The witness-origin question stayed on the panel long enough to make the room hear it twice. INDEPENDENT ARRIVAL OR HOUSEHOLD PROXY INSTRUCTION? The vestibule witness pressed the back of one hand to her mouth. The radio carried the sound of her trying not to cry, which only made Martha look sharper, colder, more awake. "That is not a fair question," Martha said. "Household staff instruct guests where to stand every day." Olivia did not look away from the screen. "Read the available answers." Alvarez gave a small nod toward the camera. "Safe confirmation only. No crop content. No image description. No memory material." The witness swallowed. "Available answers: independent arrival, Household Proxy instruction, unknown." "Unknown," Martha said at once. Olivia turned her head then. Not to the screen. To Martha. "You do not get to answer for the witness after using her clock." The room went still around that sentence. Martha's face softened in the way it used to soften before cruelty. "Olivia, you are frightening her. If you force that girl to choose words she does not understand, every lawyer in New York will see coercion." Isabella felt the hook of it. Martha was trying to turn Olivia's boundary into pressure, the witness's fear into proof, the same old family trick with kinder lighting. "Then make it plain," Olivia said. "No legal words. Did you arrive because you decided to come here on your own, or because the Household Proxy Office told you to come?" The witness's voice came out small. "Household Proxy instruction." Martha's hand closed on empty air. The panel answered before anyone else could. WITNESS-ORIGIN CONFIRMATION RECEIVED. TEMPORARY HOUSEHOLD WITNESS ARRIVAL: NOT INDEPENDENT CONTROLLING TIME. CROP CONTENT CLOSED. WITNESS CROP ROUTE: TIMING CONFLICT PRESERVED. Richard read the second line as if it had been written on his own skin. "Not a witness, then. A planted clock." "Richard," Martha snapped. "No," he said, and the word sounded strange from him because it did not ask permission. "A witness sees. A planted clock makes someone else's later act look early." The vestibule witness began crying harder. Olivia did not celebrate. She had learned too much in this room to mistake a win for safety. "Can the crop route use her arrival time now?" Ethan looked to Alvarez. "Visible system behavior," Alvarez allowed. "The route is no longer allowed to treat her arrival as neutral time," Ethan said. "But it has not posted a clean route receipt. It is holding the conflict and waiting for another source fact." Martha laughed, soft and poisonous. "Listen to him. Waiting for another source fact. You have turned a family matter into a machine séance." Isabella stepped closer to Olivia, close enough to be felt, not close enough to lead. "It means the house lost the witness's clock and is looking for another one." Olivia nodded once. "Then we preserve the loss." Martha's eyes moved to the vestibule feed. "If you let them write that, you will be the woman who admitted she came under instruction. Not a witness. Not protected. Just useful and disposable." The witness made a broken sound. Alvarez's voice cut through the speaker. "Mrs. Thorne, one more directed threat to that witness and I remove you from this room." Martha smiled at him. "You would love that. Then they can finish manufacturing consent in peace." Olivia's hand shook, but her voice did not. "Preserve witness-origin confirmation as a separate visible fact. Preserve timing conflict. Keep the crop closed. Do not route any crop receipt through her arrival timestamp." The panel processed the command. Blue light moved across the screen, then stopped halfway. PARTIAL ROUTE RECEIPT GENERATED. SUBJECT REFUSAL TIME: PRESERVED. WITNESS ARRIVAL TIME: EXCLUDED AS INDEPENDENT CONTROL. SOURCE-SIDE CROP REQUEST TIME: STILL DISPUTED. Isabella heard the change before she understood it. The room had stopped arguing about whether Olivia was unreasonable. Now the house itself had admitted there was a remaining source it did not want named. "What source fact is still disputed?" Olivia asked. The witness did not answer. Paper rustled on the vestibule feed. Then the panel flashed again, this time with a thin amber border instead of red. RELATED FIELD DETECTED. TYPED ORIGIN ANSWER FIELD. SAFE FACT AVAILABLE: FIELD CREATION TIME AND SOURCE TERMINAL. Martha went white. Richard stared at her. "Typed before she answered?" Olivia lifted her chin, and the next choice opened in front of her like a blade. "Do not open the field," she said. "Tell me who typed her answer before she gave it."
