"Then she does not vanish into your version either," Olivia said. The vestibule witness heard it through the feed and began shaking her head before Martha could speak. "No," the woman whispered. "No, if you ask for that, she will say I was never needed." Martha turned toward the screen with a calm so polished it looked rehearsed. "Playback witness is a technical category. It has nothing to do with replacing anyone." Richard did not move. His face still held the white mark Martha had left when she said wife. "Person or device?" Martha's eyes flicked to him. The witness saw it and made a small, broken sound. "She said if I became a problem, the recorded one would make me unnecessary." Richard finally looked away from the panel and at his mother.
