Alvarez did not raise his voice. That made the command worse. "Everyone step back from the table. Richard, hands where I can see them. Martha, do not touch your phone." Martha looked at him as if the detective had tracked mud across a receiving room. "You cannot freeze a family archive on a preview line." "I can freeze a device displaying an unauthorized estate instruction in a fraud investigation." Alvarez shifted his body between Richard and the tablet. His badge caught the lamplight. "Nora, are you recording?" "Every second," Nora said from the call. "Isabella, do not answer the estate counsel prompt." Isabella kept her arms at her sides. The tablet sat close enough that she could read the new demand without leaning in. Claimant Isabella Rose Voss must appear under Voss name before body-identification supplement can be disputed. The sentence was tidy enough to look neutral. That was how Martha liked a trap: polished, procedural, already asking the victim to provide the missing signature. Richard's face had gone the color of old paper. "I did not seal it." "You are distressed," Martha said softly. "That does not change the fact that the seal is yours." "No," Isabella said. Martha turned. "You have been demanding recognition as Elaine Voss's daughter for hours. Now the official record asks you to appear under that name, and suddenly you refuse?" Olivia's phone lowered another inch. "Don't make that sound reasonable." "It is reasonable," Martha snapped, and the mask cracked cleanly enough for everyone to hear it. She recovered with a breath. "Elaine Voss is dead. If Isabella wants the privileges of that name, she must accept the record of the body attached to it." There it was. Not proof. Surrender. Isabella looked at Alvarez's camera, not Martha. "Record my statement. I will not open or dispute a death supplement through a vault packet sealed under a trustee stamp Richard denies using. I will appear as Isabella Rose Voss before independent counsel, not inside a board preview built by people trying to control my mother's death." Martha's mouth softened into pity. "You cannot have an identity without a death certificate." Ethan's chair scraped once. He stopped before Alvarez had to tell him. Both hands stayed visible, palms down. "The screen has an audit ribbon." Alvarez did not look away from Martha. "Explain." "Top right corner," Ethan said. "Gray triangle beside the seal. It means the seal was applied by proxy workflow, not original trustee device. Richard's initials can appear if someone triggered an emergency template from a trusted room console." Richard stared at the tablet. "Which room?" Ethan swallowed. "The icon is small. I can only tell you what is visible from here." Nora's voice hardened. "Read it aloud only if Alvarez can film the screen without anyone touching it." Alvarez angled his phone over the tablet. The camera light made the glass flare, then settle. Richard read, each word dragged out of him. "Seal event location: Thorne House east sitting room. Console user: Matriarch archive assistant." Leah made a sound by the door. Olivia went still. Martha did not move at all, which was the same as a confession in that room. "East sitting room," Richard said. "That is your room." "It is a public family room," Martha said. "No one uses that console without your key." His voice broke on the last word, not from weakness but from the old habit of loving the person who had trained him to doubt himself. The tablet chimed again. Alvarez cursed under his breath. "Read the notification line." Richard did. "Body identification supplement preview available. Decedent listed: Elaine Rose Voss. Medical examiner tag: ERV-19. Supplemental identifier: left clavicle surgical plate." Isabella felt the room tilt, then lock into a colder shape. "My mother never broke her collarbone." Martha's eyes found hers too fast. Nora spoke first. "Isabella, say that again." "Elaine Voss never had a clavicle plate." Isabella's voice was steady because rage had finally become useful. "She had a scar on her right wrist from a glass cut in college. No left clavicle surgery. No plate." Olivia lifted her phone again, fully this time. "Then whose body is in that packet?" Martha said, "Memory is not evidence." "Neither is a body you mislabeled," Isabella said. The board preview refreshed before anyone could answer. Estate counsel status: Voss-name appearance required within ten minutes. Failure to appear will preserve Thorne House identification as uncontested.
