "That is routine estate planning," she said. "Every family of means prepares for illness. Olivia has been fragile for years." Olivia's face changed at the word fragile. Not softer. Harder. Cold tightened under Isabella's ribs. She knew the old trap inside that word. Fragile meant controllable. Fragile meant spoken for. Fragile meant alive, but legally moved aside. Richard looked at the panel as if it had opened under his shoes. "Capacity transfer to whom?" "Do not perform outrage now," Martha said. "You signed trustee paperwork before you understood half of what it protected." That hit him. Isabella saw it land. So did Olivia. Olivia lifted her hand, then stopped with her finger an inch from the glass. "I am not opening the packet." Nora's voice came from Ethan's phone at once. "Good. Do not open protected contents." "I want the safe header only," Olivia said. Her voice shook on the first word and steadied by the last. "Category. Purpose. Requester. Witness category. Date. Legal role. And whether it was designed to move authority away from me." Martha's eyes flashed. "You are proving my concern." Olivia turned her head. "By asking what you prepared for me to sign?" Alvarez stepped closer to the panel. "Limited header readout is approved. No medical content. No memory playback. No packet body." Ethan kept both hands visible at his sides. "If the system offers role labels, those are visible facts." "Then visible facts only," Olivia said. The panel dimmed, as if deciding whether the house still belonged to Martha. TRUSTEE REHEARSAL PACKET: SEALED. SAFE HEADER READOUT AVAILABLE. Olivia pressed the limited option. For a second, nothing happened. Then five lines appeared in a clean white stack. PACKET CATEGORY: TRUSTEE CAPACITY REHEARSAL. REQUESTER: THORNE HOUSEHOLD PROXY OFFICE. WITNESS CATEGORY: TEMPORARY HOUSEHOLD WITNESS. REHEARSAL PURPOSE: SUBJECT CAPACITY TRANSFER SIGNING SEQUENCE. TARGET LEGAL ROLE: INTERIM FAMILY CAPACITY TRUSTEE. Richard made a low sound. "No." Martha did not look at him. "A rehearsal is not a filing." "It is a practice run," Isabella said, before she could stop herself. "With a witness, badges, a deletion log, and a woman waiting at the service vestibule." Martha's gaze cut to her. "You have no standing to interpret trust procedure." "She does not need standing to read a trap," Olivia said. The words struck the corridor harder than the panel's chime. The radio cracked. "Detective, the vestibule witness can hear raised voices. She says she did not know the packet named Miss Thorne's capacity." Martha moved so fast Alvarez's hand went to her recorder. "Tell that woman," Martha said, each word polished and lethal, "that if she repeats one sentence without counsel, she will answer for every false statement she made in this house." The guard did not answer. Alvarez did. "Mrs. Thorne, that was recorded." "Good," Martha said. "Record that I will not allow a family medical contingency to be turned into a public spectacle by a servant and a dead woman's impostor." Isabella felt Ethan look at her, but he did not step in. He had learned the difference between support and rescue. Olivia took one step toward Martha. "You keep saying medical," she said. "The header does not say doctor. It does not say hospital. It says signing sequence." Nora's breath was audible through the phone. "Olivia, ask whether there is a visible signature field label. Not the contents. Just the label." Martha's mouth tightened. Olivia saw it and understood. "Show the visible signature field label," she said. "No body text." The panel hesitated long enough for the whole corridor to hear the printer cooling beside them. Then one line appeared. VISIBLE SIGNATURE FIELD: SUBJECT ACKNOWLEDGES TEMPORARY INABILITY TO ACT. Richard closed his eyes. His hand went to the trustee seal ring he still wore, then fell away as if it burned him. "I let you build a language for stealing her voice." Olivia did not. Her chin lifted, and the color came back into her face in a hot, furious wash. "That is what capacity transfer means," she said. "You were rehearsing how to make me say I could not act for myself." Martha's expression did not crack. It thinned. "You are overwrought." "No," Olivia said. "I am the subject." The panel chimed again. SAFE HEADER READOUT PAUSED. REMOTE CORRIDOR CONFIRMATION REQUEST ACTIVE. Alvarez's radio burst alive with the guard's voice, sharper now. "Detective, the vestibule witness is holding an envelope. Front label says rehearsal signature page. She says Mrs. Thorne told her to bring it only if Olivia refused the first readout."
