Chapter 75: The Witness Crop - Pressure

"Whose timing?" Olivia asked again. No one in the room mistook the question for technical curiosity. The last answer had stripped Martha's welfare note off the image route and left it exposed as a story built after Olivia said no. Now the house had offered a crop, and a crop was worse than a caption. A caption could lie around a picture. A crop could decide what the picture was allowed to mean. Martha's composure returned in pieces. First her mouth. Then her shoulders. "If there is a witness crop, then the witness timing is the relevant timing. That is why witnesses exist." Richard looked at her as if he had finally heard the old family language in a foreign accent. "Relevant because you brought her here?" "Relevant because she is present," Martha said. Alvarez did not look away from the panel. "Safe facts only. Exterior label, source category, timing source. No crop content. No image description." The vestibule witness whispered something to herself before reading. "Object label: Witness Crop. Source category: Household Proxy Image Hold. Crop content closed. Exterior route pending." Olivia's fingers flexed once. "Timing source." The witness's breath shook. "Route requests controlling time from temporary household witness arrival timestamp." Martha spread one hand, almost gracious. "There. Neutral." "No," Olivia said. The single word stopped the room faster than a shout. Isabella felt the force of it because it had no decoration. Olivia was no longer arguing whether she looked unstable, whether she sounded reasonable, whether Martha approved of the shape of her fear. She was cutting the lie where it entered the record. Olivia looked toward the camera feed. "When did the witness arrival timestamp post?" The witness read. "Before your refusal status." Martha's hand lowered. "Exactly." "And when was the Witness Crop request created?" Olivia asked. The witness went silent. Alvarez's voice hardened. "Read the safe timing relationship." Paper scraped. The witness sounded smaller when she answered. "After the welfare context note." Richard shut his eyes. "So the crop was requested after the note that was created after Olivia refused, but it wants to wear the witness's earlier arrival time." Ethan glanced at Alvarez and waited. "Visible system behavior only," Alvarez said. "It is trying to borrow an older clock," Ethan said. "The route can make a later crop request look tied to the witness's earlier presence unless the conflict is preserved." Martha turned on him. "You are not a court." "No," Isabella said. "But the trick is plain enough without one. If the crop uses her arrival time, Martha's later edit can pretend it was already part of a neutral witness process." The witness began to cry quietly. Olivia did not soften her question. That was the mercy of it. "Were you told your arrival time mattered?" "Olivia," Martha warned. Olivia did not look at her. "Answer only that. No image. No crop. Just whether your arrival time was part of the instruction." The radio crackled. "She told me to arrive before the refusal fight was named," the witness said. "She said if I was already in the vestibule, no one could say the witness came after." For a second, even the panel seemed to hold its light. Richard's voice was hoarse. "You preassigned the witness, then tried to make her clock cleaner than Olivia's choice." Martha laughed once. "You all sound so proud of yourselves for discovering order. Witnesses arrive before documents. That is normal." "Not when the document is the refusal you were preparing to punish," Olivia said. The panel chimed, sharp and incomplete. TIMING CONFLICT DETECTED. TEMPORARY HOUSEHOLD WITNESS ARRIVAL: EARLIER THAN SUBJECT REFUSAL. CROP REQUEST CREATION: AFTER DISPUTED ANNOTATION. CONTROLLING TIME UNRESOLVED. Olivia read each line. Then she made the choice before anyone could turn it into advice. "Preserve the timing conflict," she said. "Do not let witness arrival become controlling time for the crop route. Keep crop content closed." Martha stepped forward. Alvarez blocked her path with his body, not his hand. "You are erasing the witness now," Martha said. "That is what this is." The witness made a broken sound. "I do not want my time used for that." The panel did not accept Olivia's instruction. It answered with a red border that crawled around the screen like a warning line. WITNESS CROP ROUTE HELD. WITNESS-ORIGIN CONFIRMATION REQUIRED. Olivia lifted her chin toward the camera feed. "What confirmation?" The witness read the last safe line and began to sob for real. "It asks whether I arrived independently or under Household Proxy instruction."
