Chapter 42: The Death Packet

Richard read Pemberton's instruction a second time, slower, as if speed had made it less obscene. "Do not accept claimant hash. Await sealed Voss death packet from Thorne House vault." The study held still around the words. The rain against the dark windows sounded suddenly staged, too soft for a room where a dead woman's name had just been moved like an asset. Olivia's phone stayed lifted in her hand. Ethan's palms remained flat on the table. Isabella did not look at Martha first. She looked at the tablet, because looking at Martha would let anger choose the first sentence. Alvarez stepped closer to Richard's shoulder. "Do not open the packet. Do not message estate counsel. Hold the screen where I can film the instruction." "It is privileged estate material," Martha said. "It is a live private instruction inside a board emergency channel that is attempting to affect witness-package access," Alvarez said. "You can have counsel object in writing. You cannot erase the fact that it appeared." Martha gave him a small, grieving smile, the kind old money used when staff misunderstood the shape of a room. "Detective, a death packet is not sinister. Old families preserve original certificates, funeral-home confirmations, estate photographs, identity affidavits. It protects the dead from opportunists." Olivia's laugh came out once, brittle and ugly. "Like donor videos protect the living?" Martha turned toward her, wounded. "Olivia, this is not about you." "That is what you said when my signature appeared on a file I never signed." Olivia lowered the phone by an inch, not enough to stop recording. "Every time it is not about me, my name ends up doing work for you." Isabella felt the sentence land in the room before she let herself use it. "Then keep it first," she said. "Olivia's donor-file violation remains first in sequence. Pemberton's death-packet instruction comes second. Do not let them bury one theft under another." Nora's voice cut through Ethan's phone. "Agreed. Richard, state whether Thorne House vault access requires your trustee stamp." Richard's face tightened. "For family-death packets tied to estate claims, yes. Emergency trustee stamp or matriarch archive stamp." "There is no matriarch archive authority in the current hold," Nora said. Martha's eyes flicked, so quick Isabella might have missed it if she had not spent two years learning which silences mattered. Ethan spoke without moving his hands. "The viewer permissions show Keene & Sato can request, but not open, sealed archive material unless the source vault releases it. Pemberton is telling them to wait for Thorne House to make the packet available." Alvarez looked at him. "How do you know that?" "Board-channel permission architecture," Ethan said. "I am not accessing anything. Richard's screen shows the viewer tier icon. Blue rim means request-only. Gold rim would mean opened packet." Martha exhaled. "How helpful. Ethan can read icons, Isabella can refuse documents, Olivia can make every wound a performance. Richard, open the vault packet and end this." Richard did not move, and for the first time that night, Martha's softness hardened at the edge. "You raised her as your daughter. If you believe this woman is who she says she is, why would you fear the official record?" Richard looked at Isabella then. The apology was already in his eyes, and Isabella hated that part of herself still knew how to receive it. "Because my house is no longer a neutral source," he said. The words cost him. They cost Martha more. Isabella stepped beside the table, close enough for Alvarez's camera and far enough that no one could accuse her of touching the screen. "Record my statement. I will not authorize a Thorne House vault packet to define Elaine Voss while a Pemberton instruction is live. I will not let my mother's death be filtered through the same route that forged her as a witness." The tablet chimed again. Leah, by the door, flinched before anyone else moved. Richard's hand hovered, then stopped when Alvarez said, "Read only the notification line." Richard swallowed. "Vault seal response received." Martha's face smoothed too fast. Olivia whispered, "From who?" Richard opened the notification preview without entering the packet. A small panel unfolded under Pemberton's instruction. Source: Thorne House Vault. Emergency trustee seal: R. Thorne. Packet label: Elaine Rose Voss - Death Confirmation. Body identification supplement attached. Richard went white. "I did not seal this." Martha said, "Richard." But Nora was faster. "Alvarez, freeze the device. Richard, hands off. Isabella, do not answer anything until independent counsel is on record." The panel refreshed. Estate counsel request pending: Claimant Isabella Rose Voss must appear under Voss name before body-identification supplement can be disputed.
